As a tangible expression of self-govern- ment by students, this group has fulfilled its duties to the satisfaction of the administration and of the student body that it represents. Led by C. A. Watts as prendent and Jerome Couni- han as Vice-President, it is composed of two representatives from each of the four classes and of the presidents of the dormitory and day student councils. Its primary aim is to insure a cooperative relationship between students and faculty and to promote better undersanding and fellowship among all students. Thus, the en- forcement or student regulations and the marked development of social life have distin- guished another of the Council ' s successful Echool years. C A. Here they live as a family unit, applying all the principles, which they have studied during their previous years, to practical use. Child care, cooking, home budgeting, and home management in general are the important items taught, thereby meeting the require- ments of the National Vocational Educational Department in the Home Economics program. This year, 1940-41, the Home Economics majors are fortunate in having as their new supervisor, Miss Ada B. Johnson, who will direct the girls in their management of the cottage. Being situated near the campus, the new practice house is ideally located at 909 West College Drive. In keeping with the forward progress of High Point College, many improvements have been made to facilitate the students ' work and to bring the practice house up to modern standards of home making; in this way adding new intetest to this phase of work. 1 [7 ] Dl 176] Helen Crowder President Jack Lee Vke-Prmitni Betty Sechrest Secretary REPRESENTATIVES Theta Pi Miss Louise Adams Helen Crowder Alpha Tfteta Psi Mrs. Alice Paige White Lucv Neal Thayer Sigma Alpha Phi Miss V ' erel Ward Bet iv Sechrest Eptilon Eta Phi Prof. J. This year it has placed special emphasis upon the promnrinu of better relationships among these clubs ami a clarification of the rules under which they itiilit operate. Paul Owen, the permanent chairman from the faculty, has led the group in their most successful and useful of years. The supervision of ticket sales, the care of equipment, and the arrange- ment of trips for the varsities are but a few of its varied tasks. They are responsible for the spirit of our teams as opposed to that fit the other colleges in the conference. However, the promotion of intercollegiate sports is but one phase of their work. Less noticeable but far more important is their task of extending the athletic program to every student by means of the physical education classes and the intramural sports pro- gram. Recognizing the need for emphasis upon health education, they insist upon every physically fit student ' s participation in some phase of this program. Composed of coaches. The Panthers emerged from a tough ten-game schedule with five wins, four losses, and one scoreless tie. A fine spirit prevailed on the squad through- out the year and this spirit, coupled with that of the student body, was in no small measure responsible for the vast improvement in the team ' s play. The season opened with a scoreless tie against a heavier Wofford team. Lenoir Rhyne capitalized on two breaks to defeat the Pan- thers in the second game on the schedule, 12-0. The Yowmen trekked to Norfolk next week-end and showing a burst of power and speed humbled the Norfolk William and Mary aggregation 33-0. The season ' s North State Conference cham- pions, the Catawba Indians, exhibited the slickest passing attack the Panthers faced all season and turned back the locals 24-0. The squad then upset a favored Emory and Henry eleven 7-0. In probably their best of- fensive game during the year, the Panthers defeated Western Carolina Teachers College 188} n MARCEL MAIFREGEOT Mttftagtt JOHNSON MO RAN I l-l ' Kl ' W SKI TARVER MAXWELL WATTS PETAOC ZURAS SEASON SIICE 1928 27-12, on the strength of two 70-yard runs by Arthur Griswald; a 90-yard run by Jack Moran after he had snagged a pass; and a line lunge by Joe Petack. Elon outswam High Point 1 9-0 in a contest which was played under the most unfavorable conditions possible. The field was soggy to begin with, but virtual cloudbursts throughout the game made the condition of the field even worse. Such conditions hampered greatly the most effective weapon of the Panthers, their passing game. The Panthers ran over an outclassed Guil- ford eleven 25-6 on the night of November 8 and next week-end Eastern Carolina Teachers fell 6-0 when Joe Petack plunged over from the five-yard line. The season ended somewhat in the manner of a letdown as Newberry drove over the goal line for 45 points while the Panthers were getting nowhere. Newberry had one of the strongest small college elevens in the South, so this is a partial explanation for the poot showing of the Panthers. To be exact, the team won five, lost eleven, and tied two games. The heavy hitting of Burke Koontz, Hugh Hampton, and Mickey Cochrane went for naught as spotty pitching and shaky fielding combined to overshadow such slugging. The team fared fairly well against North State Conference competition but several semi-pro teams literally beat the purple socks off the Panthers. The