Text from Pages 1 - 40 of the 1943 volume:

Communications Flight Commanders Miss Farley To the Class of 1943: America is looking toward its thousands of high school hoys and girls all over the United States from whom to draw the strength and stamina to carry this tre- mendous world conflict to a successful con elusion. Hicksville High School is proud of its young men and wonen who are now serv- ing in the many branches of the armed forces. They are making the supreme sac- rifice to win the war at a cost of their lives, if necessary. From their brief visits to school while on leave, we learned that their morale is excellent. Many of the Class of '43 will soon be directly involved in the war effort. All will take part in the life of the nation in the destiny fraught years following the war when decisions will be made as to whether the freedom for which we now fight will endure. Alertness, team work, and the will to win will determine the difference between victory and defeat in many of the battles which lie ahead. Just as we need unity in war, we must sustain unity in peace. As Americans, we want to do everything in our power to aid the cause of victory and the cause of peace. Mabel R. Farley Principal Mr. LeBarron To the Class of 1943: There will be many opportunities await' ing you upon graduation, and your services will be in great demand. In seeking these opportunities, I hope you will not overlook the home front with its many important aeeds and responsibilities. One of your greatest problems will be that of adjustment to conditions as you find them. I hope your high school train- ing will be helpful to you in whatever field of service you select. Your high school diploma is still a valuable document and in the post war period will be even more valuable and necessary. The fact that jobs are easily obtained today in no way lessens the need and value for education. Many of your classmates have already been called to serve either at home or on the battle front, and others are awaiting their opportunity. This is highly commend able and truly American as well as typical of the spirit of Hicksville High School. We are proud of you and your achievements. Whatever you do and wherever you serve, our best wishes go with you. May you never forget your Alma Mater, and may Hicksville High be ever a source of inspira- tion to you. E. H. LeBarron Superintendent DEDICATION In all the years since the founding of Hicksville High School, never before have the recent teen-age graduates set aside their own plans to answer their country's call. This year the alumni of 194.3 will be taking their places side by side with the graduates of '41 and 42 who have already entrusted Uncle Sam with their futures. Our seniors are preparing to do their part in lighting for the preservation of democracy and to stabilize the future for the graduates to come. With this thought in mind we, of THE COMET, humbly dedicate this final issue for the school year of 1943 to the boys of the senior class anil also to the teen-age boys of the classes of 1941 and 1942 who ha e entered, or who are about to enter, our country s service. e wish them the best of luck and (iodspeed. niiliiiilJIlilllllilllimUHUiHtillllllilUllINlWHIIIIIIMIIIMIIilUlHIH Squadron Leaders Faculty ABRAMS, MILDRED E. Hicksville’s fortress took off against South Side, and after a grueling battle each team with- drew with a 6-6 deadlock. Port Washington’s agile crewr grabbed a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes of the fray. Hicksville waited until the final minute before it unloaded its bombshell, that be- ing a 30 yard touchdown pass from Van Wickler to Mayer. Arnone went over for the extra point which knotted the final count 7 all. Roslyn was spotted an early 6-0 advantage, but could not hold olT Hicksville’s walloping attack that tore the Hilltoppers’ offense and defense to shreds in the final half. The final tally was Hicksville 18, Roslyn 6. An aftermath of Hicksville’s brilliant season was the naming of Edward Coleman to Newsday’s All-Scholastic Football Team. Coleman played backfield for Hicksville in five games. His pow- erhouse running, fine kicking, and passing were largely responsible for Hicksville’s going through un- defeated. Lynbrook flew into Hicksville unbeaten but was blasted back 25-6. The fortress weathered its big- gest storm at W7estbury. Lighting like Wildcats, the green and gold amazed everyone by holding a 21-0 lead at the intermission. Started ofl by Mayer’s 72 yard touchdown run in the third period, the great ship took flight for a spectacular comeback. Coleman bowled over for two tduchdowns more, and Van Wickler’s three breath-taking con- versions had the fortress on a 21-21 even keel when the contest ended. After that encounter the fortress swung on the last leg of its jour- ney. Mepham was ground to earth 14-0 in a blistering affair while the fortress came in on a 3 point land- ing against Farmingdale. Hicks- ville was victorious 20 to 0 over the Dalers in the game that brought to a close Hicksville’s ban- ner season. Flight Gunners Hicksville High School s basket- ball team won 10 games and lost 6 during the 1942-43 season. The squad scored 556 points for a new H. H. S. team scoring record and finished in second position in the divisional race with 7 wins and 3 losses. Hicksville’s first victory was per- haps her greatest. It was in the season opener that the Orange and Black handed the Chaminade Fly- ers a 41 to 37 overtime setback. Hicksville w'as the only team in Nassau County to defeat the Fly- ers this past season. After a 37-28 win over Mineola. the team went into its worst los- ing slump of the season. Mineola, Chaminade. and St. Dominies all won closely fought triumphs over the Orange and Black. The scores were 28-26. 38-37. and 23-21 res- pectively. Hicksville regained its equlibrium, and in a fast moving Charles Van Wickler scored 234 points in sixteen games for a new H. H. S. scoring record. 140 points in ten league games for another H. H. S. scoring record. He was named on the Varsity of the Nas- sau County All-Scholastic Basket- ball Team, published by Nowaday. fashion handed Roslyn a 42-26 lambasting in the league opener. The arch rival Farmingdale was pounded 58-35, but Westbury ended the winning streak 26-21 for Hicksville’s only loss on her home boards this year. The Orange and Black re- bounded with a 31-27 triumph over Sea Cliff w'hile Oyster Bay, out- classed from the start, dropped a 41-32 decision. Farmingdale was again routed 58-28, but in the game that decided the Eastern Division title Westbury was victorious 18-13 in a blistering defensive duel. Hicksville then went on to better Sea Cliff 35-33 in a thrilling en- counter, and Oyster Bay was slapped by the Orange and Black 36-21. Hicksville avenged her previous loss to St. Dominies by winning a 38-37 victory. Hicksville closed down her cam- paign by losing a 36-34 nip and tuck tussle to Roslyn High.
