Text from Pages 1 - 40 of the 1942 volume:

WAIT—Before You Turn The Page, Read This! We, the Comet Staff, want to explain. Imagine, before you even start, we want to explain! First we want you to realize what a problem we have at hand. We started with the idea in mind to do honor to the branch of service that deserved it most. But we stopped there because we couldn’t find one more important than the othei. As a result, our year hook theme is symbolic of all branches of service, for we feel that perfect co-ordination among them all is necessary for the future of America. In fact, whether we have a future or not depends on it! This is Hiclcsville High School, symbolic of high schools all over America, which are preparing the youth of to- day for that sg near at hand to-morrow. El! 'On To Victory We're Marching' (Hicksville High School Alma Mater) DEDICATION It is with pride and deep concern that we, the Hicksville High School Class of 1942, humbly dedicate this small project, THE COMET Yearbook of 1942, to those men who once represented Hicksville High School as students, and who now represent the United States of America in history’s most important cause. Men of the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Corps, and Coast Guard, we salute you! May the victory you so honorably deserve be yours. May the high ideals lor which you stand be fully realized. Generals-in-Charge To the Class of 1942: America must be strong—strong to meet any threats against her way of life from armed aggressors. When the call came, our Hicksvillc High School men did not back away from the most ghastly war that man ever devised. They realize they have a job on their hands. Never was more demanded of those who accept the challenge. We take an everlasting pride in the determination and courageous conduct of our heroic men who are enrolled in active duty in the armed forces. We know the class of '42 has the devotion and fidelity to love our country more than ever before and will do its utmost to win the war. We know that in its long upward struggle the human race has survived many dark hours, and we are determined, with the help of every man, woman, and child, that it shall win through this one to victory and a bettei world. Miss Mabel R. Farley Principal To the Class of 1942: Yours is the distinction of Being the first class to graduate during the present world conflict. We look to the future with hope and optimism. You will be facing great responsibilities with many opportunities and will be called upon to take your part in the united war effort. J hope you will serve to the best of your ability. We are very proud of our graduates and especially those who are serving their country on land, on the sea, in the air, or wherever they may be. Two of them have already made the supreme sacrifice- It is your responsibility and mine to carry on to victory. Hicksville High can be relied upon to do its part. E. H. LeBarron Superintendent Aides-to-Genercl Faculty IN MEMORIAM Hkksville’s first casualty in the War for Survival was John Haughey, Private First Class, U. S. Army, who was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Our deep grief over his death is mingled with our pride in the brave and unselfish way m which he discharged his duty to his country and his service at a time when both were in peril. John, who was 20 years old, was born in New York City and came to Hicksville with his family in 1926. He graduated from St. Ignatius Parochial School and in 1940 from Hicksville High School. He enlisted in the army in March, 1940, and at the time of the treacherous attack of December was studying nightly at the University of Hawaii preparatory to becoming a flying cadet. He had taken his examinations for a transfer to Randolph Field. It is to the memory of a well-liked and greatly missed student and friend, as well as of a heroic soldier, that we dedicate this page of The Comet of the war year, 1942- Mav he be enshrined in our hearts forever.
