WERE IIERE If one could turn back the pages of time to September, 1942, you would see 68 shy and bashful seventh graders roaming the corridors of our high school building. They would be asking questions like these - Where's room 37 - What subject do we have now ?'LorJ'Why do we have to run up and down stairs so much? We also felt that the secondary curriculum should be changed so as to allow us time for recess. Strangely enough these shy and backward creatures turned out to be the Class of '48, After adjusting ourselves, we elected our officers who were Ora Miller, Floyd Kimple, and Carol Sackrider-President, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer res- pectively. We had Mrs. Culler and Mr. Kunkle as our advisors. Our two class parties consisted of contests, dancing, and refreshments. Next year, for some reason, 58 of us returned as big kids , in other words, eighth graders. The officers elected were as follows: President, Betty Tomlinson, vice-president, Pat Wyckoff and secretary-treasurer, Deloy Preston. Our class parties were about the same as our seventh grade parties. By this time we were Freshmen, we felt that this whole cycle had started over, for now, our hair would almost stand on end when anyone mentioned initiation , Calming ourselves, we elected Ora Miller as President, Naomi Lantz as vice-presi- dent, and Anna Neidhardt as secretary-treasurer. The sponsor for our class, which now totaled 57, was Mr. Snorf. At last, as Sophomores, we could be free from all fears concerning initiation. We chose Dick Moore as President, Bill Cleland as vice-president, and Anna Neidhardt as secretary-treasurer. The majority vote of our 56 members determined as our motto- Life is but a picture, so paint it well , our class flower-white carnation, and green and white as our class colors. Finally, that glad day came when we met with our officers and sponsor, Mrs. Culler, to order our class rings and pins. With our total now down to 47, we entered school as the Junior Class. Many in our class were active members in band, chorus, Latin Club, G.A.A., F.F.A., basket- ball, football and many others, therefore, it kept us all busy trying to earn money to cover our expenses. We feel that we were very successful in our Junior year, which included three main undertakings. We published the Spoondrift every two weeks, our junior-Senior Banquet theme, Spring in a Dutch Garden seemed to go over very well, and last, but certainly not least, our class play, The Amazing Maudie Starr , was received so well by the public that it was more financially successful than any Junior Class Play given since 1941. We elected officers as follows, Pete Pearson, Presidentg Anna Neidhardt, vice-presidentg Betty Tomlinson, secretary, and Albert Zuber, treasurer. Our sponsors were Mr. Zimmerman and Miss Moores. As Seniors, we chose Pete Pearson as President, Bill Cleland as vice-president, Betty Tomlinson as secretary, and Albert Zuber as treasurer. Mrs. Culler and Mr. Chaney, our capable advisors, helped us through a very happy, eventful, and memor- able Senior year. We selected maroon robes with white tassels for Commencement and Baccalaureate. S September 2, 1947, marked the last time we would enter H.H.S. as students. As Seniors, when trying to realize that this was our last year of school, we found a tiny fear, or maybe I should say wonder, of what the new phase of life would be like. Many of the remarks that we made, wishing we were out of school, have been changed to, I can't believe that I'm a Senior! or Gee, I'm gonna' hate to graduate . But, thinking still deeper we know that the best part is yet to come and with this thought in mind, we carry on as future citizens of what we hope to keep a peaceful world. -by Betty Tomlinson P g Twenty-Iwo CLASS WILL I, Dorotha Ames, will and bequeath my ability to have fun, to my sister, Delores, providing she doesn't have more than I did. Page Twenty-jour ULASS PRUPIIEUY As I get ready to climb into my bed, I wonder what I and all my classmates will be doing 10 or 15 years from now. Ho-hum, I sure am tired, I think, as I go off to sleep. Hey, what's this? Here I am flying through the air in a funny contraption that resembles an airplane. Why there's another one just passing me and another one! The sky is full of them. I think perhaps I am dreaming, but just then a girl in a long skirt taps me on the shoulder. I find out to my amazement, that she is none other than Anna Neidhardt, the air hostess and that I am personally being conducted