Miitemeneme of this book is footprints. Footsteps are an essential part ofa Duet omadyeas they carry her about her duties. It is only by footsteps that FOotprimnts are made. We are grateful for those who guided our footsteps each day in order that we faenemacnieve our goal. Three years out of the lives of twenty-three girls have been spent working and playing together. The purpose of the work was to mold young lives into mature, capable nurses while the play relieved some of the tension and tiredness of eight hours of duty. This book tells of our life, Our associates, and our friends. It tells of the places we have been, the ex- periences that we have had, and of all we have strived to be. It is with pride that we present the LIGHTED LAMP of 1959. IN MEMORIAM DRVeRU Weer taped Dr. J. W. Slate, the father of Dr. J. E. Slate and Dr. M. L. Slate passed away on September 12, 1958, after serving on our hospital staff for many years. His health limited his practice but he continued to work at his office until the time of his death. His practice stretched over fifty-seven years of service to the sick. An old phrase gone but not forgotten'' best describes mutual feelings toward his memory. YOur, consideration for us as students, your helpftulmessmimteaening us on the w ards and in the classroom, and your kindness will always be re- membered by us. We could never begin to tell you how much we appreciated your thoughtfulness while we were in training. You will always stand out in our hearts and minds as the person who took time out of his busy day to re- member student nurses. And now, Dr. Leath, may this somehow make up for all we have not said or couldn't say. Here we were entering into an entirely different life for most of us; dormitory life. A knowledge of now being on our own and away from home for the first time made us unsure of ourselves. We were greeted at the dormitory by the upperclassmen, Miss Frances Burgess, our Director of Nursing, and Miss Lucille Weatherman, then our Educational Director. That evening a welcoming party was given for us by the upperclassmen. It put us at ease and gave us a chance to get acquainted with some of the girls who were to be our companions for our first two years of training. The following day was that of orientation to our classes and the hospital. This day was to be long remembered as one of confusion, wonderment, and exhaustion. We all welcomed the sight of our dormitory rooms at the end of the day. March 15, 1957, our footprints led to our first big achievement, our capping exercise. This left us with more confidence and a feeling that now we really belonged. We had now completed six months of our classes and working in the hospital which brought us one step nearer to our goal. Before we knew it we were Juniors. Now our caps had a black stripe on the left side. This phase of our training was composed of our specialties; the operating room, obstetrics, and the diet kitchen. We were having more nurse-patient experience and having opportunities of applying the knowledge which we had strived for our freshman year. Most of our classes were presented by the doctors on the staff. When we were just about to collapse under the strain of general routine ---our long awaited vacation came and another goal was achieved. April, 1958, we were very proud and privileged to help in moving from the original Burrus Hospital to our new and modern High Point Memorial Hospital. Our unforgettable affiliations to Friend's Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the North Carolina State Hospital for the Mentally Ill, and to Children's Hospital in Washington D.C. were taken in the later part of our junior year and the whole of our senior year. These affiliations were educational, enjoyable and crowded with the unexpected. September 10, 1958, we entered our last year of training. We now had earned a black band all the way across our nursing cap and the title--Senior. Our responsibilities had increased. We were now in charge of the various places more often. With graduation around the corner we were allexcited about getting our annual ready, selecting our graduation uniform and thinking of state board examination. Familiar footprints slowly fade in the past as our hopes for new footprints of twenty-three registered nurses will appear for us. These three years have been a very important step into the future. In our minds and hearts we will always hold the memories of certain experiences in our nursing profession. We shall alwaysremember the ones who have made it possible for us to obtain our goal here at High Point Memorial Hospital.
