THE HISTORY OF THE HIGH. In 1904, the High Point Memorial Hospital was established by the High Point Junior Order. The site of the present hospital was purchased by the Junior Order and the frame building on it was remodeled. Miss Josephine Coleman, R. N., a graduate of St. Andrews Home in Lynchburg, Va., was put in charge as first superintendent. May 12, 1912, Dr. J. T. Burrus and Dr. Guy F. Duncan bought the hospital. In the same vear a school of nursing was established. Mrs. Josephine McCraney, R. N., was made superin- tendent. She held this position until 1918 when Miss Gilbert Muse, a graduate of the High Point Memorial Hospital, succeeded her. Mrs. McCraney, Dr. D. A. Stanton, and Dr. C. E. Reitzel bought shares of stock in this new organization and the hospital was incorporated. From time to time changes were made in the hospital. ‘The right wing and the men’s ward was built and the entire building was brick veneered. ‘The back wing was added in 1913, and in 1914, the left wing, including the operating room was built. ‘Ihe nursing staff lived on the second and third floors of the hospital. In 1922 the nurses were moved to the present nurses’ home on Howell Street. Dr. H. W. McCain bought Dr. Duncan’s share in the hospital in 1916. In 1919, Dr. Burrus bought all the stock in the hospital except that owned by Dr. McCain. These two men continued to own and operate the hospital until Dr. McCain’s death in October, 1922. ©Dr. Burrus then became sole owner of the hospital. In 1922, Dr. H. L. Brockman came to High Point to take over some of Dr. McCain’s work and to establish a laboratory in connection with the institution. Miss Lillie Pearl Wood, a gradu- ate of the High Point Nursing School became the first technician. The present operating room, five private rooms, a nursery, and a small diet kitchen was added. At this time, Miss Hazel Johnson became part time instructor of nurses. She and the staff doctors planned a compre- hensive program for nursing education. ‘The school has consistently met the requirements of the North Carolina Standardization Board of Nurses’ Training Schools and of the American Hospital Association. The equipment and buildings of the hospital have been kept up to date by repair and replacement. An X-Ray department with new installations has been added: Dr. C. L. Gray is the roentgenologist. ‘The back wing has been extended to include a kitchen and additional patient’s rooms. In 1933 the hospital was converted from a private institution to one under community auspices to be operated by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. The financial transaction involved Dr. Burrus contributing two-thirds of the property valuation and the hospital section of the Duke Endowment contributed one-third. The name of the hospital was changed to and incorporated as the Burrus Memorial Hospital, Inc. Dr. Burrus, untiring in his efforts in build- ing up the institution, remained Chief of Staff. Dr. Burrus died June 6, 1936, and was succeeded by Dr. H. L. Brockman as Chief of Staff. He served in this capacity until the annual meeting in 1942 when Dr. E. A. Sumner was ap- pointed Chief of Staff.

POINT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL On April 1, 1942, Mrs. McCaskill (Miss Gilbert Muse) who had endeared herself during thirty years of faithful, efficient, and consecrated service with the hospital and the community, was succeeded by Mr. J. P. Richardson, who was given the title of Administrator of the Hos- pital. He secured Miss Evelyn Heath as Superintendent of Nurses. Nineteen hundred forty three brought a number of changes to the hospital. In July, Miss Heath resigned and was succeeded by Mrs. E. Irby Long. The section of the hospital known as Green Hall was set up as an obstetrical department. An affiliation in Pediatrics with Children’s Hospital, Washington, D. C., was arranged. The accomplishment of these two steps did much to improve the nursing service and the standards of the school. In this war year, the hospital, under the guidance of Mrs. Long, made application to partici- pate in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps; the application was accepted. In 1943, the trustees began a campaign to raise funds for a new hospital. About $600,000. has been deposited in this fund. Nineteen hundred and forty-three saw the consolidation of all hospital facilities in High Point under one government. ‘This was done because the trustees realized that concerted effort and support would be required to successfully undertake the responsibility of providing a new hospital for the city. Mr. Richardson was made director of the combined hospital and Mr. W. R. Peters was named business manager. In June, 1944, Mr. Peters became Director of the hospital, succeeding Mr. Richardson. A new school building with a lecture room, Nursing Arts Demonstration room, and Diet Lab. was opened in November, 1944. In September, 1945, the school added to its staff an Educational Director, Mrs. Joseph Hawkins, R.N., A.B., and Mrs. Edith Moore Sherrod remained as Nursing Arts Instructor. Mrs. Long resigned October 31, 1945. Mrs. Hawkins served as Director of Education and Superinten- dent of Nurses until Mrs. Robert Johnston, R.N., was secured for the latter position. Mrs. Johnston was succeeded by Miss Rachel Hill Smith, the present superintendent, on April 22, 1946. In November, 1946, a new delivery room, adjoining Green Hall, was begun. At this time the addition is incomplete. At the annual meeting of the board of trustees in December, 1946, Dr. K. B. Geddie suc- ceeded Dr. J. E. Slate as Chief of Staff. The hospital and school are looking forward to a future of service and growth.
