You are giving, generously, one year of your life to your country, and your patri- otic deeds serve as an incentive to inspire us. We, the students, are proud that you, the graduates of Hicksville High School, are in service. We wish to dedicate to you this volume of The Comet. Alumni in Service ATTENTION! Another hoy has Leer drafted into font years service. As a private (freshman) he enters the regiment(high school) and trains for duty. Slightly bewildered, he forms his f.rst impression of the captains (teachers). Ke feels inferior and loses his way about the barracks. He is awed by the Commander in-chief (Miss Farley). He obeys every command a d drills diligently. He is elected to the intelligence staff (honor society) Hedy Lamarr is his favorite actress As a sergeant (sophomore) he Is earning his service stripes (let- ter, etc.) by participating in the army maneuvers. He joins the medical corps (Red Cross) and the fi Id artillery(tootball team). Hi Commander in-chief knows him by sight. Hedy Lamarr is his favorite actress As a second lieutenant (junior ) he bosses the lesser officials. The Commander-in-chief knows him very well. He is familiar with his duties and has high ambitions. He has lost most of his former timidity He visits the guard-house office frequently for advice on his vocation. Hedy Lamarr is his favorite actress. As a lieutenant (senior) all others salute him. He is a member of the military police (hall cops). He leaves on a furlough (Washington trip)for a memorable vacation. The Commander-in-chief has become a helpful friend. He is confident of his fitness and quite attached to the familiar barracks. He is entirely different from the unsure private who entered the regiment, but one thing is consistent about him..... Hedy Lamarr is favorite actress. COMPANY DISMISSED! Com m a nd ers-i n-Ch i ef To the class of 1941: In the present national crisis, it is of the utmost importance that the class of'41 stand united with all lovers of freedom; that you are mindful of the hard work and sacrifices of our forefathers, who gave us our liberties. Many regard our social and spiritual heritage too lightly. Many assume that de- mocracy is handed down intact from one generation to another. Your school desires you to strengthen your devotion to democra- cy, to uphold the high standards of our fore, fathers, and to faithfully carry on that this pre- cious heritage unimpaired, may be enjoyed by posterity. If you value our way of life, its democracy and freedom, you must be ready to sacrifice and endure as did our forefathers. MissMabelR. Farley Principal To the class of 1941: In our America, the public school is one of the greatest of all institutions. To have a system of free independent education is invaluable to a great nation because of the unique service which it rt nders. This is especially significant in times like these. The public school is a symbol of the dream of a free people. It is the desire for justice, the hope of a life that man may live without fear. It is democracy victorious over dictator- ship and it is America triumphant, strong and free. It is yours and mine, a heritage to be passed on, unimpaired, to all good Americans. Mr.E.H.
