This is why the annual is “A Year in Your Life at H.H.S.” The Annual Staff made drastic changes this year. The yearbook is arranged according to the month the activity happened. As you thumb through the 1986-87 Coyote, the year should unfold month by month just as it occurred. 3 SCHOOL: 10' 2 MONTHS LONG?!? The calendar says school began September 2; but for a lot of folks, it actually started around the middle of July. On July 13, five girls and Mrs. Nicholson loaded up in the gray station wagon (hoping and praying it would get them all the way to Amarillo) for Annual Camp. After checking into the Hampton Inn, they unloaded, unpacked, and went to get something to eat. The next three days were filled with new ideas for layouts, covers, and lots of enthusiasm (created by Taylor Publishing Company representatives). While the yearbook staff was still in Amarillo, another group arrived July 16th for the State F.F.A. Convention. Two students received their Lone Star Farmer degrees at this convention — Susan Mann and Billie Jo Whitsitt. Things slowed down until mid-August when the cheerleaders took off for Plainview, TX, for cheerleading camp. They learned many cheers and chants for the new school year. The girls received awards for their cheering abilities and spirit. They received the Spirit Stick twice during the week and got to bring one home. (That’s a real honor, folks!) As they were coming home with sore muscles, a crick in the neck, and blisters, the football team had already started the grueling two-a-day workouts. The young men were up and about by 6 a.m., were out on the field by 7 a.m., and practiced until 9 o’clock. They went home and some worked and some just tried to catch up on sleep or relaxed their sore muscles. They then went back to the fieldhouse and back out on the field by 7 p.m. Many of these work-outs lasted until 9:00 or 9:30 into the evening. The workouts started August 11 and continued for almost two weeks. As you can see, school doesn’t end on May 27th and pick up again on September 2nd, but is generally stretched out for a full year. Top: Diana and Jenean give a big smile for the camera at a home football game. Above: It looks like Stephanie is showing Carrie her blisters from basketball practice. Do they hurt, Steph? Right: It seems Aurthur isn’t too happy with Mrs. Neighbors and she doesn’t really seem to care. 4 r Left: Nathan thinks he’s big man on campus now since Stacy gave him a hug. Middle Left: Freddie, why do you and Jenny look so surprised?!? Below: Matt is telling Ray how it is and Ray seems to be really taking it all in Bottom Left: Lonnie, don’t look so down. You will graduate in twelve weeks, five days, three hours, and how many minutes? Bottom Right: Jennifer, it doesn't look like you are going to have to walk a mile for a smile because Brandi will be glad to give you one. New Year Gets Under Way! The new school year got started September 2. There were many moans and groans, but everyone seemed pleased to see all their friends after the summer vacation. It took about a week or so for the students and teachers to get back into the swing of things, but, nevertheless, things started to go more smoothly. This annual may be a little “outta wack” compared to past books, but we, the Annual Staff, hope that after you see it and flip through the pages, you can remember this year of your life in detail. 6 Top Right: Being casual is an easy task for Arba dur- ing Homecoming Week. Middle Left: Stacy, was your weekend that rough?!? Middle: Billy plays a joke on Hugh while Doug throws in a smile for the camera Right: Chad looks like he has had a rough time on ihe bus trip. Below: Jenean and Susan don’t seem too pleased that the camera caught them. Below Right: The freshmen girls hit a pose and put on their best smiles during Science class. 7 In High School Football This Year . . . Standing: Coach Neighbors. Arba Word Matt Mann Hugh Landers Doug Hardison Shannon Ridgway We came — There were times when it looked like we wouldn’t have enough to suit out a team. Matt Farris got his shoulder hurt — Matt Mann was playing hurt — we only had eight players to begin with. But we came to every game and we surprised a lot of people with our playing! We saw — We saw that a lot of schools were count- ing us out of the competition this year. We were young (no seniors, one junior, four sophomores, and three freshmen). We were few in numbers with only two subs standing on the sidelines. We weren’t as fast as last year, but — We conquered! Hard hitting! Gutsy running! Persistence! Pride! Determination! All eight players and two coaches believed they could win and they did! Miami, a bitter rival fell before the Coyotes! The Homecoming game with Pat- ton Springs was a successful win because the Coyotes kept fighting. Half the team made the All-District team. Success isn’t always measured in points! THIS TEAM WAS A WINNER! 