the 1931 zenith high point college Ruby Workman, editor-in-chief Bob McKenzie, associate editor Ed Auman, business manager Betty Jane Gibbs, associate business manager Miss E. Vera Idol, faculty adviser foreword Here is your Zenith for 1951 ! With sincere appreciation for all the help every- body has given, we, your Zenith Starr, present it to you the students of H.P.C. We have had many and varied experiences. Many times we have felt we were burn- ing ' the candle at both ends, but always there has been a comic relief to make us gay again. To offset the endless grind of classes, examinations, term papers, and parallel readings, there have been dances, parties, athletic events, and care-free hours spent in the book store. In this book are the fruits of our honest endeavor to present all these manifold aspects of life on our campus. Our hope is that you will retain only those memories which bring ' a sense of well-being; a realization of a job well done. It is the sincere desire of the star! that you will rind recaptured in these pages experiences which have been a memorable part of your life during the past year at H.P.C. contents PaT dedication To Dean Allred whose friendliness, cheerfulness, leadership, and character have been ingrained in the progress of High Point College since its beginning, the start dedicates the Zenith of 1951 as a token of sincere appreciation for the time he has given unstintedly, as well as the ideas and inspiration through which he spurred students ever forward to new and greater fields of service. president Dr. Dennis Hargrove Cooke A.B, M.Ed., Ph.D. executive board of trustees Resident Bishop Charlotte Area -Costkn J. Congratulations are due these students, but appreciation is also due for a job well done. They have faithfully and willingly checked and recorded assembly attendance, acted as ushers for all programs and music recitals, and will complete their year of service bv seating commencement participants. Theirs has been im- portant work and they are to be commended for their achievement. 4:; sophomore officers Left to right: Bob Hughes, Treasurer; Bonnie Crawford, Secretary; Gregg Merhige, President; Willie Davis, Student Govt. R epresentative Robert Barrett, Vice-President We arc the sophomores. This year we became aware of our im- portance to High Point College. Now, burning with many unrealized ambitions, we impatiently await next year. For two years we broad- ened our social outlook, and fitted ourselves into our places, but now we are a very definite part of High Point College and are ready to be- come sober upperclassmen, conscientiously taking an active role in aiding the progress of our college. 44 â– i Rynne Allen James W Angle David Wills Auman Edward Bland Austin Dons Eleanor Autrey Mary Emily Badgett Margaret L. Under the able leadership of Edwin Auman and the executive council, much has been done to promote and maintain a true college spirit on the campus. The events of the homecoming weekend were most prominent, but success has been attained in all activities sponsored by the Student Council. This has been due to a unified student body, a cooperative administration, and a hard-working group of believers in the Democracy known as our Student Government. Thompson, Garland Wampler 71 drama Cast of Blithe Spirit Betsy Baker as Angelina Johnson Before MINSTREL SHOW After 72 sports 73 sports parade of 1950 and 1951 When the final whistle blew last fall, it marked the end ot another football season. It also marked the end of an era. Football was finished at High Point, No longer would High Point defend its colors on the gridiron. Some people greeted with indifference and lack of interest, the announcement that the college had decided to drop football from the sports cur- riculum. To many others, students and townspeople alike, if brought forth a storm of protest. True, High Poinr College football in the past few seasons was not the brand one could brag about. The number of wins were a pittance when com- pared to the man) ' defeats suffered. However, football — and even losing football imparts something beneficial to a college. The word is spirit. That spirit was evident if you watched the tans pulling for the Panthers, game after game. Yes, they left the stadium cussing another defeat and on Sun- day morning quarter-backing pointed out a host of coach and player errors. But those fans, those same fans, rose to their feet and cheered the following week, when Loyd or Hotis ran the ball deep into enemy territory. A standard joke is to say of a losing team, Well anyway, their coach built a lot of character. Looking at the Panthet ' s 50 record, it would be easy to theorize in that vein. One victory in eight games can ' t be written off as a successful season. But let ' s look at the situation from another view-point. Last fall a new coach took