Instead of the usual comedy, the class of ’56 presented a drama which was adapted from television. The play had a very intriguing plot. It seemed that a group of high school students felt that one of their classmates had been pushed, instead of having accidentally fallen from the school fire escape. They decided to bring the issue into the light by having a trial and prov- ing that the janitor was the murderer. As the play unfolded, however, many other respectable people were shown to be partially responsible for the boy’s death. Mr. Rusch, who directs the senior play each year, has wanted to do a show of this type for some time. His giving up his free afternoons and evenings to work with the seniors made the show a success financially as well as entertainment wise. Besides this, the play carried a message to the audience. It tried to point out that if one shirks his responsibilities he can never tell what may happen because of it. It is indeed an honor to be the first graduating class; in this sense we will always be remembered. Our new school is a superb edifice constructed with purpose and care. As we stop for a moment of reflection we find that we forgot something. Oh yes, we certainly have! What about the old high school That definitely deserves a large space in our book of memories. Most of us spent five wonder- ful years, the best years of our lives in that old school. Don’t you remember the old halls? Oh! how can you forget the old cafeteria where we used to eat our ice cream sandwiches after school? Remember the gym which could be con- verted into a heavenly setting for a prom or a ball? Just as quickly as it could be turned in- to a hall big enough to withstand the cheers of hundreds of girls and boys cheering for their teams at a Sportsnite event or a basketball game. The hands of the great clock in the tower will always remain at 12:30 for that was the end of our school day. We left at 12:30 and watched the Junior High students flock into the building as though a great dam had just burst. Do you remember how small they looked to us? We had to walk down the halls with our heads bowed, not because we were sad, but rather we were afraid to step on one of those small students. No we will never forget the old high school. It is as much a part of our memories as is this wonderful new building that we are now leaving. This year, after having spent many hours of work after school, the staff, under the helpful supervision of Mr. Knerr, has completed a yearbook illustrative of our first year in the new. school. Many problems have arisen concerning photography, art, editing, adver- tisements, and setting up of pages, but such individuals as Ed Osborne, Julie Scalzetti, Julie Gibson, lone Werneburg, Madeline Fox, and Tom Haller have made it possible to overcome all circumstances.Through the efforts of Mrs. Easer of the.English Administration Department, Mrs. Eklund of Business Administration, and Mr. Adams of the Printing Department we of the staff hope the 1956 Comet is as wonderful as our first year in our new school has been. The Comet Newspaper “The Comet” newspaper is one of the prime sources of up-to-date news in Hicksville High School. Our newspaper is a symbol of truth and honesty. The Comet staff this year was composed of industrious workers who contributed many original yet practical ideas. Working on a newspaper like The Comet” is very much the same as working on a big city paper only on a smaller scale. On the staff there were reporters who had to go out and look for material to write into an interesting article. On a big city paper reporters are sent out to spots where news is expected to occur. On The Comet” the same procedure is followed. The only difference is that reporters are sent to clubs and student events to uncover news that is in the process of being made. This high school paper of which we are all so proud, will always remain a part of the school to enlighten and entertain its readers. A society that recognizes the outstanding in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service is the National Honor Society. This is composed of students who not only have maintained a high scholastic average throughout high school, but who have also well-rounded personalities and have contributed to the prestige of the school. This honor befalls many seniors in the senior year, and there are some juniors who are honored in the junior year. Last year ten juniors were elected to the National Honor Society. The emblem of the National Honor Society is a gold key with a torch and the letters S.L.C.S. To be elected to the National Honor Society is a great achievement and much praise is due those who have attained this goal. This year many more seniors and a few juniors were elected. These students are not just bookworms, but diversified individuals who excel not only in school work but also in sports and in other activities. These students, proud wearers of the key, deserve our praise and recognition. 1st Row Judy Petree Julie Gibson Leona Ackerman Mike Lepp Rechard Metzlaar Eric Weller Eugene Hall Robert Quattrone 2nd Row Ruth Olsen Arlene Kotlar Jessica Wetterau Barbara Guljord Lila Sjem Eleanor Morrison Carol Vanderhoven Charlotte Brooks Julie Scalzetti lone Werneburg Carol Conroy 3rd Row Anna Pavlicek Judith LaCagnin Pat Bruun Suzanne Garrett Lucille Aqualina Beverly Blyman Gail Grupp Ruthelln Schlicting Doris Hische Local Honor Society We are justly proud of our many studencs who earned acceptance in the Local Honor Society this year. The club has thirty-five members, and is sponsored by the Y. M. C. A. Proceeds from various activities are donated to charitable organizations. Outstanding projects for youth and governamt are planned. A trip to Albany was an example of one of these projects. Three delegates were sent to the State Hi-Y Congress. The highlight of the year was the Key Club - Hi-Y basketbrawl game. Proceeds went to Y. M. C. A. World Service Fund, amd the Burrwood Home for the Blind. The Future Nurses of America Today nursing offers challenging and far-reaching opportunities in a world increasingly aware that health is one of the greatest assets of an individual or a nation. The profession is growing and its need for leaders challenges the resourcefulness and the ability of the most able and talented young people. The Future Nurses Club