9 Matt goes for a first down against Miami. Middle Right: The Coyotes work hard to get down this New Home player. SQUADS RALlY TOGETHER TO BOOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Top Row: Kathy Colby, Jenny Smelley, Linda Montgomery, Socorro Ochoa. Bottom Row: Tishia Appel, Charissa Ziegenbein, Brandi Schwab, Susan Mann, Diana Wall. The cheerleaders this year worked hard to keep the spirit kicked up at H.H.S. They began right after tryouts to raise money for uniforms and continued the fund raisers throughout the summer. The squad spent many hours working on signs and locker tags to brighten the halls of Higgins High. The girls weren’t alone, though. The pep squad was right along with them through all the paint dribbles on signs and the pep rallies that never seemed to pick up speed. Both squads helped keep the spirits flying high among the students, teachers, athletes, and fans. 12 Left: Jennifer, Gina, Carrie, Billie and Julie stop and try to remember one of the seven cheers that they learned at camp Middle Left: Brandi is caught by the photographer while making one of the many run-through signs Middle Right: Brandi, Ziggy. and Gina all hit a pose on their way to a pep club meeting Below: Julie thinks Gina. I, Lonnie Colby, being of fairly sound mind and body, do will my ability to never wreck a vehicle during my high school years to Jeff Longhofer who can’t seem to keep it out of the way of roadside reflectors!!! I, Chad Appel, being the way I am, do hereby will to Jeff Longhofer my ability to find a clean tissue to blow my nose. To Lonnie Colby, I will the ability to back out of the garage without hitting the side. To Matt Mann, I will my mule because he doesn’t have one to ride. In ten years, we see Jimmy Moser as a bouncer at Gilleys, after completing his training at the Ag farm by throwing pigs in the stock trailer. In ten years, we see Lonnie Colby taking over the Budwiser Corporation and buying ownership papers of Spuds McKenzie. In ten years, we see Chad Appel turn his shop into a bar and strip joint for mechanics only. I, Susan Mann, will to Diana Wall and Kathi Colby all the fun I had my Senior year. I, Jenean Hanan, being as sound in mind and body as a Senior can get, do hereby will my musical ability to Billie Sue Nicholson and hope that she will go as far and have as much fun as I did. In ten years, we see Susan Mann as the leading lady in demolition derby, after getting her first taste of crunching metal the Fourth of July. In ten years, we see Jenean Hanan playing the piano and singing at Carnegie Hall. 15 Seniors Do Their Thing at HHS... Don’t strain yourself, Chad! Juniors Make Ring Selections Monday, November 3, was an exciting day for the Juniors. They had to make the difficult decisions about class rings. Two men from different ring companies were here to show their displays of rings. Jerry Behrens came from Canyon to show his beautiful display of rings from Herf Jones. Jim Morgan from Amarillo came to show his complete line of Jostens class rings. Among the display of rings were William Perry’s size 23 Superbowl ring and Roger Staubach’s $5000 ring. After seeing both displays, the Juniors finally decided to buy from Jostens. They seemed to be pleased with their final choice and will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of these important rings!!! Their plans included a full day of shop- ping and watching movies. The class then decided that they were getting hungry, so off to Garsky’s they went. Jim showed his “good” manners and Matt gave the entertainment which included juggling. The couple at the next table were so taken with this they moved to the other side of the restaurant. Freshmen Join Ranks of HHS Freshmen — fish — underclassmen — slaves — whatever you want to call them, this is their first year in high school. They are new to the high school scene, but their presence is felt because they have the largest class. They swarm their lockers between classes and wherever they are, they cause a commotion! They have made their presence felt on the basketball team, the football team, and they are well on their way to bigger and better things at HHS! Halloween this year was dif- ferent from the years before. Since there was a football game on Halloween night, we decided to trick-or-treat on Nov. 1. There wasn’t a carnival that night, but the Sophomores and Juniors still had their haunted house. Even though the weather was bad they had a good turn-out. The people met at the school and were taken out to the house in the Coyote van. After their visit to the spook house, they were given refreshments and taken back into town. Monday morning, Nov. 3, we had a few visitors in and around the school. The teachers came early to find a chicken on the flag pole and one in the girls bathroom (found by Mrs. Satter- white). There was also one found nesting in Ray Borges’ locker. In the Air Tonight This year’s prom was a little bit different from the years before. It was held at the Community Center with a dance by Q-102 following. After weeks of planning, the decorations began to come together to make one of the best proms ever held in Higgins. The Juniors began on a balloon chandelier and Saturday, March 21, the Community Center was beautifully decorated in blue and silver for the “big” night. The mothers of the Juniors made the dinner con- sisting of beef stroganoff, broccoli with cheese sauce, baked potatoes, hot rolls, and strawberry shortcake, with tea to drink. They worked most of the afternoon cooking and they fixed plates while the Freshman and Sophomore servers served the guests at their tables. It was beautifully done and couldn’t have been done without them. Mr. Farris brought the entertainment. He acted as a game show host and conducted “The New Match Your Date Game.” The contestants were Matt and Cari Furguson, Mr. and Mrs. Mann, Coach and Mrs. Neighbors, and Nathan Paul and Jamie Folks. To add sound to the game, Mr. Farris used a bell and an antique horn off of a Model A Ford. Nathan and Jamie won the game! The benediction was given and the banquet was over! After a quick cleanup, the dance started and there was a great turn-out!
