Administration Handle Mr. Normand Jones, Superintendent of the Hicksville Schools, is a respected citizen in our community. He worked diligently to promote the school bond issue. With con¬ stant effort, he strives to improve our facilities and curriculum. Our superin¬ tendent has a good sense of humor, an understanding of students, and a desire to make Hicksville High School a better edu¬ cational institution. With all these quali¬ ties, it is not difficult to understand why he is thought of with high regard. In the office, Mr. Jones is assisted by the capable school secretary, Mrs. Lura Thiel. As on a football field, teamwork is the key to a successful outcome. Occasionally our superintendent takes out a few minutes to practice his golf game. Also, he may be seen snapping candid shots with his camera. During the summer months he finds time to relax and enjoy the out-of-doors; even then, he must make plans for the coming school year because every detail needs his personal attention.

Board Strives for Better Facilities School Board members are certainly the “unsung heroes” of the community. These busy people are willing to give their valuable time to promote better educational facilities for the youth of Hicksville. Serving with little compensation, this group holds numerous meetings during which they make vital de¬ cisions that affect the entire community. Actions of the School Board have much effect on the community. Through a great deal of effort, the Junior High will be moved to the elementary build¬ ing where an addition is to be built. Their present work is concentrated on the passing of another bond levy which will provide additional classrooms, cafeteria, and a modem gymnasium. a new 19

Problems Efficiently Our office is the hub of all school activities. Office responsibilities in¬ clude keeping all financial records, checking attendance, scheduling ath¬ letic events, ordering and handling all films used by teachers, recording grades and informing the community about all school affairs. Mrs. Thiel is proud of her capable office girls. Since there is so much to do in a school office, student assist¬ ants are necessary. They type, file, make duplicate copies of important notices, and check attendance. The office girls receive one-half credit for their services. Working in the office gives the girls actual secretarial prac¬ tice which proves to be valuable to them in seeking a job after graduation. Delores Osmun, Janet Massie, Linda Hilbert, Phyllis Sweeney, Shirley Little, Mrs. Lura Thiel (school secretary), Barbara Arnold, and Sharon Tustison form this year’s efficient office staff.
