a 9 SENIOR SWAN SONG Twelve years ago a group of youngsters, clad in the characteristic ging- hams and tattered trousers, embarked upon the sea of ciphers and A B Cs in the Hicksville Public School. Previous to this historical event the minds of these sturdy specimens of childhood had been instilled with somewhat hideous stories concerning teach- ers and their habits-those habits including practically everything dreadful. It was only natural that these rather timid 6'students, insistent believers of Mother Goose, should learn to fear the personage behind the desk. With this fear, in time, became coupled a sense of dislike. Throughout eight years this same group of people insisted that teachers should be disliked. Then inevitably high school opened wide its gates, the ginghams and tat- tered trousers cast aside, the group now sixty strong became Freshmen. It was then that a change became apparent. Ideas were broadened, plans were made, school life became really interesting. Above all, the Freshmen changed their ideas concerning the personage behind the desk, that was really the most important thing that happened. Teachers became human, they were not merely machines wielding books and rods. Instead they were those people to whom one could go when lessons were difficult. Wheii some trouble arose that seemed unusually heavy, it was always a teacher who was willing to relieve one of the burden. We, the Senior Class of l93l, were those who wore the ginghams and tat- tered trousersg we were the group who developed such ungrateful ideas con- cerning teachersg we were also those Freshmen who changed those very ideas. After four years of applying our newly acquired attitude toward the teachers we realize what the word teacher really means. Our high school days are soon to become merely pleasant memories and as we go we want every teacher to know how much we really appreciate their patience. their helpfulness and many little kindnesses that we have found so plentiful in the personages be- hind the desk. 16
