We have tried to lay out each page to cover the year as best as possible to help you remember this year exactly as it was. This is why we have given this annual the scrapbook look. Our goal, as the Annual Staff, is to put as much as we can into the space provided, so that in 20 years, when you are reminiscing with your spouse by the fireplace, you can use the 1983 Coyote as your guide. We hope you will enjoy this annual as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. I n t r € d II c t i € n The Annual Staff Mark Farris The Annual Staff would like to dedicate the 1983 Coyote in memory of a beloved friend, Mark Farris. We all knew and loved Mark for his mischievous personality. There was never a dull moment — Mark could always add spunk and humor. Mark touched many lives and when he did, he left them with a sparkle. We will never forget his ornery smile and wonderful laugh. We each have our own memories of him. Teachers remember his classroom ability and his fun-loving charm. He was down-to-earth and practical. Students remember him each in their own way — as a friend, a leader, an intense competitor, and a daredevil. We all miss him, but feel richer for having known him. 3 High Schccl Faculty Linda Nicholson Business lohn Hanan Science Kathy Hoi la way Librarian W. O. The home-ec boys painted their fingernails. The Sophomores and Juniors took a Library Reference Skills Test. The Seventh grade class took a President's Physical Fitness Test. The Higgins Coyotes won their foot- ball game Friday night against Rochester. Justy and Courtney were playing with fire while wearing goofy glasses during some recent experiments in chemistry. Jared Neighbors saw a German Sunday. Jannie took pictures all day Friday without any film in her camera. The Seniors went to WTSU for col- lege day Tuesday. The high school girls basketball team started after-school practice Monday. The Jr. High and High School basket- ball girls took their physicals at Canadian. Joe Walker has been in the Canadian hospital. Several of the Seniors took ACT Tests Saturday. School Meuse Hi! I'm the School Mouse! I live here in HHS. Since school started I'm getting lots of good stuff to eat. The kids always drop Doritos or throw M M's at each other. On the 26th I saw all the Seniors packing into Mr. Hanan's room so I scurried up Mark Graham's Locker and peeped through the window to see what was going on. They were having a class meeting. Can you believe they didn't even elect class officers. All they did was argue over who would initiate whom. Then they planned the initiation party. I heard someone mention Pizza Hut and I can't wait! There is always cheese in those places! On September third I hid in a box of sandwiches and went to Texline to watch the Coyote's season opener. Before the game I decided to take a nap in the defroster of the bus. When I woke up, you wouldn't believe what I found hanging from the fan in the guys' bus! Later while the game was being played and I was sitting in the stands, a man chirped out I hope the boys don't lose.” Before the statement could be corrected light- ning struck the rail around the stands and gave us all a jolt. It also burned a hole in a man's pants! This put an end to the unintelligent statements. Well, I hear Mrs. Wiederstein is having pizza for lunch today so I'm going to go check it out. Did you know she buys cheese in huge blocks??!! The first time I saw one of them, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! See ya next time! 7 t Class of ’83 UjL, britcKn $Uk a gg. In 10 years we see Major Courtney Paul as the official army human thermometer on a top secret mis- sion. Carry on Patton. In 10 years we see Laura in her Gucchi store designing clothes and making Sammy model them. In 10 years we see Jannie on the road to Canadian still looking for her cowboy.” In 10 years we see Scotty as leader of the Bum Forces against Commi Pinko's and Dingbats. In 10 years we see that Brenda has come back to Higgins to take over her mother's job as tax collector. In 10 years we see Spencer still under the hood of his Z, it seems something is wrong with