We leave with a better understanding of education and of life. We would like to thank all our teachers for many years of hard work and devotion. The friendship has been wonderful and will always be remem- bered. We would also like to thank each and every member of the faculty for their time and patience. Also, to all those very spe- cial teachers who gave an extra part of their time to help students, you will always be loved and remembered . P ' 'T frm Z 5 J so-5 ix -HC-. X CLASSES 8 In the madness of the morning, you rush to your first period class, English. You make a mad dash into the door trying to beat the bell. Then it's off to Math, everyone's favorite class. The morning comes to an end when you hurry out. You sigh and walk into your elective . Then as the day moves on you happily continue on to Science, knowing full well lunch is next. So after lunch you practically run the 600 to the gym for so it seemsl and when you finish your lump- ing lacks you find your stomach is not in place . You finally recover from your P.E. class and you push and shove your way to Social Studies. And when the end of 6th period comes, you ven- ture into the halls with a sigh of relief knowing just one more left to go. W '?a1'w.! A special night could be mean going to the movies or the civic center to hear Chicago, Doobie Brothers, or Aerosmith perform. When parents are cooperative , students find weekend entertainment by attending or throwing a party. Tanglewood Mall provides another Saturday pastime. Places such as Pappy's and Time Out have become favorite hang-outs. Even a teacher might be found shopping at Coun- try Legend, Jeans West or Wrangler Wranch. All-in-all, most weekends are pretty exciting and full of things to do. If nothing else, weekends can be regarded as simply a break from a week of work. And a Qpecia I , . eekend The second weekend in October was a special one for the first semester Oceanography class of Hidden Valley. They spent their three day vacation at Virginia Beach exploring ocean life and just enjoying themselves. Activities included studying the ocean and its plant and animal life , cruising on a research vessel, and collecting specimens. Meanwhile, back home in Roanoke, most members of the Hidden Valley bands spent Saturday competing against several other junior high schools in the second annual Pack- a-Pacer contest. Hidden Valley came in second and received S150 for their efforts. While members were being packed into a Pacer, the spectators were having loads of fun. Nil U QW wht 3 Twill! Activities, such as: Grade Days, clubs, food drives, Toys for Tots, and a special event, the Walk-a-Thon, Cfor which H.V. was awarded a free dance for collecting the most pledgesj all provide enjoyment or student participation. Organizations, such as: Band, Choir, Drama, S.C.A. , Yearbook, and Newspaper, help students to be included in the areas to which they are most interested . I7 m Student Council Association The S.C.A. is a group of representatives chosen to sup- port the student body's ideas and opinions. This group consists of first period presidents, grade rep- resentatives, and the execu- tive council. The functions of the S.C.A. are: to provide a place for stu- dents to come with sugges- tions, to promote clubs, and to represent the student body at P.T.A. meetings and social activities, such as: Food Drives, Toys for Tots, Special grade days, Dances, and Walk-a-thons. At the beginning of the year the students in the ninth grade class picked the one which they preferred to work with. The areas from which they had to choose were sports, features and news. They performed various tasks to keep the students informed about both old and present happenings on subjects in the groups they chose. I A new half year elective class was added for the eighth grade students. It gave them a better insight into just exactly what is involved with the pro- ductions of both annual and newspa- per. The opportunity is presented at Hidden Valley in a variety of ways - Tacky Day, Superstars Day, the Faculty Halloween Party, and Strange Anonymous. To an outsider, these things might seem a lit- tle strange, but we at Hidden Valley realize that they are only means of breaking the monot- ony. ,gyr- Copposite pagejz Ctopj: Teachers celebrate Halloween. fmiddlejz Superstars Day for seventh grade Cbottom lefty: Strange Sponsors. fbottomjz Strange remains anonymous. ftop lefty: Tacky Day for sixth grade. Band solos were performed by Kevin Mahaffy on the french horn, and Chris Tilt on the tenor sax. The stage band rendered four songs, one of which is a favorite, ' 'Tater Patch. As the erformance came to a close, Clliristmas presents were presented. Mrs. Kyle received a ten speed bicycle' while Mrs. Wise received a tennis racket. l 1 1 .ix .1 K Ir ', A , . I x. nw. Whether they coach basketball, football, volleyball, gymnastics, or track, each has the goal to make his team the best. Each coach puts much of his or her time and patience into the team they are coaching. When the team is practicing or playing, a part of the coach is out there with them going through each move. When the team wins, the coach has a feeling of personal victory. The opposite holds true with losing. At the end of the season, the coach can reflect and relate to the team's past falls and triumphs. But one thing can be said, if the coach feels the team gave everything they had no matter what the record, then he can feel something was accomplished. They toiled long hours in the hot August sun and the cool Septem- ber evenings. Slowly, but surely the team was whipped into shape. Muscles were toned and weight was lost as they performed calisthentics, practiced different plays, and ran wind sprints. Practices would sometimes seem never ending, but when they did, team members would crawl to the showers and water fountains to quench their thirsts and wash a hard workout's sweat from their bodies. The rewards reaped from all this work were sometimes great and sometimes small. Games were lost and games were won, but one could safely say it was an interesting and exciting expe- rience. r .n A w N - E! , ' N A , nf!! X! If J ,F f 'rv X PM N.