C put Mother and I on the stay at home lrst It was always my duty to go on errands As I grew older I trred of walkrng so I asked father for a saddle horse I-Ie laughed and told me I couldnt ride but I wasnt that casrly discouraged for I had rrdden before and thought I could agarn Finally father consented and brought me home a chestnut colored saddle horse they had told Father that Dolly was clever and easy to rrde That very nrght I decided Id take her when I went after the cows a short distance from the farm I was surprised to haye her canter off over through the lane as rf rt were a tarred road After I got the cows rounded up I found by her actrons that she didnt like then com pany At lirst she trred walkrng on her hrnd legs then farlrng to throw me she trred walk rng on her front legs I managed to stay wrth her though I ve wondered rnce how I ey er drd She must have known that I was beconrrnv oyer confident for she turned qurckly and I landed face down rn the drrt unrnyured I had been there only a splrt second when she came toward me I threw me from her oack and went home She got the best of me that time but she has never trred to throw me srnce Dolly rs strll my means of cony ey ance even though father now owns a car Lors Patten 40 ANOTHER FISH STORY It was about the mrddle of July when Harl my father and I decrded that we need cd a day fishrng Therefore the nest Satur day morning saw us startrrrg for the Mohfryyl Stream It was about 630 A M when we arrry ed and Harl sard You put on your boots and go rnto the streanr fishrng down towards South Branch and Ill follow about fifty yards be hrnd you We started down stream and about an hour passed Suddenly I heard Harl say to me Don come here a mrnute I reeled rn my lrne as qurckly as possrble and hurried back I found Harl standrng on the bank wrth hrs feet braced behind two stout alders that grew by the bank It so happened that he had been Iishrng wrth hrs steel rod wholly closed As rt was SCROLL the one hundred pound pull cord was as tas 1 G s Don Harl sard take the net and get out there as qurtkly as you can I grabbed the r e :rr d yy aded out rrrto rrrrd strtfrrrr There rn rnrd strefrrn was the lfrr est trout I lad eyer seen rn my lrfe He was at least tyyo feet lon and was Clplltlllg, tlrrs way 'Ind that I finally got the net rrght under hrm and yy'r bout ready to lrft hrm out of the yvater yyl cn my feet slrpped and down I yvent Dur rr g the threshrng around the trout slrpped hrs hook and darted ayyay I rrnagrne many of you wrll thrnk that thrs rs just another fish story but so help me this one rs true Thelma Bradford 10 THFRE Is AN ART TO KNOW HOW TO TEACH I belreve that Amerrcan students are not stuprd but Amerrcan teachers yery common ly are They are paid to teach out or drnarrly thcy mrss the mark bv a thousand leagues I haye heard that a college professor was on beard to complarn about hrs clas es He sard trat they filed rnto hrs room arranged them c'-tpressronless faces 'rs so marry phonogrfrp rs to make records of what he sard Then yyhen the bell ran they got up and filed our 'rgarn This was repeated three or four trmes each day for nrrre months rn the year I wonder that the professor drdrrt get drs gu ted and tlrroyy up the whole monotonous art of teaching Any teacher yyho understands how to teach should haye oyerfloyyrn classrooms By the teachers questrons conversatrons and rnformfrl dr cussrons yyrth all the students he should succeed rn garnrng popularrty yyrth all cf them Tlrrs great 'rrt of tefrchrrrg natural lv depends hoyyey er upon the cooperation of the student yyrth the teacher Students art hr man and enjoy lrfe And yyhen they haye a meanrrrt, for lrfe they lrl e and understand Some tea hers do haye overflowing class rocnrs Such teachers are rare The courses that he teaclres are not snaps erther but drd you eyer stop to reco nrze the fact that the students enjoy studyrng under such fr one?
