Continuing to play a championship game, they dis- played excellent teamwork and great spirit as they downed such powers as Duke University and Davidson. Their loss and tie came after great fighting games by this team which deserves more praise than it has received. Etvin Lewis and Millard Coble coached the shin- busters through the 1940 season in which they won four games, lost one, and tied one. Those showing fine soc- cer talent were Koontz, Lewis, M. Co- ble, Giles, H. Gannon, Zuras, R. Gar- mon, Ferree, Stasulli, Lombardy, Ro- zelle, Lowdermilk, Weatherly, Pappas, Farlow, Gibson, Soschia, Mecum, Van Bylevelt, and S, Coble. [ 95 I

The unheralded Panther reserves, who serve as a feeding machine for the varsity, went virtually unnoticed through a tough campaign; but, never- theless, they compiled a record of twelve wins and seven losses. The Kittens racked up victories over high school teams and strong semi-pro outfits of this section. Coach Jim Mc- Cachren ' s boys triumphed over the high school team.; of Greensboro, Hanes, Sumner, Fair Grove, Mayodan, Thom- asville, Jamestown, Bethany, Cornelius, and Madison. The independent team which fell was the McCrary Night- hawks of Asheboro. Losses were suffered during the year to McCrary Night- hawks, Greensboro High, Wingate Jun- JUNIOR VARSITY HASKETHALL ior College, Trinity High, Adams- Millis, Mirmeola Mills, and Hanes High. Outstanding men for the Kitrens in- cluded Henry Liptak, Marry Spinelli, Hugh Goerncr, and Jim Flanagan, all of whom dressed with the varsity at various times during the year. Jack Burkhead was the fifth man in the com- bination. Other members of the squad were Bowen, Petack, Jarrett, Walker, Pappas, Lowdermilk, Farlow, Sebastin, Auman, and Perry. [94]

N IV I Last year the tennis team, through the fine work of Hinshaw, Frazier, Welborne, Eatle, and Short, easily broke the .500 mark against stiff com- petition. Although this record is not quite as brilliant as some of the other aggregations on the campus, the team always fights hard and gains respect for their great spirit. This spring, with Hinshaw, Frazier, and Short lost, returning lettermen Albert Earle and George Welborne hope to develop a winning from last year ' s outstanding reserves: George Van Guilder, Jerry Counihan, Lump Lombardy, and Henry Minor. This year ' s squad will not have to face the disadvantage of inadequate courts, with which Panther teams in the past have been faced. For this year the addition of new courts has removed this obstacle and paved the way to a brighter and greater season than ever before. 1941 TENNIS TEAM [oTnbjrdy, Counih.in.
