ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING Hlcksville’s cheering section Here come the floats The Queen and her court Homecoming was a huge success. Prepara- tion began the week before with the building of floats. All the classes worked extremely hard to win the trophy, but the senior class float entitled Plow Em Down clearly walked away with it. Virginia Scarola was crowned Homecoming Queen. Choosing the Homecoming Queen was very difficult due to the stiff competition. Pro- vided by Kim Morrison, Maryellen O’Dea, Eileen McQuade and Denise Boyajian. Although the day was hampered by rain, school spirit was still very strong. The day was highlighted by the return of the Marching Com- ets. They played Fame while the Coquettes did what they do best. Even though the Comets lost, the boys played their hearts out and gave Farmingdale a run for their money. 20 ACTIVITIES Water Mrs. Jonason, the push behind us Working to win Plow ’em down. The group holds discussions and debates in school on current topics. In recent years, the club has taken on the appearance of a road company” because of its practice of attending out of school conferences, and the 1980-81 year had cer- tainly been no exception. This year, the club attended the international conferences held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass, and Georgetown University in Maryland; as well as several smaller “congresses” in Oceanside and Bayshore. These trips, as well as the group’s fund raisers all helped to make the year fun, educational, and very successful. Good Story? CLUBS 45 Comet Newspaper: Advisor — Mr. Danna. Ron Millet — Our President hard at worklil The senior class officers had many things to plan for the 80-81 school year. They organized events such as; Senior Celebrity Night, Senior Entertainment Night, Senior T-shirt, Sneaker, Hat, and Dress-Up Days. Their major concern throughout the year, and the high point of our senior year, was the Senior Ball. The Senior class extends a well deserved thanks to the new Sr. class advisor, Mrs. Jona- son, for everything she has done over and above what the title calls for. Mitch placed thirty-third in the state finals, while an outstanding junior Jim Harkins placed thirty-sixth in the County finals. Mario Carrera showed great potential although his season was ended early because of an injury. My name is Ingrid Bergqvist and I’m an exchange student from Sweden. I live in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It is a beautiful city with many interesting things to do. In Sweden, I go to the Gymnasium school which corresponds to high school in the United States. The difference is that my school is voluntary, much harder and instead of eight classes we have fifteen. When I’m free from school, I meet my friends and we have a lot of fun together. I’m here in the United States for a year to live with an American family and to attend school. I like Hicksville High School and am enjoying my visit here in the States. i • -A Hi! My name is Chris Landmark and I am an exchange student from Orbo, Norway. I came to visit the United States to attend high school and visit with life here in America. I am enjoying living in Hicksville and learning about your culture. My school in Norway is very different from the Hicksville High School. It is much smaller, but I find the differences interesting. I enjoyed participating in school activities such as the Hicksville High School Varsity Basketball team. Hi! This is Danny Sharkey sending greetings from Sweden. I came here to Marsta, a suburb of Stockholm, in August 1980, as an exchange student with the American, Scadanavian Student Exchange. I am attending a brand-new gymnasium taking a program with many more aca- demic subjects than in the States. Most subjects are attended only once or twice weekly, so the program varies from day to day. I enjoy hopping the train into Stockholm: a very interesting city, a bit of old and a bit of new and a lot of waterways in between. As an exchange student I look forward to an audience with the King and to attend the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony. When I’m not busy with school work, I take drama lessons or enjoy parties and I recently flew in a small private plane to the northern part of Sweden and did some successful net fishing. I hope to do a lot of skiing, skating and traveling around this part of the world. Hoping to see you all at graduation. FOREIGN RELATIONS 217 r Miss James beat you one on one. Go back 2 spaces. Hopefully, when we look back at all the feelings we have now toward each other and toward Hicksville, We’ll still be there ... almost as though we’d never left. CANDID 269 TIME TO SAY GOODBYE Time for that last, long cry, Looking around and asking why, Realizing it's time to grow up. Time to leave, Not wanting to go, Wanting only to stay a few minutes longer. Stopping for an endless moment in time — Remembering: Seeing ourselves in others. Our first time walking these halls With wide open eyes, taking everything in. Taking that 1st step, that 1st fall Not knowing what to expect, Sometimes getting a little disappointed, A little discouraged; But fighting against it and find everything you set out to find. It was hard, but you did it. We all did it. We found friends, made lives for ourselves, Even passed our courses. Yes, memories; Later on, warming our hearts when we’re lonely. Hurting a little now. But we have to group, We have to leave. We can’t ever go back. Now perhaps we’ll understand Why people say that their youth Was the best time of their life. 270 CLOSING CANDID 271 Oh we will cheer, cheer, cheer for Hicksville High School With hearts and hands now we cheer for thee.
