Peabody Institute Library, Peabody 3 1253 00623 728 1 Higgins Junior High School PEABODY. MASSACHUSETTS 01960 Edwaf d j. O ' Connor Principal PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE To the graduates of the Higgins Junior High School - the seventh largest junior high school in Massachusetts - I wish to extend my best wishes and congratulations. Like graduating classes before you - you have lived in a period of many crises. During these days - you will recall the energy crisis - the gasoline shortage and the word Watergate . However, it is through this YEARBOOK and its pictures that you will remember a Higgins Musical - a class dance - a victorious athletic team - a Science Fair or even one of our infrequent false alarms. Beyond what I have mentioned - I hope you received an education which will enable you to meet the next challenge on your educational journey. With your Teachers, Counselors, and Unit Directors, I wish you every success as you move ahead. Our thanks go also to the Staff and Advisor who labored so long to make this YEARBOOK possible. When these days are dim and almost forgotten - take out this yearbook and look again at the tender memories of your days at the Higgins Junior High School. Finally, go forth unafraid to meet the future, have faith in your- self, your country and your God. THE WAY WE ARE River flowing idly into sand - Beginning nowhere that I know to drift To nowhere I can find - 1 understand Its slow, erratic force; its pointless shift. Seagull circling near our rowboat ' s wake - Demanding nothing , but a place to cast Its truant shadow; teaching me to make A choice in values that will work and last - Of such are visions made. I ' ve lived to know A dream that ' s forced to being, forced to live Before it knows itself, will never grow. A dream has need for idleness to give It strength to choose to be forever free . My dreams have need for peace . So , let me be . Marilyn E . Conde Art Club 1st Row: J. Linton, D. Soule, L. Mercurio, C. Mogavero, L. Chal- mers, M. Rainey, J. McLaughlin, G. They managed to keep the City Champ ' s trophy by beating Kennedy 16- 14. Coach Gibeley taught the boys that the best defense is a good offense. We ' re glad they followed his advice. Coach Geanoulis brought the basketball team to a final standing of 9 wins-8 losses. Of course, his many fine players helped a little. All in all, it was a team effort and this year ' s team deserves a lot of praise. With the help of Mr. Heil, Coach Geanoulis taught the boys the fundamentals of basketball which made the team what it is today. Every player received plenty of game time which s a tribute to a good team with good leadership. Although they lost more than they won , the Higgins Hockey team showed a lot of spirit. Coaches Gill and Kingston gave the team a lot of confidence in them- selves, which helps any young man. They practiced hard and tried their best , which is all anyone can ask of any team that represents Higgins Junior High School. I I 29 What would you say if I told you Ken Anslone broke up with Dee to go out with ”Ee Danielle LeBlanc got a 65% on her biology notes. Becky Lehto couldn ' t play sports. 1 saw Junior Adams in a barber shop. Sue Broughton drowned . Kelly Farrah and Jody Heague didn’t hang around together. Bob O ' Donnell didn’t talk in civics. Pam Cronin and Anne Baron REALLY wanted to be editors of the yearbook . Brian Douglas didn ' t like all the girls - all the time. Steve Galloway asked a sensible question . Mr. Faria won a laughing contest. Mrs . Vounessea was serious over the P . A . System . Mr. Gillen was really bald. Mrs. Rossetti stopped saying etc. The Math Club , Science Club , and Stamp and Coin Club all met in a phone booth in Peabody Square . Debbie Price didn’t know how to do gymnastics. Denise Pellitier and Nina Marianos didn’t write notes in algebra. Julie Zielski hit a sour note . Mr . Blute lost his lab coat . Patience Alexander lost her patience . Neil Barry missed a basket. Miss Conde got wiped out” . Mr. Osborne told a funny joke. Diane McDuff wore a dress . Nanette LeBlanc got to English on time. Rich Gatti couldn’t play basketball. The Higgins baseball team got any recognition . Writing these things was easy . Ed Mulherin ever lost his temper . Scott Davidson’s middle name is Joseph. Ken Eliuk got a wiffle . Mark Doria managed to make the Patriots along with Steve Brooks - who is still mnning (didn ' t Spectrum say he ' d be running all his life?) Y es , Spectrum is still in printing , though people wonder how it managed to sur- vive without the great editor, Scott Davidson, who is now a big name in . . . um, ah . . . well , a big name . Rich Harding and Kenny Anslono have opened up a barber shop called the Long and Short of It . Bob LeGault and Mike Conrad are in a serious discussion right now . Pam Cronin is watching closely, looks like Bob is still in the matchmaking business. Don ' t worry Pam, I mean it was ten years, but Mike ' s eyes still twinkle. Manny Ataide and Bob Tuttle are working for the School