After dumping our bags, we got acquainted, ate supper, and set out for town, having to be back at the nurses home byrl0 o'clock) pim: On Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock eighteen new alarm clocks summoned us from slumber to begin our new exploration of the nurs- ing profession. Classes began on this morning. Ina few days, one of our girls left us leaving seventeen to carry on. Oh, those first six months of classes, page after page of note taking, learning new procedures, practice on the halls, and of course, exams, how im- portant we realize now that they were. The next big event, occurring on March 4, 1949 found a group of sixteen proud possessors of a cap, which meant we had success- fully completed the probationary period. A few months after this, two of our girls decided to exchange nursing for a housekeeping career. This left fourteen completing the first year. At the beginning of the second year, we welcomed a former stu- dent, returning to complete her training. Now we were fifteen in number, This year proved to be our most difficult one as added responsibilities and harder classes came our way. September 6, 1950 was another important day, for upon this date we became seniors, giving us the right to wear a black band on our caps. This year found each of us spending three months in Washing- ton, D. C. on Pediatric affiliation. Now as our training period draws to an endwe are looking forward with much anticipation to graduation, white uniforms, and last but not least, state board and a future in the nursing profession. Ethel Mae Hill Historian 32 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY OF GUILFORD CITY OF HIGH POINT HIGH POINT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ARTICLE I We, the senior class of 1951, being of sound body (supposedly), dohere-by make and publish our last will and testament, We leave to the school our appreciation for their help and guidance during our period of training. We would like to leave to the uprising seniors our twelve o'clock leave, our black bands, the coke machine (with all its headaches), and our Burrus Home privileges, To the freshmen, we leave our bright ideas, our disappointments, and our ability to always do the right thing at the wrong time. ARTICLE II We would also like to leave the following person- al possessions: I, Ivy Lee Baugham, leave my policeman to Ollie Davenport (look him up while in D, C,) I, Peggy Lee Booker, leave my wit and humor to Shirley Meadows, I, Billie Lee Carr, leave my cute technique in the emergency room to Joyce Burrows, I, Helen Stewart, leave my quiet and graceful manner to Maxine Willard, I, Adele Caudle, leave my ability to have a 33 good time, any place, and time, and under any circumstance to the freshman class, I, Susie White, leave my love problems to Hel- en Reid, I, Sally Osborne, leave my ability to keep my male patients calling after they go home to Johnsie Bridgers, I, Kathleen Holt, leave my nightmares to Paul- ine Absher (feed them good), I, Ethel Mae Hill, leave my ability to love one man to Betty Jo Lovette. I, Jacqueline Jarvis, leave my chuckle to June Bivens, I, Ann Beck, leave my Gypsy Rose Lee act to Mary Alice Edwards, I, Martha Ann Coble, leave my chauffer lic- ense to Pearl Haley, I, Marie Hancock, leave my ever-ready re- marks to Charlcie Bonkemeyer. We, Marietta Boone and Lunary Love, leave our positions as chief cook and bottle washer at the Burrus Home to Peggy Rose Stevens and anybody she can get to help her, Signed and Sealed, Lunary Love, Class Testator CLASS PROPHECY Tired feet, droopy eyes, faded make-up--that's me! I've just returned from the re- union of the class of '51 of HPMH (at the Sheraton Hotel), Oh, goodness, everyone was there, with husbands, children, pet dogs and cats, and what not, I had just started in the door when I heard a noise I couldn't quite identify. Sol looked around and here came L, Love, a rattling and a bumping down the street in her hepped-up Model A----- Just in from the montains, It seemsthatLoveis playing Dan- iel Boone again as camp nurse for the Girls Scouts, After I got inside, I started toward the elevators but was stopped by what I thought was Ma Kettle and her youngans, but it turned out to be P, Booker and her six kids, On the elevator, I talked to M. Boone and M, Coble who had justbreezed in from Miami, Florida in their new chartreuse buick convertible. They told me about the flat tire they had on the way up. They had to fix it with all they had handy --- you know, allices, kellys, silk, etc. Boy, were they tired from the battle of the bulge. By the way, they're working in O, R, in that Sunshine State, In the dinning room, I was seated beside of K, Holt and A, Caudle --- the Navy girls, Holt looks so different now. Could be that she has put on a little weight -- de- scribed in better terms as two ounces less than a ton, Directly in front of me was seated A, Beck and S. Osborne, sporting sparklers, furs, and bank books. Private duty really pays off now days, doesn't it? Above A, Caudle was seated Mrs, J. B, Shaw, the former Ethel Mae Hill, She is now practicing her profession at home on J, B, Jr. She told me thatshe had readin the local paper an item as follows: Congratulations to Mr, and Mrs, Bob Cain on the arrival of a baby boy , I wondered where Suzie was, Below me, next to K, Holt was seated H, Stewart. Class I reckon! It seems that she has dropped the nursing profession and gone into the modeling business, She told me that I, Baugham was now Assistant Superintendent of Nurses at Ahoskie, N. C, I saw Ivy later in the evening. After dinner, I was starting through the lobby when I bumped into an old friend -- M. Hancock, She was very excited over her new trade -- the lingerie business, It seems that the gift she received one Christmas from the Wolves Club” inspired her and she has been going strong ever since, Hance also gave out with some more surprising news, J. Jarvis has accepted a position of teaching at Johns Hopkins Hospital. And while we were standing there talking about her, she walks up. Jackie told me that A, Caudle wasreally slaying theminthe Navy, The boys in blue had selected her Miss Heartbreak- er of 1960. Wow! Adele, Then the time had drawn nigh for the shindig to break up, sol left--full of food and gossip--and back to my life among diapers, pots and pans, and Army regalia, Billy Carr, Class Prophet 34 PAULINE ABSHER OLLIE DAVENPORT President Vice President JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS BETTY JO LOVETTE JOYCE BURROWS Secretary Treasurer 35 JUNIOR CLASS Pauline Absher June Bivens North Wilkesboro, N. Free me during these hours on duty from preoccupation with my own personal concerns that I may have more energy to deal wisely with their needs, And grant me courage with which tocounteract their fears, patience to cope with their impatience, Create within me a willing spirit of cooperation to- wardthose with whom I work, Teach me to apprec- iate those whose ways are different from my own, O God may my nursing never become meaningless drudgery. May it ever be to me more than making 3 aliving, more, even, than One of the Professions, Sm? May Icome to see my skill as a gift from Thee to be invested in the service of others, ve Ni 4 j= he pe When I am tempted to become indifferent about the - E quality of my work, and when my patience wavers, keep before me an awareness of the Great Physician, I pray, Amen, 3s es te h bow v ol y's F 2 ., a % PROS as Nurse's Home Howell Street Class Room IMAGINATION I can imagine summer vacations In space and commuters to Mars, I can even imagine the movies without Gangsters and glamour and stars; I can imagine a fad for no make-up, For beards and a lack of fat purses, But I can't imagine what Doctors would do If there suddenly weren't any nurses.
