So, thank you, Steve and Mike, For knowing me. And thank you. For sharing your lives with us all. — Mike Langley Love of Friends We have been friends for many years, Now our eyes are filled with tears. You’ve gone away in the middle of the night. And left us all in terrible fright. You heard the angels as they sung, But why’d you go? You are so young. As you left, we said a little prayer. Telling God this just isn’t fair; He said it happens so be brave and bold. It’s a mystery we will never unfold. Some day we will all reunite. Not dressed in black, but dressed in white. My name is Vivi-Ann Kronstad and I am an exchange student from Oslo, Norway. I came here in August and am staying until June. Here on Long Island I live in Westbury and I am staying with a family named Putman. In Norway, I graduated from compulsory school, which is nine years. When I go back. I'll probably go to Gymnasium (college) which is voluntary. That is another three years. I will probably take the language line. The compulsory school is divided into three stages. The first three years you basically learn how to read, write, and you also learn English in third grade. In the next three years you learn more subjects. The school gets harder and the teachers expect much more from you. You have only one teacher in the first six years. Then in your last three years, you take your second language; either German or French. Most kids decide to take German. Some schools offer you a third language, but there are very few of them. Hicksville High School is a lot bigger than the school I went to in Norway. We were about six hundred kids. I like Hicksville High School because it is different and interesting. I enjoy visiting the United States. Hi! I'm Anmka Nordberg. I’m an exchange student from Sweden. I’m staying with the Diehl family. I came to the United States in August and will return in June this year. I live in the middle of Sweden in a small village called Faker. I live on a farm, but both my parents are teachers, so we can't have so many animals. We only have about thirty sheep. I go to school in a big town called Ostersund. The school is called a gymnasium. The gymnasium is a school that is voluntary. You go there after you're finished with the regular school. In the gymnasium, you choose a line of study. It can be a natural science line, language line, economic line, technical line, etc. There are also lines for different skills. In the gymnasium, I get a salary from the government. It’s about one hundred dollars a year. You don’t have to pay for anything in the school. Everything is free. I go in the natural science line. The line is based on math, physics, and chemistry. After three years in gymnasium, you can go further to a university. Before the gymnasium, you have to go for nine years in a compulsory school. You graduate from that school in an age of sixteen. After this school, you’re free to do what you want. Most people go to the gymnasium. My brother and sister are still in the compulsory school. Hicksville High School is different from my school. The main thing is the subjects. Now I have the same subjects every day, but in Sweden, the schedule changes every day. Therefore, I have much more subjects than here. When you have that many different subjects, you can learn about many things. I have four languages for example. It also means a lot more homework. The High School is much easier than the gymnasium. It’s more like the compulsory school. If you have something you want to know about Sweden, and if you want to be an exchange student, I am willing to help you and answer your questions. You can also talk to June or Susan Diehl. 94 National Honor Society Nancy Alexander Michael Asta Nancy Autolino David Becker Eileen Bienstock James Black David Blaszkowski Lynn Blazejewicz Frank Blesi Laura Brand Stephen Brazill Patricia Brock Janice Brown Sandra Bruder Joseph Calza Angela Campisi Robert Champouillon Thomas Christi Brian Colasuonno Chris Composto Francis Connolly Barbara Crosio Lynn DaSilva Carla D’Aquila Richard Delardi George Della Ratta Antoinetta DePascale Denise DeSimone June Diehl Kevin Dowd Joseph Duminuco Susan Ebbecke Steven Edwards Michael Eisenberg Catherine Engdahl John Esposito Philip Essigman Thomas Farrell Lynn Fava Jeffrey Fein Barbara Feinberg Lori Fleckenstein Mary Galvin Mary Goepfert Eugene Gray Paul Green Meryl Greenblatt Barbara Hart Maria Hartnett Keith Hasbrouck Patricia Hassan Dennis Healy Patricia Healy Werner Heissenhuber Daniel Hellerbach Marjorie Hochman Jean-Marie Hubbs Mary Jianette Alexander Jordan Thomas Kasulka Thomas Kennedy Jacqueline Kenny Leon Kozlowski Elizabeth Kuller Peter Landini Denise Lane Kathleen Lenihan Lynda Lewandowski Robert Lezia Mary Louis Evette Ludman Arduino Marinelli Patricia McAllister Nancy McBrier Steven Meltzer Maria Milito Roger Mola Scott Morck Doris Ann Muller Janice Muller Maureen Murphy Michael Nealon Lynette Newlands James O’Brien Edward Palmese Joanne Pedranghelu Mary-Jo Perry Michael Petrik Neil Piscitelli Gary Putlock