The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each oth took the hookah out of its mouth, and addresse her in a languid, sleepy voice. “Who ai This is precisely what we are asked all the tim Who are you? “What are you doing with yo “What are your career plans? The a swers, however, are hard to find. 4 alice in wonderland alice in wonderland 5 This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, “I — I hardly know, Sir, just at present — at least I know who I was when I got up this morn- ing, but I must have been changed several times since then.” “What do you mean by that?” said the Caterpillar, sternly. “Explain yourself!” “I ca'n’t explain myself, I’m afraid, Sir,” said Alice, “be- cause I’m not myself, you see. “I don’t see, said the Caterpillar. “I’m afraid I ca’n’t put it more clearly,” Alice replied, very politely, for I ca’n't understand it myself,to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing. You!” said the Caterpillar contemptuously. “Who are you? Once again the question pops up. Once again the ques- tion goes unanswered. Just as Alice changes her size often, so do we change often too. While we are in high school, our studies, friends, teachers, and family all mold our personali- ty. It is indeed possible to be shy as an inexperienced, rule abiding sophomore and then very outgoing as a carefree, know-it-all senior. People do not stagnate; they constantly change. Therefore, we can never exactly define who we are. We must search for our identities constantly. 6 alice in wonderland alice in wonderland 7 The Caterpillar was the first to speak. “What size do you want to be?” it asked. “Oh, I'm not particular as to size,” Alice hastily replied; only one doesn't like changing so often, you know. “I don’t know,” said the Caterpillar. Sometimes we seem lost in our struggle to express ourselves as individuals. No one understands our confusion either. At times we feel like all we amount to is a piece of computer ticker-tape. In these instances, our individuality is suppressed. For homeroom we seem to be just another Delaney card to be marked absent or present. For the guidance deaprtment we seem to be just another transcript to be completed. For the SAT exams we seem to be just another verbal and 8 aiice in wonderland mathematical score to be computed. Sometimes we seem lost in our struggle to (press ourselves as individuals. No one under- ands our confusion either. alice in wonderland 11 '“Come, my head's free at last! said Alice in a tone of de- light, which changed into alarm in another moment, when she found that her shoulders were nowhere to be found.” All she could see, when she looked down, was an immense length of neck, which seemed to rise like a stalk out of a sea of green leaves that lay far below her. “Serpent!” screamed the Pigeon. I’m not a serpent! said Al- ice indignantly. Let me alone! “I’m a-l’m a- “Well! What are you? said the Pigeon. “I can see you’re tryingto invent something!” I- I’m a little girl, said Alice, rather doubtfully, as she re- membered the number of changes she had gone through that day. Like Alice, we all want to re- tain our identities. However, this is not always easy. In this age of computerization and technolo- gy, we have to work harder to keep this identity. And we do precisely that. We express our personalities through our cloth- ing and hobbies as well as our friends and lifestyles. Great!! By doing so, we are coming closer to the answer to the ever-pre- sent question, WHO AM I?” 12 alice in wonderland 14 alice in wonderland It was so long since she had been anything near the right size, that it felt quite strange at first; but she got used to it in a few minutes, and began talking to herself, as usual, “Come, there's half my plan done now! How puzzling all these changes are! I’m never sure what I’m going to be, from one minute to another! However, I’ve got back to my right size: the next thing is, to get into that beauti- ful garden — how is that to be done, I wonder?” And so the story of Alice in Wonderland continues. And we have certainly grown wis- er for it. For we have learned that our identi- ties as individuals are gifts to be treasured forever and ever. I This is your life ... No smoking, please! Hicksville does not have a newspaper tradition. This year, perhaps more than any other, that fact became painfully evi- dent. The COMET couldn’t really be called a newspaper anymore. Mid-year rolled around and there was only one issue to show for it. Some changes had to be made, and they were made. We became geared toward making next year's COMET a good newspa- per. The staff and the organi- zation were changed. Hopeful- ly. next year’s staff will have the journalistic enthusiasm that this year’s lacked. Who knows? You remember austerity and all the trou- ble it caused throughout the school. Well, sports were no exception. Of all sports, per- haps football was hardest hit. The team started the season without really being pre- pared for it. The squad displayed a disap- pointing 1-1-6 record, but exhibited a strong thirst for victory. You gotta listen to the Heavens, and you have to try and understand. That the time it seems to capture.is just a movement of his hand, Try not to hurry, cause it’s not just your worry, So leave it to those, all caught up in time, But I ain’t preachin’, cause I don’t know how to make Fast things, move along slow.Cause ya can’t stop it, and ya can’t make it go, And just cause I say it is, that doesn't mean that it’s so. But I ain’t crazy, nor am I dazed, I just want to find out what’s right and what's wrong. And I ain’t burnin’, it’s just the whole World that keeps on turnin'. Happiness through all the days — The Class of 1975 The production of this yearbook took much effort and time on the part of many people besides the editors themselves. In appreciation for this assistance, the editorial staff of the 1975 COMET YEARBOOK would like to salute the following people and objects that helped make their workload a little less burdensome and a little more enjoyable. To Mr. Phil St. Pierre for his invaluable guidance in the construction of this yearbook. To Mr. Jerry Schneider for being such a wonderful person to work for. To the custodians for their broom. To Ellen Silverman’s grandfather for his secretarial services. To Jim Landy’s little green pillow and to the Comet Room for their versatility. To Rich Gill, Paul Lauricella, and Mike Pakaluk for shooting all of the editors at least six times. To all the cola producers of the world. To Ed Snowden for designing the Comet 75 T-Shirts. To the inventors of 3-C and 3-R forms. To the American Yearbook Company for causing six nervous breakdowns, three mental fatigues and 17 cases of beri-beri. To Dante’s Inferno for its pizza. To the Comet Room clock for never having the right time. To Oedipus Rex for his letters to Mommy. To all those who accidentally gave the editorial staff assistance.
