a a eg bese | | nce HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL In 1900 High Point was a rapidly progressing city with a population of about 7,000. Due to the epidemic of typhoid fever at that time there was obviously need for a hospital to care for the sick. The Junior Order, composed of many of the town's leading citizens, conceived the idea of purchasing the prop- erty where the hospital now stands. The eranel esece was renovated and Miss Josephine Coleman, R. N., graduate of St. Andrew's home, Lynchburg, Virginia, was the first superintendent. At this time the financial condition became such that it was decided the best interest of the community would be served if the hospital was controlled by the doctors who used it. Dr. JoheT. Burrus and Dr. Guy F. Duncan agreed to take an option and shoulder the financial obligations amounting at this time to $2,500, and apid the Junior Order for its equity in the property. This took place May 12, 1912. The name of the institution was called the High Point Memorial Hospital. i Shortly after this arrangement was made the right wing and the men's ward was built. The entire building was brick veneered. In 1913 the back wing was added and in 191) the left wing, which included the operati:.g suite, was added. In 191), too, the nursing personnel was moved from the upstairs rooms to a house across the street. The hospital personnel and the student nursing group has grown with the years. The equipment and building have been kept up to date by repair and replacement, including an entirely new X-Ray installation. The back wing of the hospital was extended to include a modern kitchen, diet kitchen facilities and additional patient's rooms. In 1933 the hospital was converted from a private institution to one of community auspices to be operated by a self perteruating Board of Trustees. Because of Dr. Burrus' generosity and his untiring efforts in building up the institution, it was suggested that he be signally honored by giving the hospital his name, thus the name was changed to The Burrus Memorial Hospital, Inc. Dr. Burrus remained Chief of Staff. Dr, Burrus' death, on June 6, 1936, was a great loss to this whole section. Nineteen hundred and forty three brought several fundamental changes to the hospital. The section of the hospital known as Green Hall was set up as an Wbstetrical Department. An affiliation with Children's Hospital, ‘Washington, D. C., was arranged. The Trustees put on a limited campaign to raise funds for a new hospital. This year also saw the consolidation of all hospital facilities in High Point under one govern- ment, and the name was changed again to High Point Memorial Hospital, Inc., with a Boulevard Unit and the Washington Street Unit. The School of Nursing has increased the enrollment to fifty one students. This necessi- tated a new classroom, so in November 19) the new building was officially opened. Later a new modernly equip- ped labor and delivery room were added. Plans for the new hospital are in progress and we look forward to a future of service and growth. 9