Timothy Reed Ave Relling Muriel Riscica Julie Rose Bernadette Rottmann Kenneth Ryan Annette Sardi Cheryl Schaefer James Schulman Ivy Schwartz William Schweinfest John Shannon James Shubert Jayne Sipinick James Sloane Stephen Solaski Cheryl Solomon Cynthia Sosa Jonathan Spindel Norman Stafford Richard Staubitz Robert Steen Cynthia Tiberg Theresa Tiberg John Visconti Diane Warren Jean Waxman Harold Weidenfeld Pater Weinberg Margaret Wilkens Jonathan Wing Fanny Wong Julienne Wong 95 Valedictorian: Teresa Tiberg Salutatorian: Robert A. In the years ahead each of you will find many opportunities to improve your life style. How you use these opportunities will make for a challenging and interesting experience. Hopefully, your days in the high school have been directed towards special goals and objectives. What you have learned here will give you a foundation for the future. Remember your school days with happy memories. You will look back on them often in the years ahead. 104 Mr. John Pitrelli Assistant Principal Mr. Lawrence Olvany Assistant Principal As with all of history, nothing begins with the event, but before that, with tradition or a mem- ory. Traditions begun three years ago are not noticeable now, for they are not even that yet. But they will be, because people will keep them, and people and their traditions will continue together. Your senior year offered you memories as of two seasons — winter and spring: winter because like the year’s final season, your happy days are drawing to a close; and spring, because like the year’s first season, something new was coming — graduation — the end of the beginning. Mr. John Pitrelli My sincerest congratulations to the graduates of 1979. I hope that the experiences that we have all shared will help you to realize your dreams and goals. Under the direction of Mr. Arnold, the Sophomore Girls, Sophomore Mixed, Jr.-Sr. Girls Choruses and Chorale put on two concerts and have certainly made this year one to remember. Hicksville’s Little Drummer Boy 187 Newspaper On your mark, get set. . .! Once again the Comet Newspaper has enjoyed a successful year. This year the newspaper has seen many changes in format and style under the able leadership of the editor. The paper has strived to get all the students of Hicksville High School concerned and involved in the running of the school and the people in it. This year, the Particle’s members, made a sincere effort to provide, for the first time in many years, a “literary digest containing the emotions and aspirations of the students of Hicksville High.” They work hard to give the other students a chance to show their talents. Editor-in chief, David Blaszkowsky, summed up the group's feelings: “The Particle is a true look into the thoughts of the student. In order to accomplish this goal, they held a cake and candy sale and a car wash. But, all their hard working efforts really paid off. The Thespians went to three Bway shows, held a fantastic Thespian dinner at the end of the year and above all, they put together 3 terrific shows that students, parents and faculty alike enjoyed. Variety '78, a huge success, was highlighted by songs from “Chorus Line” and also by songs about “New York”. The Senior Play and the ever-popular musical were both excellent also. The Thespians have a very meaningful poem called “Ithaka” that Mr. Crucilla reads before each performance. It holds much meaning and importance to all thespians. The Society also has a motto which sums up the unanimous opinion of all Thespians: “There are no small parts only small actors. Under the command and supervi- sion of editor-in-chief Dave Hollander, and under the guidance and advice of advisor Mr. Halow itch, all the editors, lost as they were, learned so much and experienced even more. Even between screaming at Dave for pictures and complaining about advancing deadlines, they still had time for fun in the renovated Comet Room. As this year comes to a close, many sighs of relief and also comments of admiration are heard after seeing our creation in print. Yearbook Editors: Advisor Mr. Halowitch, Editor- in-chief Dave Hollander, Asst, editor — Evette Ludman, Girls sports — Lori Fleckenstein, Caro- lyn Edwins, Boys sports — Sue LoGalbo, Copy — Jim Schulman, Art — Lynn DaSilva, Clubs — Robin Rait, Business — Jean Waxman, Activities — Annette Sardi, Faculty — John Menig, Public- ity — Gene Grey, Photography — Gary Guma now, Asst. Joe Simon, Seniors — Meryl Green blatt. The Volunteer Club is composed of dedicated members whose unselfish objective is “to help others less fortunate than themselves. In order to accomplish their goals, the club held cake and candy sales enjoyed by all the students. With the proceeds, a halloween party at St. Christopher's and a Christmas party at the Head Start Program were made possible. This energetic group also paid visits to nursing homes and other institutions. The Volunteer Club’s smiling faces brought happiness to everyone they visited. Library Club I could really use help from a member The Library