CLASS HISTOIQY ln the year l937 a small band of courageous explorers left the familiar surround- ings of home and the tender care of mother to set out upon a daring adventure into the unknown. We entered the first grade with Miss Gladys Croxton to watch over us. Finally we were in the sixth grade and this meant graduation to high school. james Rainwater was Valedictorian and Ella Lee Tucker was Salutatorian. In the seventh grade we had several new students join our class but during our high school years we lost several, mostly girls. When we were Sr. l's, the Beta Club was organized with joyce Dellamus, james Rainwater, Ella Lee Tucker, Lafayette Sanderson and junior Mitchell eligible to join. Many of the boys took part in the sports and joyce DeRamus was on basketball team. Then came the year we had looked forward to for so long. joyce DeRamus and Ella Lee Tucker were elected cheerleaders and joyce Askins was substitute on basket- ball team. Our annual meant long hours of hard work. But we finally completed it with the help of Mrs. jean Bruce, our class sponsor, Through travail and through tribulation we, the class of '49 have at last attained our objective. We have emerged triumphant in the end over home work, term-papers, themes, and examinations These pitfalls for the unwary have not caught us, though escapes from such dangers have been many and narrow. CLASS DIQDDHECY . For a few minutes let us look into the future and see what it holds for the l5 members of the Hicks Memorial School senior class of l949. Ella Lee Tucker holds a fine job. She is private secretary for james Rainwater, who is president of the County Farm Bureau. Lafayette Sanderson made good, too. He took Eddie Arnold's place on the radio and is called the Alabama Plowboy. Billie jones, oh, if you want to hear him just tune in Radio Station ATUC, Autauga- ville. Tune in at 7:30 and .hear Billie Durbin, the famous comedian, too. Thomas Sanderson is now Mr. B. R. Tucker's partner in operating a large cattle farm. jimmie Ingram has taken Mauri Rose's place in Autaugaville Automobile racing and was named the Acrobat of l955. Donald Ealum who has been in the army for six years has now reached the rank of P.F.C. i joyce Askins and Mac Roy Babston now own and operate Askins' Beauty Shop in Autaugaville. They are doing fine. Richard Ptomey is now a movie actor and his latest picture is Woman Trouble, l think he is really having it, too. junior Mitchell and Herbert Cooper are now partners in the sawmill busin They own three large mills scattered over Autauga County. Douglas Smedley has taken Cecil's job as forest ranger and he is the only Senior of '49 that owns a helicopter. Marvin johnson now owns a tourist camp at Statesville. He hasn't made a very good success and l don't know why. If you are ever down that way drop in and spend the night.