high gear. He's still trying to beat Ronnie's gunboat. In 10 years we see Phil on patrol around Lake Vincent. He took over Mr. Mosley's place as an Oklahoma game warden when he retired. In 10 years we see that Don is still trying to figure out the real purpose of a goal line. In 10 years we see Robin dragging Main in her blue Ford Maverick. She has finally saved enough money so she could buy it from her dad. In 10 years we see Jerri in Red Bud working her way up to the top. It seems she's finally made it up to sack girl. In 10 years we see James and Paul as co-authors of a book titled Brotherly Love.” In 10 years we see Jennifer Bruiser” Blackwood as the first lady Sumo wrestler. In 10 years we see Ronnie with a permanent cast on his arm. He says it saves time and money this way. In 10 years we see that Marty is trying to set a world endurance record by skiing across the Atlantic Ocean. We guess his adventures at Lake Foss got to him. In 10 years we see Dawn married to Lance and living in Woodward. Higgins was just too exciting for her. In 10 years we see Traci with 10 kids. She said there wasn't anything to do but watch TV. In 10 years we see Robert still trying to get his pickup to run. 14 17 e n Debbie Meredith loe Walker Ynacio Ochoa 20 THIS PACE SPONSORED BY ELLIS COUNTY BUILDING AND SUPPLY and MASON FUNERAL HOME Lumber and building materials Located on Main Street Ready Mix Concrete Shattuck, Oklahoma 73858 121 West Second, Shattuck, OK 73858 Phone 405 938-2521 Phone: 405 938-2212 € I a $ $ r a v € r i t e $ 22 Seniors Laura Kraft and Scott Fritzlen Sophomores Rhea Word and Travis Black Juniors Donna Nicholson and Mark Graham Freshmen Bonnie Detrixhe and Elly Burt Sophomore Class Travis Black, President; Jimmy Burt, Vice-President; Rhea Word, Secretary-Treasurer Freshman Class Joe Walker, President; Tim Mingus, Vice-President; Delyna Russell, Secretary-Treasurer Junior Class Mark Graham, President; Justy Smelley, Vice-President; Donna Nicholson, Secretary-Treasurer Senior Class Laura Kraft, President; Scott Fritzlen, Vice-President; Brenda Pierce, Secretary-Treasurer c I a $ $ € f f i c e r $ 23 Activities and Organizations mm l Fin Animals Will Be Led Te Shew Bing by Laura Kraft Fort Worth, Houston, San An- tonio! San Antonio in two weeks, Houston in fopr, and then the County Show Mardf IO- 11, Mr. Mann and his ag. students will be kept busy traveling. Livestock shows consist of a lot of hard work and long hours. The animals weight tgone of the first aspects to be considered when getting into the 1 $hov|s. We feel like Ken should be given credit as a great bus driver, part-time coach, fan and friend. As a bus driver, Ken always made us feel at ease. Many Seniors remember the fun they have had with Ken. He has driven the Trailways bus for the football trips ever since they were freshmen. He also drove the bus on their Senior trip to Florida. Ken, better known to Higgins kids as Mr. T, came all the way to Hig- gins to watch a football practice and to give the boys some pointers. At the games he drove to, we always saw him on the sidelines, wearing his orange jersey and coaching shoes, helping Coach Neighbors. After driving the bus all day, Ken and Roseanne came all the way from their home in Amarillo to Hig- gins to watch the Homecoming game. That's love and dedication as a fan. Again, there he was on the field beside Coach Neighbors. Mr. T is also a good friend. We grew to love Ken as we grew to know him. We, the Annual Staff, feel he deserves to be remembered here — in the sports memories. 