Club is a group of dedicated students, advised by Mrs. Hruska, who meet once a month to think of new ways to liven up the library. Besides improving the atmosphere, these students learned how to operate the library and how to care for books. One of the highlights of the year was a trip to New York City where they went to dinner and the theatre. Through hard work and endless effort they have made the library “more than just a room full of books.” The Club's motto is “sleep with a friend — bring a book to bed!” Advisor: Mrs. Hruska. Variety '78, a huge success, was highlighted by songs from ‘‘Chorus Line” and also by songs about “New York’'. The Senior Play and the ever-popular musical were both excellent also. The Thespians have a very meaningful poem called “Ithaka that Mr. Crucilla reads before each performance. It holds much meaning and importance to all thespians. The Society also has a motto which sums up the unanimous opinion of all Thespians: “There are no small parts only small actors. Play well your part for there all honor lies. 206 A serious talk before Variety Thespian Society 2125 Mr. Crucilla, Troup Sponsor and Advisor; Mitch Spierer, Pres,; Eric Siegel, V.P.; Joyce Schoenbaum, Sec.; Alan Shepski, Bus. Our Official Photographer 225 Park Avenue South New York, N.Y. 10003 252 DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE OOMQP Look around you. How many people in your class seem to be working toward something? How about you - are you just letting it all happen, and vaguely hoping that things will work out well for you, or are you trying to exercise some control over your life? Think about the happiest, most suc- cessful men and women you know, or have heard about. How many of them do you think got there just waiting to get lucky? Sure, luck has a lot to do with it. But there's a lot of truth in the famous comment: The harder I worked, the luckier I got. You've got to be ready for luck when it happens You can't plan your life step by step. (What a drag it would be, if you could.) But you can decide what you really care about Not what other people say is important, but what you, privately, know is important -for you Don’t talk about it, don't try to hook your friends on it, but keep our eye on it - particularly when you have a decision to make You earn a little extra spending money. Decision: Do you spend it just because it's there-even though there's nothing you really want to spend it on -or do you save it so you’ll be ready when something important comes along? Luck. An opportunity. An idea A chance at what you really care about Look around you again. How many in your class have savings accounts? How many know how easy it is to start one? (You can do it by mail, with as little as Sl- one dollar- and every dollar you save will be worth more, a lot more, when you need it for something you care about) Most young people think that banks are big, rich, cold, stone buildings run by big, rich, stone-cold bankers Wrong. Banks exist to help people-rich people, poor people and people just starting out We're here to help you - with a savings account, a student loan for college, a free checking account, money to buy a house or to improve your home, low cost life insurance, a retirement funa for later on. When you're 18 or 20, these things seem a long way off. But the older you get, the faster they come. And the sooner you start getting ready for them, the luckier you'll be. That's a fact. We make our world by the beauty we see In a skylark's song or a lilac tree, In a butterfly's wing, in the pale moon's rise, And the wonder that lingers in midnight skies. We make our world by the life we lead By the friends we have, by the books we read, By the pity we show in the hour of care, By the loads we lift and the love we share. We make our world by the goals we pursue By the heights we seek and the higher view, By the hopes and dreams that reach the sun, And will to fight, till the heights are won. What is the place in which we dwell, A hut or a palace, a heaven or a hell? We gather and scatter, we take and we give, We make our world — and there we live Good Luck to the Class of 1979 Your Senior Class Officers Fran Panef+a Mary McEvoy Jimmy Haller Mariel Riscica 257 Good Luck Class of 79 258 Le Cercie Frar ais La Societe Honoraire De Frangais Souhaitent a la Classe de '79 Meilleurs Voeux Pour L'Avenir Un Homme Qui Sait Deux Langues en Vaut Deux 259 To the Class of '79, When you leave, take good care, hope you make a lot of nice friends out there. He knew of sulphur and the lovely stench but never knew of shmegma mench Yet even through an hour of sleep he talked away but not a peep And then he said we’ll finish tomorrow and left us all in endless sorrow Don’t worry now the class is fine But it still seems like wasted time Well now he’s gone we wonder why Goodnight E.P. but not goodbye. Elliot Paisner Dedicated teacher Gentleman Colleague Senior Class Advisor A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence ends. He shall not be forgotten. Al Pitrelli
