As we look back over our college experiences, we think of a man who truly fulfills both requirements: be is a true friend and an excellent teacher. He came to High Point College ill its infancy; lie supported it through its trying years; be remains as it enters a new era of increased usefulness. In his friendly smile and admirable character we see embodied the high qualities which symbolize the spirit of High Point College. Cherishing the remembrance of his inspiration to us, we gratefully dedicate the 1952 Zenith to Professor N. P. Yarborough, our teacher and friend. Contents President DR. On these pages appear the faces of classmates who have influenced us during a formative period of our lives. To them we express our heart-felt thanks. Our affection for High Point College will increase immeasurably in the years ahead. In our hearts we cherish the memory of unforgettable friends and events. It is, therefore, with mixed emotions of joy and sadness that Ave leave these halls. Our greatest wish is that we, the class of 1952, in our individual lives will achieve some measure of success and will reflect honor upon our alma mater. Issociate Editor It .ill began last spring when we, as the new Zenith staff, found the 1952 Zenith dropped into our laps. We did not realize the immensity of the task until we jumped into the harness this fall. It has meant scheduling and re-scheduling pictures, begging I ' m- snapshots, drawing hundreds of blocks on the dummy, taking picture after picture, typing endless pages of copy, and doing all the other things that go into the making of an annual. Hut we feel that the sweating, wondering, worrying, and running have been worth the reward — the 1952 ZENITH. At times we felt like giving u|i completely. It was a blow ti have our editor. Hill Penfield. leave school suddenly because of illness, just three weeks before our deadline. The staff had be- come attached to Bill because of his dependability and contagious good humor. At this time of emergency the entire staff redoubled its efforts with the determination to make this Zenith the best — for Bill. (ireg took complete charge of the sports; J alia lived up to her reputation in the artistry of her drawings. With Audrey at the typewriter we were certain that the copy would be just right. Sue spent hours behind closed door working with sorority representatives on their pages. You probable saw Bill 1 1 i pi is anywhere and at any time taking pictures for the Zenith. Feature F.ditor. (ill The Zenith BUSINESS STAFF Garland Wampler Lucille Craveh Business Manager Assistant Business Manager Two members of the staff, Lucille and Bill Hunter, dn not know whether they are members of the business staff or the editorial staff. When Bill Penfield had to leave, they jumped in and did a wonderful job of helping to carry on the work which Bill had hegun. The staff expresses its ap- preciation to those two and to all others who, at the last minute, came in to help save the day for the Zenith. The editorial staff has been encouraged in its struggle by the wonderful success of the busi- ness managers. Garland and Lucille, working with an efficient staff, gathered a record number ot advertisements. The staff sold several hundred dollars more ads than has ever been sold in the history of the Zenith. Our hats go off to them! To Mr. Oliver Smith of Edwards Broughton, to our adviser. Miss Idol, to our photographers, and to everyone who has helped US to meet our deadline, we give our everlasting thanks. The show must go on! The Zenith must go out; And it did. with vour help and co-operation. Seated, left in right: Jin. Sugg, Dixie Henderson. Bill 71 Majorettes 11 MARIE ESSA MARCELENE GARNER PEGGIE PHILLIPS 72 Sports Sports Parade of 1951 and 1952 By Greg Merhige As the curtain rises on the hardwood of the Harrison Gymnasium, we find Coach Bob Davis stressing tip-top conditioning- to his Panthers and Kittens alike. The season, as we go to press, is in its infancy with the team just overflowing with talent. The Panthers face a hard and heavy schedule for the season, against such teams as Union Kentucky, Milligan College, The Citadel, and many others. Facing teams of this caliber, one must have a team in order to step out onto the floor. With boys such as Easy Ed Sueta hooking from the key, Bobby Davidson play-making, Tony Lisk rebounding, Paul Abbie Pryor hustling, and Jesse Joyce capable of hitting the cards for double figures, we ' re sure we have that worthy team. Many times it has been stated that a club is just as good as its reserves, and we can say with pride that we have these reserves right down the line. Coach Davis believes, that if a man ' s good enough for a uniform, he ' s good enough to see action. Too, tiie Loose as a Goose Sonny Flip Thornton will be doing his part in adding to the string victories of the Panthers- Along with Sonny will be Conrad West, who can be counted on to hit the scoring column, easy going Bob Popp, aggressive Billy Hicks, rebounder, Harold Slick Sykes, Ken Baby Frazier, and scrap- per Laughing Boy Gene Yank Royce. Coach Davis, a student of Adolph Rupp, has introduced to the boys the Rupp System of play. Every game the Panthers use this system with great hustle, and they make every play count. The Coach lias stressed that not a step can be wasted; and as we all know, none is. In spite of blisters and sore feet from daily drills, the boys are working hard and improv- ing each day. We feel confident as the season rolls on that we shall have one of the top teams in the conference, if not the number one team. When the curtain falls at the end of the season and the whistle blows, High Point College will add another victory to its records, and we shall once again take off our hats to a great coach and another great team. Bob Davis, the new mentor for this year, came to High Point last season as head line coach for football and assistant basketball coach. Bob, a graduate of the class of 1950 from George- town University, Kentucky, knows how to process the qualities that make a fine coach. We, the students, want you to know, Coach Davis, that we ' re glad to have you with us. 74 Arthur Paschal, Athletic Director Head Coach, Bob Davis 75 Purple Panthers J. V. December 15, 1951 Dear Bill, VJe made it i At last the work on the ZENITH is complete; in a few minutes it will be on its way to the printer. We wish you could have been here to help tie the string around the bundles which envelop sc much hard work. We have missed you constantly in the past three weeks as we came down to the final rush to meet the deadline. So many times we wanted to say, Bill what do you think of this? or Is this all right? But we had to make those decisions ourselves, and we hope that they meet with your approval, that we have put the finishing touches on a yearbook of which you can be truly proud. On this day we realize as never before how much we owe to you; you laid the foundation for all our work; you inspired and spurred us on. Bill, as far as everyone is concerned, you will always be the Editor-in-chief of the 1952 ZENITH. The student body joins with the staff in voicing their appreciation for what you have done and wishing for your con- tinued happiness and complete restoration to health in the coming year. Man-made fibers, new products of the chemist ' s test-tube, have been a major contributor to this textiles progress. A small textile producer in 1923, Burlington Mills believed in the future of rayon — an early man-made fiber. In the past 28 years Burlington has become a leader in the development and production of beauti- ful, durable and high-quality filament, spun and knit synthetic fabrics. From one plant with approxi- mately 200 employees, our Company has grown to include 73 manufacturing plants in 43 communities of eight states and four foreign countries. Em- ploying 34,000 people, Burlington is today the world ' s largest producer of synthetic fabrics, and it is a recognized leader in the designing, development, research, merchandising and fashion fields as well as manufacturing. If you are a young man or woman looking for a place in industry, we think you should consider textiles — and Burlington. It can hold a bright future for the person with the willingness to learn, ability to work, and the natural interest in this fascinating and competitive field. HIGH POINT WEAVING PLANT HIGH POINT, N.