of Hicksville High School is young, but it is growing rapidly. The purpose of this club is to provide a setting in which young people who are interested in nursing as a career can meet together to share that interest, to explore the opportunities and requirements in the field, to grow as individuals by working together, and to learn about the community life in which they soon will participate as informed citizens, and possibly as nurses. Our activities have consisted of field trips, panel discussions and service projects. Before the year is over each member will take an official Red Cross First Aid course which will lead to a Certificate in First Aid. The young man or woman who chooses a career in nursing will have economic security, op- portunity for professional advancement, and a large measure of intangible values that come from serving one’s fellow man. The purpose of the F.T.A. is to acquaint young people with the many fine advantages of the teaching profession. Helping teachers during classes and after classes, listening to talks given by prospective teachers, studying in teachers’ colleges and listening to famous educators, at- tending conventions given at local high schools and colleges, taking field trips to state teachers colleges, and many other such activities help a great deal in making a decision on whether or not teaching is the best field for the particular individual; and these are some of the things the F.T.A. does to help young people who are trying to decide on a career. Another is to de- liver material and instruct teachers in the use of different equipment. Each member is instructed in the proper use and care of machines. This cuts down break- age and permits use when needed. Anyone can become a member. All that the club asks is that a member should be inter- ested and will try to perform his jobs faithfully. Six teams meet together in one schooland five problems are given out, one at a time to each student. Ten minutes are allowed to solve each problem and one point is given for each problem solved correctly. At the end of the contest, the team with the most points wins. The pur- pose of the club is to stimulate the dramatic interests in the students of Hicksville High. The meetings are held every Friday after school in the Little Theater. Mrs. Fletcher, as Speech and Dramatics teacher, is our advisor. A variety of programs have been presented covering makeup and stage terms. The high- light of the club’s activities was as assembly program. This program featured fashions and music from 1900 to the modern day. In the future years the club plans to produce several shows. Down in the Valley This year has been marked by many and great innovation, among them have been our new school and an innovation in the student entertainment. The Glee Club, a group with forward ideas, took on the challenge of presenting an operetta which was in vast contrast to those presented in previous years. The title was, Down in the Valley,” by Kurt Weill. The Glee Club tackled this difficult task and did a magnificent job. Those of you who saw the operetta can appreciate its fine value. Under the able direction of Mrs. Fletcher true realism and drama was attained. Under the able guidance of Mr. Pollera and Mr. Beller, the Principal and the chorus gave artistic interpretation to the beautiful music. Last, but not least, the true genius of Mr. Holmes, creator of the magnificent set which also played an important role in the performance, added distinction to the difficult undertaking. Many and great are the laurels of the Glee Club, but Down in the Valley” is by far the greatest. On April 12 and 14, the performance that was presented was the epitome of all the dreams and hopes of the members. The theme was There’s No Busi- ness Like Show Business”. The first act took place in a New York rehearsal studio where the director, played by Gene Nye, and the choreographer, Pegge O’Connor, were holding au- ditions for a future show. Many talented students performed in such acts as dancing, singing and comedy, in this scene. Act II took place in a Broadwsy theater where the versatile Martin Watkins played the role of Master of Ceremonies. Many other students performed very ably to make the Variety Show a success. The scenery and lighting were under the excellent supervision of Mr. Holmes. Outstanding, as usual was the musical direction of Mr. Beller. Much credit is due Mrs. Fletcher who contri- buted so much of her time giving on stage directions and backstage production. The combined efforts of all participants were rewarded by the success of three memor- able evenings. Hicksville H. S. One of the clubs that has been popular ever since its inception is the Chess Club. Our members range from beginners who never played a game in their lives to people playing for years. Each Thursday our group meets for a fascinating hour or two of chess. We are putting our wins and losses on a chart so as to see who is in first, second, and third places. It is hoped that each member will get a chance before the end of the year to play everone else. I think all agree that this is a truly entertaining and instructive club. Balsa Butchers Members of this club are interested in the construction and flying of model airplanes The planes are built at home by the individual members. The group meets on Sunday afternoons to fly their planes. The most popular type of flying is with V controls. Some members, however are interested in Free Flight and Radio Controlled” planes. The last two types present diffi- culcies in flying because of the limited space available. The club usually meets after school on Thursdays in order to plan future flying contracts, and to discuss construction or flying problems of the individual members. Recently the club has become affiliated with the H.A.M.S. Hicksville Airplane Model Society. The boys of the shop have turned out many hours of good work. No matter what kind of a job it is that is brought into the shop it is sure to be done accurately under the expert guidance of Mr. Adams. Being experienced in printing, Mr. Adams knows how to handle the many jobs that are taken in. The printing assignments range from turning out dance tickets, receipt books. Office cards, envelopes. Jobs that have about a ten thousand run are completed in the offset machine. Many of the jobs are being