gf THE 1925 H1XoN1ANg'9T1v:.e.-Wgyfrgjgggg 4 Gr Calcutta, India, April 3, 1935. IJEAR CLASS or '25: You no doubt will be greatly surprised to hear from me for I have had no communication with the folks back home for nearly five years, but occasionally I hear from Mary. As you probably know I have been touring in foreign lands ever since June, 1925. When one sees the grand old splendor of Venice and the beauty of Athens and mystic Calcutta she really hasn't time to recall bygone days. Tender memories were awakened when by mere chance I found Dr. Mable Saunders carrying on missionary work in the uncivilized parts of India. We cer- tainly had one grand time talking over old times. Mable asked a lot of questions about Hicksville but I could answer none of them. We surely would appreciate any news from The Town Worth While. By the way, we were wondering whether you succeeded in getting the new school building and library that were so badly needed? Do you remember way back when first we started in school and our first reader- how important we felt when we had passed into the second grade. Then in 1917 when the war broke out we organized a Junior Red Cross and The Victory Boys and Girls. How we worked to get our Thrift Stamp Book full! Little Mary gathered nails from her father's driveway and received one cent per nail. Then came that glorious day when the armistice was signed! Remember? The seventh grade was quite notorious in our school career. All of us recall how our teacher, Mr. Roller, favored Margaret Hoffman. Is it possible that she is a kindergarten teacher in California? That was the year we had half day sessions too. Then the next year we had Mrs. Sinn CMiss McCauleyj with that well remembered quotation A word to the wise is sufficient. I think all the girls re- member our Domestic Science Course that year. At least Gwen and I should, because of the pies we baked. I suppose she is Mrs. Forder DeMuth now. None of your pastries, dear. A couple months ago I heard from Mary Hughes, who is now a Latin teacher in Buffalo. She mentioned her Freshman class. Remember when we were Fresh- men and had our trial with Latin and Mr. Day. Just think, there were sixty-two of us who entered Hicksville High. We kept together the next year but gradually lost some when we were Juniors. When I think of that year I think of the Spoon- drift. Edith Hart was Editor-in-Chief and of course we thought we published the best paper ever put out. When I last heard of Edith she owned a beautiful Tea Shop on Fifth Avenue. Remember the auto accident the girls had that year on their way home from Defiance? I guess Eleanor Jordan will never forget that. I wonder what Eleanor is doing since she finished college. The carnival that year was one of the great events. Helen Burlingame and I yelled Lolly-Pops that night until we were hoarse. I heard from Helen a few months ago and she said she was a fashion designer in Paris. Mable just showed me a newspaper from the States, telling about the world record Merle Hootman won with his airplane in a trip around the world. It seems only yesterday that we were busy Seniors trying to put out a good Hixonian along with all our other activities. l26l T05 Sa-QQ aw ...a a weave ,il