up the reins with the hope of doing better than his predecessor. C. Q., Tex, Smith and his capable assistant, Bob Davis had their work cut out for them. Coach Smith brought with him the T formation — a de- parture from the accustomed single wing formation with which last year ' s squad was familiar. He was also handi- capped by the lack ot depth in most positions. To off-set this lack of reserves, he sttessed and maintained good physical condition of the squad throughout the season. This helped to keep injuries at a minimum, but those injuries that did occur were costly to the strength of the squad. It was a costly loss when iYlax Morgan hurt his shoulder; also on the injury list was Jl. Ray Burleson and Dave Cheadlc. Looking back over the past season are many highlights, first of all the squad had to hustle and fight. It is easy for a winning club to display these characteristics, but it takes guts and determination to give your best when the scoreboard is hope- lessly against you. Our guys kept plugging all the way even though they were getting their lumps. The other teams were a little too strong for them, they had the teserves that told in the end. Our team was still in the ball game during the first half, but they began to fade in the latter part of the game when the opponent reserve strength wore us down. The Purple and White ended its football career this year with a losing club, but one that will always be respected. Not only did the college end its gridiron career, but so did some of the High Point greats, such as hard battling fullback. Bill Loyd. Once again Bolting Bill took the honor of being picked all-conference for his third straight year. Along with Bill, many other members bow out of the football spot- light; Bill ' s co-captain. Max Morgan, tops in the records as a Panther scrapper who kept the squad on the hustle and instilled the old Panther spirit in the boys. There could have been no better choice of co-captains than Loyd and Morgan. Don Hooper, who was picked on the all-conference second team and regarded among his team mates as one of the hardest players on the club, made his last year his best year. Powerful guards such as L. Ray Burleson and Curt Buttcrball Bovender will also go down in the records with the High Point greats. Scat-backs such as Mobley, Gordon, Hotis, and Smith will be in out memory books for a long time to come. The sight of Ctews ot Gtissom fading back for one of their deadly aerials will be remembered by many High Point tans and not a few of our opponents. Lineman like Yarborough, Fisher, Mixon, Kimball, and Casey brought many a cheer to the throats of Panthet fans. With the close of this our last football season, the Class of 1951 takes its hat off to team and coaches. Wc were proud of our team, win, lose, ot dtaw. Our only regret is that in the near future, we will be unable to avenge some of our defeats. The curtain now rises on the hardwoods of the Harrison Gymnasium to find Coach Smith and Davis once again stressing rip-top conditioning to their Panthers and Kittens alike. As wc go to press the season is in its infancy w ith the team just overflowing with talent. The Panthers face many great schools as the Genetals of Washington and Lee, Western Kentucky, which, by the way, was rated the number one team of the nation in 194N, Lvansvillc, Indiana, and many others. Facing teams ot this caliber one must have a team in otder to step out onto the floor. With boys such as Big Fd Sueta hooking from the key, Gray Cartwright play making, Cool Bob Dtaper rebounding, Bill Waiz and Jesse Joyce both capable of hitting the cards fot double figures, we ' re sure we have that w r orthy team. Many times it has been stated that a club is just as good as its reserves, and we can say with pride that we have these reserves right down the line. Coach Smith follows the famous theory of Clair Bee, that if a man is good enough for a uni- form, he ' s good enough to see action. So the little hustlet and hawk-eye Bob Davidson will be doing his part in adding to the string victoties of the Panthers. Along with Bob there will be Conrad West, who can be counted on to hit the scoting column, easy going Sam Cole, aggressive Tony Lisk, re- bounder, Duncan Redditt, and the ever-hustling Paul Pryor. With the daily drills, blisters, and sore feet, the boys are- working hard and improving each day We feel confident as the season rolls on that we shall have one of the top teams in the conference, if not the number one team. When the curtain falls at the end of the season and the whistle blows, High Point College will add another victory to its records and we shall all once again take off our hats to another gtcat team. 74 Head Coach Tex Smi i h Assistant Coach Hob Davis If It ' s Right High Point Football Season for 1950 Won— 1 ' Lost— H 75 Captain Max Morgan Guard E.
