Elon outswam High Point 1 9-0 in a contest which was played under the most unfavorable conditions possible. The field was soggy to begin with, but virtual cloudbursts throughout the game made the condition of the field even worse. Such conditions hampered greatly the most effective weapon of the Panthers, their passing game. The Panthers ran over an outclassed Guil- ford eleven 25-6 on the night of November 8 and next week-end Eastern Carolina Teachers fell 6-0 when Joe Petack plunged over from the five-yard line. The season ended somewhat in the manner of a letdown as Newberry drove over the goal line for 45 points while the Panthers were getting nowhere. Newberry had one of the strongest small college elevens in the South, so this is a partial explanation for the poot showing of the Panthers. [891

BASEBALL The 1940 baseball season wasn ' t any too successful, but it never is anything to rave about, so that isn ' t news. To be exact, the team won five, lost eleven, and tied two games. The heavy hitting of Burke Koontz, Hugh Hampton, and Mickey Cochrane went for naught as spotty pitching and shaky fielding combined to overshadow such slugging. The team fared fairly well against North State Conference competition but several semi-pro teams literally beat the purple socks off the Panthers.