all over the world so that I might see all of the places where my classmates are. My trip is being sponsored by Dick Perkins, who is now the President of the United States. His bodyguard, I am told, is none other than that well-known man about town, Bill Cleland. Soon, we are passing over Hicabilly, Utah. I hear that Dortie Ames and Theresa Wonderly own a dude ranch here, and have Gene Brown and Bob Bailey employed as ranch hands. Next, we are flying over Poncho, Wyoming and I see on my list that Ora Miller is the president of that well-known club called the 'fSnooker Fan Club . I also see that jack Brown holds a prominent office in the club, being the treasurer. We fly on again. Soon we are passing over the great navy base of Whamasham, Kansas. Three of my old classmates are in training here. You are right, they are Deloy Preston, Stanley Huntsinger, and Bill Handy. Next, we come to Picadilly, Missouri. I look on my list and see that Alice jones and Juanita Banks are employed at Jack Panico's yo-yo factory. Alice makes the yo- yos and Juanita attaches the strings. We fly on, and the next town is Ping-Pong, Illinois. I see on my list that Pat Schooley has done much in the educational field by building a special school for poor immigrants. Employed at Schooley's School are Plank Hetz, teaching the gym classes, Virginia Nelson, teaching commercial subjects, Dave Miller, teaching chemistry and biology, Doris Winn, teaching dramatics, Willagene Manon, teaching Latin and English, Elinor Kallsen, teaching art, and Albert Zuber, teaching history. We fly over low and just catch a part of Cheer, Cheer for old Ping-Pong I-Iigh'. Next we come to Ouch, Indiana, in which Mr. and Mrs. Pete Pearson own a small chicken farm. When asked why they bought a chicken farm, Betty remarked that they wished to carry on the tradition of The Egg and I . Going on, we are soon flying over good old Hicksville, Ohio. I see that several of my classmates have preferred H to any other place. We see that Seth Scott and Allen Yarger own and operate the Scott-Yarger Dairy. Their milk, I am told, is absolutely the best anywhere since Mervin Volkert, the well-known scientific farm- er, has developed a new germ killer which he has sold to them exclusively to use in their milk. We also see the Red Pastry Shoppe owned entirely by Red Daniels. Then we see that Leon Thiel has started a theater of his own in Hicksville. He has LaRayne Timebrook employed as ticket seller and Dorty Beerbower as ticket taker. After checking Hicksville off my list, we are again on our way and the next stop is none other than New York City. We see here that famous, well-known, social work- er Io Anne Cromwell has started a special organization for women only. Their motto is What Good are Men? We'll Take A Good Horse Any Day. After checking Io off my list, we make a landing at Finnegan, Maine, to refuel before making our round-the-world voyage. We are very surprised tq see Duayne Kennedy and Arnold Phillips employed as mechanics. They refuel our plane, and we proceed across the Atlantic feeling much safer after such superior workmanship on our plane. Pg: YUM!!!-Fl A few hours later we reach Paris, and Whose picture should we find on all the billboards but Pat Wyckoff's. There's one we can see from our airplane. Let,s see now, it reads- Why Koff? Use our new Sasaprillo Extract. -We decide we must try some sometime, as it must be good if Pat is advertising it. Next we are flying over Arabia. We see on our list that Eloise Voght is starting a new revolutionary movement here. She is teaching the Arabs the intoxicating ways and customs of the United States. Soon after, we are flying over No Chow, China. Here we find Gene Gloor and Floyd Kimple owning a small Chinese restaurant, and who should they have selling their chop suey but Ruth Lantz and Lela.h Beverly. We decide we have spent enough time in the Orient, so we start on our long flight back to the United States. We stop at Tapooka, Hawaii to refuel before flying on home. Believe it or not, we see Mary Ann Morton teaching the natives the Hawaiian War Chant, American style. We then continue our long flight home, and reach the United States in a surpris- ingly short time. I see on my list that there is just one more stop. We circle on up to Lemon, Canada, where Imogene Hinsch is training to be a mounted policeman- pardon me, a mounted policewoman. At last I can breathe a sigh of relief, as everyone is safely checked off my list. I then start back for Washington to