Department now and it took them a few weeks to discover where Higgins was located . Neil Barry is bouncing up and down in his seat right now. Well he always was crazy about basketball. I guess he still is . . . crazy, I mean. Mary Ann Hogan and Brian Douglas seem to be hitting it off. Well Hogie sure is hitting ! ! ! Joe Doo-bee is now the teacher of Romper-Room. Some of his prize pupils are Cindy Karolides, June Langill and Sandy Kerkorian. It is surprising that so many of our students have opened up restaurants. Peabody is blessed wtih Pare ' s de Paris, Hogan ' s Hamburgers, Sperounis ' Spaghetti and Zakas ' Zucchini Kitchen. Ralph Snow and Paul White have opened up an apple stand in Peabody Square . They have seven tiny men as partners. However, we don ' t think that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a good name for an apple stand. Beth Maguire became the first Miss Peabody Square. That ' s quite a long jump from football Queen. Bill Desmond, the well known electrician, shocked the whole class by giving A Final Salute . John Chigas and Rhonda Christ are stars on Broadway today and are playing the lead in Chigas Christ Superstar . The class gave congratulations to Senators , Norma Ouellette , Bill Dow , Carolyn Gardner, who have voted to impeach President Nixon post humorously, many years after he had died of a staff infection and tapeworm. This reunion has been held up waiting for late arrivals such as Nanette LeBlanc , Tom Burns, and Joanne Sheehan. (So what else is new.) It seems that some people have tried to come incognito; Debbie Gagne has a wiffle , Stephanie Batsineles registered as Sylvia . Kathy Daley now has black, curly hair. The Boyds came disguised as each other. The friends that were once departed and now regret it are: Liane Thorpe and Debbie Price . Dawn Rezendes and Julia hunt , Debbie Gagne and Mo Saffer, Scott Davidson and Patience Alexander, Debbie Cribbis and Gloria Covarrubias, Mark Sampsonis and Mike Ryan just to name a few. At the head table, a few members of the faculty of ' 74 are seated: Mr. O ' Connor leads off the reunion with a few words. (A few thousand might be closer . ) Mr. Blute, alias Sir Vival, is wearing his L. A.B. coat, only after ten years it ' s a little yellow . Miss Conde and Miss Tirro have grown a record breaking 2 inches. Linda Ball married a guy named Zinkavich Oon. Now her name is Linda Ball- 42 Oon. By the way, her husband is full of hot air! Chris Bird works at the Stoneham Zoo in the aviary . She feels quite at home there. Mary Coughlin and Jody Bates are now in the modeling ' ' Cle ' ' business. They made a statue of our famous, fantabulous Mr. Blute. Mrs. Lampropoulos isn ' t here anymore. She has moved to Spain, much to the annoyance of Steve Velonis and Mark Sampsonis. Face it guys it was for the best! Mr. Gillen ' s hair isn ' t in a pony-tail for this special occasion. Maybe that ' s why several seats around him are vacant. There ' s one sad thing about this reunion. Mr. Osborne died. 1 guess his jokes got too sick . Some of the people who are still haunted by their last names are: Mark Baker owns a bakery . Bob Church has become a priest . Tom Burns rides on Engine 9. Darlene Soule is a jazz musician. Michael Walker owns a bus company. Zaks 5th Avenue . Steve Correia doesn ' t want to make a lifetime of anything. Marion Currier owns a stable . Joe Cole owns a mine . Jay Holleran is still always yelling. Wayne McDonald owns a farm. Patti Holden opened a dairy farm . Carl Jackson makes it the Jackson 6 . Kathy Morton has become a queen of a country. She only reigns when it pours. Donna Sanger was a singer. Paul Slavin is now master. Ed Tracchia is a throat doctor. Debbie Mazzola melted. Well, that ' s all the news for now. See ya at the next reunion! The Reunion Committee 43 The Way We Were Memories light the comers of my mind. Misty water color memories, of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, 1 Smiles we gave to one another, for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, i Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again. Tell me would we? Could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet. What’s too painful to remember. We simply chose to forget. So it’s the laughter, we will remember. Whenever we remember. The Way We Were. The Yearbook Staff gives special thanks to; Our advisor, Mr. Osborne, for giving us so much time and patience: Miss Tirro, and Mr. Gold berg for taking so many good pictures: Miss Conde, for writing a great poem for us: Mr. O’Connor and the teachers for their contributions of money and class time: The Beverly Times, for allowing us to use some of their sport ' s pictures: The Taylor Publishing Co. , especially Mr. Delaney: The secretaries and teacher ' s aides for their typing. ALSO: Donna Bailey, Stephanie Batsinelas, Judy Bowden, Ruth Peterson, Denise Pelletier, Che- ryl Lovato, Maureen McMahon, Nancy Dolan, Kathy Daley, Jean Caron, Sandy Ponn, Karen McGovern . 47 Autographs 48 f I I t- ' M F “ i • 1 4 i ■ 14 t I! i ' :■ j ii“ i % ■