45 1982 Ccyctes FRONT ROW: Scotty Fritzlen, Mark Graham, Marty Ashpaugh, Elly Burt, Jim Pierce MIDDLE ROW: Jimmy Burt, Rod Stucker, Joe Walker, Phil Detrixhe, Justy Smelley BACK ROW: Courtney Paul (Manager), Don Pearston, James Colby, Travis Black, Larry Neighbors (Coach) SCOTTY FRITZLEN Senior MARK GRAHAM Junior JOE WALKER Freshman PHIL DETRIXHE Senior TRAVIS BLACK Sophomore COURTNEY PAUL Manager MARTY ASHPAUGH Senior JIM PIERCE Sophomore LARRY NEIGHBORS Coach IAMES COLBY Senior DON PEARS T ON Senior JUSTY SMELLEY junior RODSTUCKER Sophomore IIMMYBURT Sophomore ELLY BURT Freshmm 49 Hcmeccming Kins and Cueen Scctt Fritzlen and Laura Kraft licmeccming Attendants Phil Detrixhe and Donna Nicholson Connie Detrixhe and Marty Ashnaufih ____________________________________________51 ALL-DISTRICT PLAYERS PHIL DLTPIXHL 1st Team Center 1st Team Defensive Lineman BONNIE DETRIXHE 1st Team ALL-DISTRICT SCOTT FRITZLEN 2nd Team Linebacker LAURA KRAFT 2nd Team ALL-DISTRICT ELLY BURT 2nd Team Running Back 1982-83 Lady Ccyctes Coach Mitch Van Horn, Trudy Ashpaugh, Donna Nicholson, Bonnie Detrixhe, Laura Kraft, Sharia Benge, lannie Black, Meena Patel, Rhea Word (Delyna Russell, not pictured) GROSS' CIRCLE C CAFE Box 49 Arnett, OK 73832 Phone: 405 885-4311 24 lake and Mary Gross THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY and ELLIS COUNTY CAPITAL Box 236 Arnett, OK 73832 Phone: 405 885-4251 Pnnting Our Specialty MEENA PATEL Sophomore LAURA KRAFT Senior DONNA NICHOLSON Junior JANNIE BLACK Senior 57 , basketball bins and Cueen Spencer and Laura Pidaway_______________Kraft Basketball Attendants Marty Ashpaugh Rhea Wcrd Donna Nicholson Jee Walker B. Last Monday each student received a list of contenders and a ballot with all of the honors to be chosen. After a lot of consideration and thought, the votes were counted. For class favorites, these were the students chosen: Senior favorites are Scotty Fritzlen and Laura Kraft. In the Junior class there was a tie for the boy, but after a tie breaker Mark Graham and Donna Nicholson were named winners. Favorites for the Sophomores were Travis Black and Rhea Word. Last but not least, for the Freshmen Elly Burt and Bonnie Detrixhe were chosen. The rest of the Favorites were voted on by the entire High School. It's that merry time of year again, and the second, fourth, and sixth graders showed their Christmas spirit by presenting a pro- gram on Thursday, December 9. The second graders presented Santa and the Stowaway. It was a play about Santa, portrayed humorously by Brady Pool, who was disgusted with the children because he was never thanked or ap- preciated for the gifts he has given them from Christmases past. Melissa Wiederstein entertained the audience between the first and second plays with a piano solo. She played O Come All Ye Faithful. The fourth graders presented The Christmas Story. It was a story about the real meaning of Christmas, Christ's birthday. Mary and Joseph were played by Christy Berry and John Thompson. Chris Schwab entertained the au- dience between the second and third plays with his piano solo Hark the Herald Angels Sing.'' The sixth graders presented three different plays. Arba Word played a cowboy Santa” Claus irPTexas That Is. Christmas Around the World was about an elf who didn't want to be one anymore, until two representatives from various coun- tries shared their Christmas customs with Santa's elves. The sixth graders also presented Twas the Night Before Christmas. Brandi Schwab entertained with her piano solo Suzy Snowflake. Mrs. Van Horn told the audience that the kids had really worked hard on learning these plays. She said that some were quite difficult for the students to learn. They all did a real- ly nice job and everyone is proud of all the kids. They had a pretty good turnout, with a total sales of $1758. Mrs. Nicholson, the annual advisor, said that the way it looks the total sales is going to be about average compared to the past few years. Booker, Darrouzett, and Follett sales were down when compared to last year, however. The staff is planning to make another try to these three towns to see if they can't bring in some more money. They will be going to all of the hometown businesses within the next few days to sell ads to them. The members who went to Cana- dian to sell ads were Jannie Black, Trudy Ashpaugh, Bonnie Detrixhe, Delyna Russell, Wesley Beck, and Paul Colby. Donna Nicholson, Rhea Word, and Jerri Waddill went to Shattuck and Arnett. Laura Kraft got Booker and Debbie Meredith and Tim Mingus went to Follett and Darrouzett. 105 FIRST NATIONAL BANK Main Street Higgins, Texas 79046 DeAnn Williams — Secretary 106 JOHN FRITZLEN Accountant P.O.
