In early season play, the squad, studded with aggressive and experienced ma- terial, had little trouble in subduing its opponents, giving proof for possible repetition of performance to last year ' s achievement. The varsity squad carried over six veterans of last year ' s squad in Jack Ham- mond, forward; Russell Lombardy, guard: Jack Preston, guard; Darrell Welborn, forward; Vincent Cale. center: and Carl Tipton, guard. Two prewar veterans of varsity competition for High Point College, George Demmy and Richard Ditullio, were back to assist in the cage program. The new additions to the squad include: Bill Sheets, forward; Eddie Giltinan, forward; Frank Henry, guard; Ted Moran, center; and Malcolm Sullivan, a war time All-Conference star here. In the first two conference games, the Panthers had a perfect record. 35 WOMEN ' S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: Tucker, Pickler, McBain. White, Hedgecock, Grove, Stewart, Hines, Kearns, Cutchin, Neely, Lineberger, Young, Angel, Chappell, Gamewell, Isenhour, Williams, Stewart, Buekner, Miss Jo Chapman. Adviser. BOYS INTRAMURAL ACTIVITIES Since returning veterans were not required to enter physical education classes, Coach Franklin attempted to arouse the interest of many of these boys by having a well-rounded intramural program. Tournaments were run off in the various sports and participants who were on either the winning or runner-up teams received beautiful silever and bronze medals, respectively. The physical education department adopted the use of a standard type medal with a raised enamel H as well as a picture of the particular event. Tournaments were held in tag football, duck-pin bowling, volley ball, basketball, ping- pong, horseshoes and tennis. In tag football the N.D.M. Club led by Capt. Fran Bowen, Dick Di Tullio, Doug Case. Geo. Demmy, Russ Lombardy and Lindsay Weaver captured the crown quite easily. Cobles ' All-Stars were runner-up on the merits of Capt. Hebe Coble. Jim Russell, Buck Guyer. Bill Sheets, Garland Hill and Frank Culbreth. Duck-pin bowling at the Arcade alleys in High Point provided plenty of excitement and thrills. Dave Pulliam ' s Boys ' Dorm team seemed to have the knack of getting the strikes and spares and won the title, witli the Epsilon Eta Phi and N.D.M. club closely on their hecN. Pulliam and Callis had high games for the season of 137 and 131, respectively. Other tournaments were not finished at the time this annual went to press. Boys not yet ready for varsity competition were used on the junior varsity squad coached by Coach Franklin, who arranged a very attractive schedule with some of the leading junior college teams in the state and with junior varsity teams of several other schools in the North State conference. Pinkey Hedrick was chosen captain for the year and along with Jack Byerly, Moe Merhige, and Jack Morris played heads-up ball the entire season. Supporting these men were Pop Gunn, Bill Hoyle, Jim Russell, Horace Billing ' s and others who showed vast improvement as the season progressed. The schedule for the year was as follows: Oak Ridge (there) Wingate ( there ) Oak Ridge ( here ) Appalachian J. V. (there) Carolina B (there) Elon J. V.
