Peabody Institute Library, Peabody 3 1253 00623 741 4 II PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE I ’ I deeply appreciate the opportunity of using the opening page of your YEARBOOK to extend my best wishes and congratulations to this year’s graduates of the Higgins Junior High School. As our enrollment has increased, it is quite . possible that you now attend the largest Junior High School in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. ) In January this year, the United States inaugurated a new President to lead our land. You were present at the birth ij of the Carter Administration and almost all of you will be alive to see its achievements and failures recorded in the ! ' history books. Very soon, like the new President, you will inaugurate a new high school career. You will have count- ! less opportunities to achieve success or experience failure and then your personal history will be recorded. ' I Looking back, you should recall the winter of 1977 for decades to come. Snow and ice, cold and no school” days I plagued or pleased us in the months of January and February. Yet it was during this time period that the Girls’ Basket- ball team won the Greater Boston League title. Not to be outdone, the Boys’ Hockey team in a supreme effort skated to first place in their division in the GBL. However, we shouldn’t forget that your classmates became Co-Champs in the Junior High Football League. All these teams were supported by the most enthusiastic Cheerleaders who gave their all for Higgins at all of our home games. Sports has been the bond that has fostered the Spirit of Loyalty and Cooperation between the players and the coach, the school and the home, and the principal and the parent. Who can forget the excellent singing and dancing in this year’s musical CAROUSEL or the Thanksgiving Dance in the Cafeteria sponsored by the Student Council. There are other memories and activities too numerous to mention, but, they have helped to contribute to your success as a student and as a citizen. You received a good academic program and it is up to you to direct it toward a successful career through further study and instruction. We would be remiss if we didn’t extend our thanks to the Staff and Faculty Advisors who worked for months to make this YEARBOOK possible. Finally, with your Unit Directors, Teachers, Guidance Counselors and Main Office Clerks, I wish you boundless success and happiness as you grow older and wiser with each passing year! Edward J. On the Friday afternoon of October 12, ai ter some of the snow had melted, the awaited spectacle was about to take place. It was noted in the first half that Higgins would probably be triumphant again. All of the Hel- lions ' 28 points were scored in the first two quarters. Half of these were scored by the captain, Davis Scribner, who accounted for two touchdowns and a two point conversion. Other scoring was done by Ed Jodrie and Bruce Mac- Gregor, scoring a touchdown apiece. MacGregor also rushed for a two point conversion. The game ' s MVP was Jack Carvalho. Kennedy accumulated a total of 12 points, which will be of interest only to trivia fans. The JFK loss gave them a 4-3 record on the year. The Higgins Junior High Football Team, however, finished a successful 6-1 season in a tie for the Greater Boston League Title with Medford . (Past scores, other photo, see page 6) ★ ★ ★ Issue 1 the ADVOCATE PETITION WORKS At the beginning of this school year a new rule was a- dopted in regards to the lock- ers . The news was broken to us on the first day of school. We were at first merely displeased with the rule, but more unrest was felt when we began to feel the actual disadvantages of the rule when in effect. Action was taken, and this is what came a- bout . First of all there is the policy itself. It stated that we could go to our lockers only before homeroom, after third period, after sixth, and after school, as an option. Relief came in the shape of a formal document .Modeled after the Dec- laration of Independence, this parchment, engrossed with the signatures of some 200 plus students, was a symbol of our Constitutional right to peti- tion. The petition was presented • to Mr. O ' Connor on Friday, Oct. , 8th. Because of delays,- it was [ not until Nov. 1 that a debate I would take place. Representing I, the students was a boy and a I girl from each grade: From the I, 7th grade - Lori Pierce, Donald Andruskiewicz , along with Mr. O ' Connor . The meeting started as Mr. O ' Connor read the petition a- loud. Then he offered the floor to Peter, who began by mention- ing a few bad points of the new rule along with some of his own complaints about it. From there She said everything else that needed to be said, and came up with the same suggestion that Peter had in mind. That is that we may go to our lockers before homeroom, after second period, after fourth, after sixth, and after school. The rest of the students agreed, and the com- promise was accepted by the teachers. Miss Appiani volun- teered to bring it up at the next teachers meeting. The following Thursday morn- ing the locker committee was called down to the main office to be informed of the decision. At the end of the day an an- nouncement was made. The rule had been altered to meet our proposal. The change would go into effect on .Monday, Nov. 8. The students had succeeded: This was a very important development Jor Higgins Junior High. Although we did not get exactly what we wanted, which was to repeal the rule totally, we obviously accomplished some- thing. Through compromise, we arrived at a reasonable solu- tion agreed upon by both sid s. We proved that through the proper use of our Constitution— s oAutographs.