-Q - 'ml ', ' I Tgg F-fi. Although they only lost four games, two to Northside and two to Cave Spring, they ended up in third place in the conference with eleven wins and four losses. It is a fast moving game in which points may be scored by a spike at the net or a close call on boundaryrlines. The game requires much hard work by team members to perfect their moves on the court. Hidden Valley traditionally has produced championship calibre teams. This year's team was no exception. The girls were coached, this season, by Mrs. Ferguson. - H111 -- 1:29552 ll Cfrontyz KL-RJ: Bettina Altizer Lisa Apostolou CCo-Captainj Mickey Smith CCO-Captainb Iulee Doss fbackj: QL-RJ: Jenny Johnson Barbara. Callahan Tarran Cropper Cindy Warring Lisa Wiggins Carol Hudson Martha Finfgeld Myra Powers QMgr.J Robyn McFarland S Long Hours Track is not a spectator sport. It's not full of glamorous lights and bright-eyed cheerleaders, nor does it have crowds of students to root the team to victory. Track is an individual sport requiring individual effort and training. The events such as shot put, pole vaulting, high jump, and mile relay are practiced for long hours until the final moment when their true skill and speed are tested. The mal Score The final score has been totaled and run up on the scoreboard. The fans have left the gym and Hidden Valley has completed another year of sports. BUT the memories will remain in the minds of all the people who participated at Hidden Valley this year. First, the coaches who devoted many hours of their time and patience developing their team members. Secondly, the players who worked hard and long trying to better their sport skills, and finally, the fans, who cheered the different teams on to victory and showed sympathy after a loss. Yes, the year is over, but by glancing at the pictures on the preceding pages the events can be relived. ...L L-im ' Adminisirafion Faculfg Qiaff For Those Who Will Follow This has been a very difficult year for me person- ally because of the changing attendance lines. These new lines will cause a majority of students who are now at Hidden Valley to go to other schools next year. The students from Glenvar who will be going to Glenvar Junior High School and the students in the annexed area who will be going to City Schools will be missed next year. We wish all of you well. We will try to do everything within our power to make the transition easier for all of our students. We hope that you will give to your new schools the loy- alty and the leadership that you have given while students here at Hidden Valley. From those of you who remain at Hidden Valley, we will ask for continued and increased leadership so that we can bounce back from the loss of these stu- dents and maintain our high standards both individu- ally and collectively as a school. I have certainly enjoyed working with each of you during this past year, and I would especially like to mention the newspaper staff and officers of the SCA who have done an outstanding job. We hope that those of you who leave us will continue your fine leadership at other schools. You have left a fine herit age for those who will follow you. My best wishes will go with all of you dur ing your next school years. QLLOYD FARTHINGJ With Hidden Valley becoming a Junior High School we had the task to con- tinue high standards in the expansion of the already varied academic and ath- letic programs. The excellent response of our students and staff to this task made the transition a tremendous success. This feeling of togetherness makes me proud to say that I am part of your school. CDAVID PRICED This has been our first year as a Junior High School and has brought several changes in our school both from an academic and athletic stand point. The addition of the ninth grade has added greatly to our curriculum. We have a full Junior High Athletic Program that has allowed many more students to par- ticipate. The discipline and spirit of the student body has been the best ever. We greatly appreciate your support. fMURPHY SCOTTJ Q .f15 ,W A , Each Add a LiHIe . . . It seems like just yesterday that our first of four years began at Hidden Valley. We remember everything so clearly: it is as if each event that has taken place has been so recent that no time sequence can be established because everything seems to have run together. During our sixth grade year things were so puzzling and scary, yet interesting. We can remember thoughts and feelings of finally being part of something other than the baby routines of our former elemen- tary schools . ' When our second year rolled around, having adjusted we felt that we actually did belong. All of the strange new interests and ideas started to sink in and the road ahead , that we were to follow , seemed clear. In eighth grade thoughts of leaving many of our close friends who were made over the school years brought many sad feelings. Thinking it was our last year, we tried to make the most of it, but annexation and the changing of Hidden Valley to a Ir. High School upset our plans. Here we are again in our fourth year. Knowing that this is our last , we are making plans to go on into our individual high schools. This year was filled with many firsts. Hidden Valley added football, wrestling, and track teams to its other sports, along with several new academics. Probably, the thing that will be remembered the most about this 1976-1977 school year is the winter. Its snow caused the school to be closed eight days and its severity caused a gas shortage and the closing of school for an additional two days. Now that the time for leaving has finally come, we would like to thank everyone on the staff for their hard work and participation which went into creating this annual. There is one person in particular that we would like to thank, our Advisor, Mr. Robert Cutrara. For his moral support and long hours spent working with us trying to help develop our ideas and teach us what goes into the production of an annual for two years now we have had the priv- ilege of working under his guidance . Some days he probably feels that we would have been better off stay- ing at home . But then on others, things really seem to get accomplished and fall into place. Without him, none of this would have been possi- ble. As this, our ninth grade year, comes to a close there are feelings of self-confidence and accomplishment gained at Hidden Valley that will be taken with us perhaps only as memories as we go our separate ways! 49 . 4 h Lim Lj .