carry my report to Dick. Oh-what,s happening? The plane is falling! It's crashing! Ouch, my head! What's this? I,ve fallen out of bed! Then it was all a dream after all. Well anyway it was a lot of fun. That year there were fifty-two of us youngsters, and Miss jones and Mr. Ricketts, our advisors, helped us through our first year in junior High. Our class officers were: Otha Hook, President, vice-president, Harold Silvers, and secretary-treasurer, Harriett Cottrell. Our second year in Iunior High was spent under the successful leader- ship of Mr. Rodocker. Gabriel Katons was President, Kexmeth Horn, vice- president, and Johnny Adams, secretary-treasurer. The Freshman year came and found everyone quite happy, for at last we were in high school. This year was spent under the guidance of Mr. Zimmerman. Our class officers were: Bob Mastin, Bob Scott, and Jane Burgoyne acting as President, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer respectively. Our Sophomore year was quite a successful one under the leadership of Mrs. Culler and Mr. Sapp. We chose as our class motto, We're not at the top, but climbingff, our class colors are green a.nd yellow and our flower is the yellow rose. Our class President was Carol Fox, vice- president, Evelyn Gordon, secretary, john Adams, and treasurer, Gabriel Katona, who all served as very good officers. This year, under the guidance of Miss Holtmeyer and Miss Paxton, our Iunior Class is having a wonderful time. We have forty-four in our class with the loss of two members, Bobby Rose and Otha Hook. It is a struggle to earn money for our prom and our senior class trip. We are enjoying many activities and are working hard in the hope that we will be as successful as preceding classes have been. We received our class rings and pins. Our class officers are: President, Kenny Horn, vice- president, Evelyn Gordon, secretary, Ruth Ann Whitman, and treasurer, Io Ann Siebenaler. -by Pat Allen Page Thirty-four I 5 in X yla I I 4 XZ T Tom Blosser, Phillip Timbrook, Douglas Brown, Harold Silvers, Dave Zimmerman, Kenneth Koch Margaret Slaughter, Pat Saltzman, Wanita Potter Junior Hinsch, Larry Schaufelberger, David Timbrook ' Page Thirty-six W , Bottom Row: Shirley Brannon, Louise Miller Lola Evans, Barbara Altman 2nd Row: Carole Durre, Ada Graber 3rd Row: Douglas Evans, Richard Brown, Douglas Brown Bottom Row: Berniece Veter,BThurman Middaugh, Delores Ames Nova Monroe, Jo Ann Wilson, 2nd Row: Carl Beverly, Donnajean Glen Miller, Max Preston B0g6I', Lynn Blalock Page Th My-seven f f NOT LONG NOW' Upon entering the new building, we, being seventh graders, were allowed to elect officers. We elected the following: President, Max Preston, vice-president, Janet Limpertg and secretary-treasurer, David Zimmerman. Mrs. Bungard was our class advisor and helped us plan and have our first party in the gym. Our Student Council representatives were Glen Miller, Nova Monroe, and David Zimmerman. During the eighth grade, we were advised by Mr. Rodocker and elected David Zimmerman as President, Io Ann Wilson as vice-president, and Estell Johnson as secretary-treasurer. Student Council members were Kenneth Koch, David Zimmerman, and Io Ami Wilson. Again we had a party which was greatly enjoyed by all. At last high school days had arrived. We were ably led through our Freshman year by President, Douglas Brown, vice-president, Patricia Saltzmang and secretary- treasurer, Harold Miller. Student Council members elected the second semester were Larry Schaufelberger, Max Preston, and Glen Miller. Our twenty, first-year Latin students enjoyed taking part in Latin Club meetings and receiving club pins. We sponsored a March of Dimes Dance which, in spite of very bad weather, was a great success. This year our President is Glen Miller with Larry Schaufelberger as vice-presi- dent, Estell johnson as secretary, and David Zimmerman as treasurer. New Student Council members have not yet been elected. We are well represented on the football team by Max Preston, Carl Beverly, Lynn, Blalock, Kenneth Koch, and Glen Miller. Team managers are Larry Schaufelberger and Douglas Evans. We have had one class party which was a Weiner roast at the Roadside Park. Later in the evening, we played games on Maxwell's lawn. Nova Monroe was the Sophomore candidate for Homecoming Queen and was later chosen as one of the Queen's attendants. All thirty-eight of us are looking forward to our next two years of high school. iby Carole Durre Page Thirty-:ight Alice Cook, Francis Toth.
