Our life at High Point Memorial Hospital began on August 28, 1955. We were met in the lobby of our new home that Sunday afternoon by Miss Frances Burgess, who was to be our Director of Nurses, and Miss Lucille Weatherman, our Nursing Arts Instructor, who later became our Educational Director. We were a scared group of girls as we were shown to our rooms that afternoon. The rooms were very modern and nice that day, but almost every thought was turned to home. We were introduced to our roommates and it helped a little to know that someone else was just as lonely as you. Bright and early, the next morning at about eight o'clock, we were found in the cafeteria of the hospital eating our first hospital breakfast. Then off to our first all day classes, then study half the night with the lights dimmed so they could be seen by the housemother. On March 10, 1956, we reached our first goal which - - we thought - - would make us full pledged nurses. Just how wrong could we be? Somehow, we made it thru our freshmen year. We then embarked upon ow junior year, with a lighted class schedule and a heavier work schedule, we began to see a little more of what nurs- ing was really like. During this year we received our training in the special services - - including diet kitchen, operating room, and obstetrics. By now most of us were working those much talked about shifts - - 3-11 and 11-7. These were really new experiences for us, the first night we worked 11-7 in the old building, we were not only scared because of not working alone before, but those dark halls were enough to scare a veteran. The nicest thing about the junior year was that nice, long, three week vacation, Following this, we commenced our much looked forward to - - senior year. Some of us left for one of the affiliations even before becoming seniors. These places - - we had heard so much about from the upperclassmen we thought we knew what to expect but, alas, again we were wrong. We were as surprised and lost as everyone else hadbeen. The last half of our senior year changed several of our classmates from Miss to Mrs. With these changes came still other - - only four seniors were living on our beloved senior hall during the months of May and June. Two of the seniors will not soon forget those two months. With graduation drawing near, and an annual to get out, these months were busy ones for us. As the curtain is closing on the last act of our lives as student nurses, we steal a backward glance and know that these have truly been some of the best years of our lives. We know that we shall long remember and cherish all the friends and memories we have made in these three years. The Navy is-never going to make lieutenants of these girls“as planned. King changed her name to Ingram, and all the time we thought it would be Joyce. Atkinson now studies blue-prints from the Hufford Home Builders when she's off duty. Parsons went back to Washington and sees lots of night life in that exciting city with Phil. Peggy Steinmann thinks that Philadelphia is just wonderfulvas long as Leon is-somewhere near their Logan Home, We now-see Patsy Tate and Larry joining Is-and Phil on the rounds of the fabulous Washington night spots. Jo Currin.is forever taking doc- tor's orders, but now they are mostly from Fred,.so she doesn't mind at all.“ Linda’Grubb, Mary Ann Mitchell, and Lou Ann Frye all have nice homes how in the High Point suburbs and visit each other often. Susie Léonard Walker says the long wait for Glenn was well worth the effort. Wouldn't you know it, this city finally gets one handsome ba- ¢helor doctor, and guess who his office nurses? Why, Betty Phelps, who’else? Doris Roney left High Point like a homing pigeon after Graduation, back to Alaman¢ge County and Wayne. Joan Thompson has “all fringed rugs and Ken has no shoe laces, compliments of the darling little puppy who runs around the house. Shirley Yorkygave up nursing for the quiet comforts of a suburban Washington home with Lloyd. ' Becky Brown, who is now Mrs. Cook, honeymooning at the Fontain- bleau Hotel in Miami Beach, has the adjacent suite to Ann Southerland Clapp and Herb. Pure coincidence. Guess who is now sewing tiny, things - pink or blue, Bonnie Cook? That lucky Peggy Frye, out on the UCLA campus... too bad she's dalxeady, married, Mackie settled down for a quiet home life with Bill and is working at Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Miller is keeping that lovely Clinard home and all the little Clinards. Wanda Willard still has her long list of boy friends ‘and has decided that the only answer for hers polygamy. Gee, it's nice to go to sleep with such beautiful visions. of our gradu- ating class before us and dream about the rosy daydreams we have been having while writing this prophecy. CLASS PROPHETS Kathleen King and Jo Currin Page Eighty-Five THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE CLASS OF 1958 In this age of the atom and jet We write this record lest we forget, The three long years which have meant so: much Brought work, friends and lots of luck. Our last will and testament we now compose, The part of sound minds, you'll have to suppose. Perhaps to you our bequest may seem worthless, But to us such things are coveted and priceless. Our uniforms are worn, our caps still stand high, But we have weathered the storms with many a sigh. To Philly and Washington, and home again, Brother what a time it's been. It's time to go and it's getting late For us, the class of 1958. ARTICLE I - To High Point Memorial Hospital we leave our loyalty, and take treasured.memories.accumu- lated throughout our three years as students.