two tie games were played with the pro- fessional club of Thomasville and Eastern Carolina Teachers College. SEASON RECORD High Point • • ■2; Catawba - - ■1 High Point ... Even with the loss of Hilliard Nance dur- ing the Christmas holidays, and even with the illness of key men in the closing games of the campaign, Coach Virgil Yow ' s club maintained a record of 17 wins and 8 defeats during the tough schedule. In four pre-Christmas games the Panthers held a .500 mark, and then after Christmas visited Virginia, there to lose three of the four games played. But upon their return the team began functioning in a manner which netted them wins over Catawba, W. C. T. G, Langley Field, Atlantic Christian, and Guilford. On January 25 the team struck a snag against McCrary but then in succeeding games turned back Appalachian, Lenoir- Rhyne, and Elon. Then came a turning point in the season. With High Point minus Jack Moran and Bill Keene, Elon triumphed at Elon, 37-35; three nights later Appalachian raced in with a 42-39 win at Boone. Two nights before the Conference Tourna- ment the Panthers played spotty ball in de- feating Lenoir-Rhyne at Hickory 43-37 but in the first game of the tournament the team played like professionals in whipping Atlan- tic Christian 60-31. Spirit was at a high pitch when the Panthers collided with a hot Catawba team in the semi-finals. Then doom came. It is all history now, how the Indians, playing faultlessly, out-classed a careless Pan- ther outfit, 35-29. Hanes was beaten 44-43 in a season-ender which has as its only interest the fact that Jack Moran ended his four-year career as a Panther eager gloriously by buck- eting four points in the final seconds of the game. The team was the best-balanced one in recent years, with no one being consistently outstanding all season. George Zuras hit a scoring streak in mid-season and piled up enough points to lead the club in scoring. Captain Jack Moran, Jerry Counihan, Bill Keene, and Marcel Malfregeot must be men- tioned if outstanding men are named. George Demrny, Milliard Red Coble, Emmett Hartnetr, Billy Patterson, Frank Murray, and Russ Lombardy played valuable roles as re- serves while Freshmen Henry Liptak and John Stasulli showed promise of aiding the squad a great deal next year. [93] The unheralded Panther reserves, who serve as a feeding machine for the varsity, went virtually unnoticed through a tough campaign; but, never- theless, they compiled a record of twelve wins and seven losses. The Kittens racked up victories over high school teams and strong semi-pro outfits of this section. Coach Jim Mc- Cachren ' s boys triumphed over the high school team.; of Greensboro, Hanes, Sumner, Fair Grove, Mayodan, Thom- asville, Jamestown, Bethany, Cornelius, and Madison. The independent team which fell was the McCrary Night- hawks of Asheboro. Losses were suffered during the year to McCrary Night- hawks, Greensboro High, Wingate Jun- JUNIOR VARSITY HASKETHALL ior College, Trinity High, Adams- Millis, Mirmeola Mills, and Hanes High. Outstanding men for the Kitrens in- cluded Henry Liptak, Marry Spinelli, Hugh Goerncr, and Jim Flanagan, all of whom dressed with the varsity at various times during the year. Jack Burkhead was the fifth man in the com- bination. Other members of the squad were Bowen, Petack, Jarrett, Walker, Pappas, Lowdermilk, Farlow, Sebastin, Auman, and Perry. [94] SOCCER 19411 RESULTS High Point 1 University of Maryland 2 High Point 2 Davidson High Point . 1 Duke High Point 8 Davidson . . 2 High Point 1 Frostburg .... 1 High Point 2 Duke 1 The mythical title of state soccer champions was again earned by the Pur- ple Panther squad after another bril- liantly successful season. Continuing to play a championship game, they dis- played excellent teamwork and great spirit as they downed such powers as Duke University and Davidson. Their loss and tie came after great fighting games by this team which deserves more praise than it has received. Etvin Lewis and Millard Coble coached the shin- busters through the 1940 season in which they won four games, lost one, and tied one. Those showing fine soc- cer talent were Koontz, Lewis, M. Co- ble, Giles, H. Gannon, Zuras, R. Gar- mon, Ferree, Stasulli, Lombardy, Ro- zelle, Lowdermilk, Weatherly, Pappas, Farlow, Gibson, Soschia, Mecum, Van Bylevelt, and S, Coble. [ 95 I N IV I Last year the tennis team, through the fine work of Hinshaw, Frazier, Welborne, Eatle, and Short, easily broke the .500 mark against stiff com- petition. Although this record is not quite as brilliant as some of the other aggregations on the campus, the team always fights hard and gains respect for their great spirit. This spring, with Hinshaw, Frazier, and Short lost, returning lettermen Albert Earle and George Welborne hope to develop a winning from last year ' s outstanding reserves: George Van Guilder, Jerry Counihan, Lump Lombardy, and Henry Minor. This year ' s squad will not have to face the disadvantage of inadequate courts, with which Panther teams in the past have been faced. For this year the addition of new courts has removed this obstacle and paved the way to a brighter and greater season than ever before. 1941 TENNIS TEAM [oTnbjrdy, Counih.in.
