Never thinking about what was in store for us, we carried our baggage to issued quarters whichwas then located on Ho- well Street. We were met at the door by two stewardesses: Miss Shupp, our instructor; and Mrs. Blair, our house- mother. Uncertain smiles soon became our friends and before the night had be- gun, we were the loudest crowd ever. The next six months included books, studying, andclasses. These books were heavy inmore ways than one. You really had to be on your toes when 'Oscar' , our skeleton, appeared before us. March 17th finally rolled around and we received our caps. After that, the time passed fast and before we rea- lized it, we were called second mates or half stripes. More responsibility had been put on our weak shoulders as Juniors but we were proud to bear it. Some could not endure the load and fell along the way while the rest trodded on. Activities! No holiday was missed without a party or dance to fill the night. Skating, tennis, and we must not forget the City Lake, filled our time off duty. While some were in Obstetrics, Sur- gery, the diet kitchen, or scattered throughout our ship, four brave souls departed from the deck for three months, our first affiliation - Friends Hospital ine!