made easier by the new Vari-typer that was purchased this year. The school is fortunate to have such a good print shop in which boys can be trained so that they may take outside jobs. Auto Mechanics Auto Mechanics is one of our new vocational courses in Hicksville High. The students who are taking this course are preparing for industry and service station work. They have learned all the safety features and are progressing very well. They have been taught also the basic and scientific laws which deal with auto mechanics. The shop has been doing such jubs as: trans- mission work, brake repair, engine over haul, carbon and valve jobs, repairing, differential work, and tune ups on cars. Every person who comes in for work on his car always goes out well pleased. ° The shop is small now, but in years to come we are hoping for a bigger shop where we will have more room for more boys to learn the trade. It is planned that the complete course will take three years. Students are given experience in the shop through the construction of jobs similar to those encountered in the actual house construction. A four-room frame house made out of full size material is one of the jobs completed by the carpentry class this year. Such jobs as work benches for the elementary schools, refreshment stand for high school use, a press box for use on the football field bleachers, is typical of the work to be done As a student progresses in the courses the work becomes more difficult and more challenging, ending with instruction in the practice of cabinet making and formica work. This course offers girls a complete study of Beauty Culture. When the two year course is completed the girls will take a state board test for their licenses which will prepare them for future employment. In this course, girls learn how to make professional sculpture curls, how to give professional manicures, style cuts, and finger waves, also the process of hair bleaching and of dying and of permanent waving. The course not only teaches the girls who are taking it, but it helps the other girls in the school. The girls can get their hair dressed and their nails manicured at a very reasonable price, at only the cost of the materials. The girls provide experimental materials and give the student operators the experience which they need. Beauty Culture is a course which provides an exciting and a valuable period of training. This year the Comets came a long way and by finishing third in their division, managed to gain a place for themselves in Nassau’s first county tournament. (In- deed we were all very proud). Our team couldn’t have gone that far if it weren’t for the invaluable coaching of Mr. Jaworski. A winning team has to have the material, and we had plenty of it. Captain Frank Estrada did a fine job, scoring 221 points for the season. (No wonder he was named to Newsdays All-Schol- astic). We will always remember Charlie Horton and John Magee for the fine job they did on the rebounds, also, Bob Zembraski and Tom Sparaco for their speed up and down the court, Pete Ny- gren for his foul shots, as well as Dick Muller, Carl Schulz, Marty Watkins, Ted Le Viness and Ray Boglioli for their all-around aid in leading the Comets to victory. Before league play began, the Comets were undefeated, with a record of 4-0. Fourteen league games saw the Comets lose only to Oyster Bay, Bethpage and Sea Cliff. We entered the tourna- ment with a fine record of 14-5. Playing against Malverne proved to be a tough feat for the Comets, but they gave it their all and managed to come as close as four points. We should all be proud of the fair play and good sportsmanship which our team demonstrated all season. It will surely go down in history as one of the greatest teams H. H. S. has produced. These lively girls raise the high pitch of excitement of crowds at school games to urge on the players to win. Peppy cheers with lively movements, lung power, and feverish enthusiasm help to stimulate the audience and also the boys playing in the game. Cheering at games is not the only job of Cheerleaders though; they are responsible for get- ting the sometimes lagging students out to the games so that they can enjoy being part of a fine school and also do their job in supporting a school activity. The club is composed of thirty-three members, each of whom has both leadership qualities and athletic ability. This year, as in previous years, the club has sponsored two main events during the school season: the Winter Carnival”, and . Girl’s Sports Nite. ” The theme of the Winter Carnival” was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The girls worked hard on their own decorations and refreshments to make the dance one of great success. The captains of both the Orange and the Black teams worked energetically with the members of their teams to make Sports Nite a suc- cess. Everyone present had fun and was well rewarded at the final presentations. The club has a group of hard-working girls, but it would not be what it is without the inval- uable assistance and guidance of Miss Francke. Girls’ Sportsnite The annual climax of the girl’s sports season is ''Sportsnite which took place on Friday, March 23- Many months of planning were used by the Black and Orange Teams before the Sports- nite Show was put on successfully. Each team planned an exceptionally good entrance this year. The Black Team, with Gail Grupp as captain, adapted the four seasons, while the Orange Team, Pat Guigliano as Captain used Show Business as its theme. Both teams were well matched, therefore, there was much ex- citment. The songs and cheers showed the enthusiasm of all the girls present. Various sports such as volley ball, basketball, relay races, and tumbling occured after the entrance. After the first ten events took place, the score was tied, 30 to 30. Unless youattended Sportsnite, you cannot imagine the noise of happy yelling and enthusiastic clapping that filled the gymnasium when each team had won one tug-of-war. In the final round, the Black proved to be the victor, after a persistent struggle. Now is is up to the classes of the future to keep up the good show of sportsmanship that was shown by the Black and Orange teams of 1956. Girls’ Archery Seniors Juniors Sophmores Girls’ Varsity Hockey This year’s hockey team of Hicksville High School has excelled all other years.
