Queen Diane Reul, Joan Furey, and Bridgene Marco hicksville high school BAND The Marching Comets look great in their new uniforms. I feel pretty!” Do the hokey pokey . The first of many Hicksville touchdowns Homecoming this year was a great success. The Comets made the day by defeating the Bellmore-Kennedy Cougars by a score of 46-6. Amazing teamwork and sportsmanship were displayed by the foot- ball team and the crowd. During the game, the cheerleaders aroused school spirit and the Marching Comets and Coquettes did a fine half- time show to the tune of our favorite Coke and Pepsi commercials. Floats returned this year and all the classes did a wonderful job. However, the Class of 80, led by President Tommy Luongo, tri- umphed once again with the $1.98 Float winning their second Best Float Award. Homecoming once again ended happily and was a fun-filled day for all those involved. VARIETY 79 On December 6, 7, and 8, under the direction of Mr. Crucilla and Susan Bozzi, the Thespian Society Troupe 2125 presented this year's Variety Show — Box Office Special.” Act I consisted of two skits: Meridian 7-1212 and Game. Both of these were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The second act, with the help of musical director, Mr. Charles Arnold and choreographer, Trudy Cohen, brought a touch of Broad- way to the Hicksville Stage. Selections from many popular shows were presented. The numbers ranged from the beautiful song At the Ballet, to the moving Nothing” to the lively finale We Go Together. Many hours of hard work were put into the production of Box Office Special, not only by the cast but also the crews. However, it was well worth the effort. The show was a smashing success! Meta boy cute as can be... HIGH SCHOOL of the YEAR Do you want to sit on Santa's lap? Santa's helpers standing by Debbie handing out the goodies Of course. I'm the Santa you saw at Gertz.” Judy is having a great time. • Bette, put that snowball down. A motley crew of Santa and friends Tim with the special children Mike Smith gets a real big hug This year’s High School of the Year project got off the ground under the leadership of the chairman Bette Hoch- brueckner and Colleen Ober. It consisted of three Santa Clauses and a whole group of Santa’s helpers who brought some holiday cheer to the elementary schools in our district. Equipped with guitars, snacks, and smiles, high school students helped to make holiday parties in almost every Hicksville kindergarten class. They played games and sang songs such as The Inky Dinky Spider’’ and Jingle Bells . Just when everyone thought the fun was over, they were surprised by a guest appearance by Santa. Although the children were a bit skeptical when they saw Tim Myers’ west- ern boots, none of them hesitated to take a turn on his lap. Hours of planning went into High School of the Year. How- ever, the immense appreciation from the classes and their happiness well repaid the students’ efforts. 25 SENIOR CELEBRITY NIGHT These glasses will sure come in handy. Senior Celebrity Night turned out to be an entertaining and enjoyable event. An active display of class spirit, added to the slide presentations of Hicksville and Hicksville sports, was one of the eve ning’s highlights. Engraved trophies were given out along with hysterical gag gifts. The awards were presented by many active members of the Senior Class. Entertain- ment was provided by several talented singers. The audience’s reaction proved that Senior Celebrity Night was a suc- cess. 26 I'd like to thank you all personally. I'm planning to enter the Indmapolis 500.” The nicest couple at Hicksville High The curtain rises for the third annual show! SENIOR PLAY ' Can everyone see the script?” So what's the story, Jackie? Ooh, that feels good!” “Out of the Frying Pan” was presented on February 28th, 29th and March 1st. It was directed by Mr. Crucilla with the aid of student director, Karen Riley. Backstage was managed skillfully by stage man- ager, Mark Clements. The play was a light comedy concerning the plight of struggling actors waiting for their big break. Faces old and new to the stage enhanced a wonderful performance. The entire cast and crew of “Out of the Frying Pan” deserve a big round of applause! 28 Judi memorizing her lines. Why is Sam being picked up? • That looks pretty funny. SENIOR CLASS Senior Class advisor Mr. O’Doherty and officers What are seniors? Are they those wild and crazy guys who will do almost anything to distin- guish their upperclass status at Hicksville High School? The senior at Hicksville has earned his title. Walking around school in costume, running around selling candy, and observing a sneaker dress code are just a few of the countless schemes seniors conjure up for sole participation by the Class of 1980. A typical senior decides his future at the same time he decides his term paper topic which is usually due the next day. He also finds himself with little free time to enjoy his favorite hobbies such as sleep. However, the Hicksville senior is happy. 30 Diane, Reul — Vice President JUNIOR CLASS Junior Class officers hanging out at the “Junior Information Center” uV'J Dec At ' V Pec A ci r Vtft n.eit ■ Mr Vice-President Ricca Yao and President Tom Sullivan Juniors are alive and well in Hicksville. They participated in many school activities. They found the answer to the communication problem by creating the “Junior Information Center. Even seniors were found stopping to read about junior class events. The most noted events of the year were the sale of class rings and the Junior Prom which was held at Villa Victors. This first formal wrap- ped up a most successful year. Bridget Gaitaini — Treasurer SOPHOMORE CLASS Sophomore Class Fund raisers President Chris Stafford and Vice-President Jim Clancy Sophomore Class Officers hard at work Advisor Mrs Koegel and Treasurer Peggy O'Grady The Sophomore Class got off to a wonderful start in high school. This was clearly shown through their efforts during the homecoming festivities. They felt that the Comet-Man float was well done, despite the opinion of the judges. Fund-raising went from the usual candy to the unusual holiday candles and stuffed animals. Sophomore fund-rais- ing events even included a faculty baby picture contest! The highlight of the year was definitely the class trip to the Great Adventure amusement park. Everyone had a terrific time and it was a fantastic way to end an exciting year. 32 SENIOR ENTERTAINMENT NIGHT Eugene, where's your hat? Nina Samowitz and Jane Batterman doing Wild Horses. The third annual Senior Entertainment Night was held on February 8th. The show included many single persons and bands doing both original and popular songs. Eugene Principe, the MC, added some Gong Show humor by wearing a different hat every time he appeared in front of the curtain. The evening was full of fun and good music. 33 STRING OF PEARLS The rhythm of the HHS state band. The trombone section at their best! String of Pearls was held on March 8th. The Hicksville High School Stage Band under the direction of Mr. Abt prepared a full evening of Swing Era music. The gym was transformed into a ballroom complete with a rotating mirrored ball. At intermission, the Pearl Drops sang and were conducted by their personal song arranger, Mr. Golekee. Other exciting events of the evening included various dance contests, the hustle not being among them. The Pearl Drops with their director Mr. William Golekee. COSTUME DAY Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Janet, who is in the beer can?” Guy is the Incredible Hulk. The Class of '80 created a new popular activity. On October 31st, many sen iors masqueraded around the halls and in the gym. They competed for free tickets to the Senior Ball. Their cleverness and origi- nality was unsurpassed as seniors dressed like pump kins, television characters. Playboy bunnies, etc. The day made our halls a most interesting sight. However, it is still unknown who the Conehead was. 35 SENIOR HAT DAY SENIOR HAT DAY was on January 25th or was it January 28th or the 30th ... Whenever it was, this event was the most successful of the dress-up days planned exclusively for the Class of 1980. The halls were filled with everything from cowboy hats to sombreros to top hats. This day surely proved that seniors are wild and crazy guys.” The junior class has a tough act to follow next year. I’m really into Hat Day!” •Howdy y'all! Hicksville's Chorus Line The Thespian Society had a very productive season. The Society is made up of hard working performers and theatrical workers. They put on three great shows: The Variety Show included 2 skits and was highlighted by songs from Grease” and A Chorus Line”. The senior play and the popular musical completed the busy year. All the shows were a big success. Thespians also had many fund raisers from which they went to see Broadway shows and ended their year with the most impor- tant event of all, the Thespian Dinner. The Thespians have a traditional poem named Ithaka which Mr. Crucilla reads before each performance. It has a very special meaning to all who hear it. They also have a motto which they recite before each show. There are no small parts only small actors. Play well your part for there all honor lies. 65 COMPUTER CLUB P The goal of the Computer Club is the explora- tion of computer sicence, logic and commercial applications. Robin 268 IN MEMORIAM “The purpose of the study of Philoso- phy is not to learn what others have taught, but to learn truth. ” Mr. Neil O’Doherty WM uW “She was a gentle woman. ” Miss Marie Saunders 269 Now as I look upon these empty halls, overpowering with the sound of the silence, Echoes of these days Drift into my mind, And stir up so many things I thought I'd never remember. Now the halls are noisy once again But I am not there. We are not there. Gone — only a memory or a passing word. But as I flip through the pages once again, I get lost inside the pictures, the people, the sounds, And my smile replaces the gloom As I remember these times and look on ahead to more. 271 Special Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Rait Jeff Rait Jay Leber Debbie Lupski Judy Straw Nina Samowitz Enza Carone Sue LoCalbo Trudy Cohen Ellen Baldwin Mr. Richard Halowitch Mr. Raymond Rusch Mr. Maynard Munch Mr. Phil St. Pierre Mr. Jerry Schneider COMET'80 STAFF 272
