We entered the first grade with Miss Gladys Croxton to watch over us. Finally we were in the sixth grade and this meant graduation to high school. james Rainwater was Valedictorian and Ella Lee Tucker was Salutatorian. In the seventh grade we had several new students join our class but during our high school years we lost several, mostly girls. When we were Sr. l's, the Beta Club was organized with joyce Dellamus, james Rainwater, Ella Lee Tucker, Lafayette Sanderson and junior Mitchell eligible to join. Many of the boys took part in the sports and joyce DeRamus was on basketball team. Then came the year we had looked forward to for so long. joyce DeRamus and Ella Lee Tucker were elected cheerleaders and joyce Askins was substitute on basket- ball team. Our annual meant long hours of hard work. But we finally completed it with the help of Mrs. jean Bruce, our class sponsor, Through travail and through tribulation we, the class of '49 have at last attained our objective. We have emerged triumphant in the end over home work, term-papers, themes, and examinations These pitfalls for the unwary have not caught us, though escapes from such dangers have been many and narrow. ELLA LEE TUCKER Historian CLASS DIQDDHECY . For a few minutes let us look into the future and see what it holds for the l5 members of the Hicks Memorial School senior class of l949. Ella Lee Tucker holds a fine job. She is private secretary for james Rainwater, who is president of the County Farm Bureau. Lafayette Sanderson made good, too. He took Eddie Arnold's place on the radio and is called the Alabama Plowboy. Billie jones, oh, if you want to hear him just tune in Radio Station ATUC, Autauga- ville. Tune in at 7:30 and .hear Billie Durbin, the famous comedian, too. Thomas Sanderson is now Mr. B. R. Tucker's partner in operating a large cattle farm. jimmie Ingram has taken Mauri Rose's place in Autaugaville Automobile racing and was named the Acrobat of l955. Donald Ealum who has been in the army for six years has now reached the rank of P.F.C. i joyce Askins and Mac Roy Babston now own and operate Askins' Beauty Shop in Autaugaville. They are doing fine. Richard Ptomey is now a movie actor and his latest picture is Woman Trouble, l think he is really having it, too. junior Mitchell and Herbert Cooper are now partners in the sawmill busin They own three large mills scattered over Autauga County. Douglas Smedley has taken Cecil's job as forest ranger and he is the only Senior of '49 that owns a helicopter. Marvin johnson now owns a tourist camp at Statesville. He hasn't made a very good success and l don't know why. If you are ever down that way drop in and spend the night. Cabins and meals are fifty-cents a day and night. joyce DeRamus who finished college at judson is now a Physical Education teacher there. rviARviN joHNsoN LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the members of the Senior Class of Hicks Memorial High School, County of Autauga, State of Alabama, in the year of our Lord I949, being of sound mind, body and what have you, and having no hardfeelings toward the faculty, do hereby make and declare this to be our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, To Mr. Harden, we bestow the responsibility of supervising H.M.S. without our inspiring and able assistance. To the junior Class, we bequeath our outstanding dignity, our good behavior and quiet manners and all the supposed privileges of the Senior Class. Finally, but not least, we give to them our seats of honor in Mrs, Bruce's room. I, joyce Askins, leave my ability to primp in class to Kate Houston. I I, Herbert Cooper, bequeath to Marvin Sheridan, my insane bashfulness which keeps me out of trouble as long as I am not in it. I, joyce DeRamus, bequeath unto Polly Durbin my ability to leave boys alone. I, Billy Durbin, don't leave nothin' to nobody. fStingy, ain't l?l I, Donald Ealum, leave my ability to tell jokes in class to Larry Dobbins. I, jimmie Ingram, bequeath my driving ability to Bobby jones. I, Marvin johnson, will my Blab mouth to Edgar Hester. I, Billy jones, leave my wit to Franklin Carter. I, junior Mitchell, leave my passion for Ella Lee Tucker to jerry Simpson. I, Richard Ptomey, leave my way with women to Cecil Smith. I, james Rainwater, being of sound mind and a physical wreck do hereby leave to james Pearson, being of unsound mind and a physical wreck, my ability to say the wrong thing at the right time. I, Lafayette Sanderson, will my slim, willowy physique to james Blake. I, Thomas Sanderson, leave my ability to go with one certain girl to Alvin Stewart. I, Douglas Smedley, leave my hidden talents to Mac Roy Babston, who probably has a few secrets himself. I, Ella Lee Tucker, leave my job in the office to anyone who makes mistakes in jUNIOR MITCHELL Class Lawyer typing. N i' P V ' ' 1-t ' 11: cuss some Now is the season when we must leave old Hicksg Soon we'lI be out on our very own After we have gone we'll e'er remember you,- ' l-low the faculty stood by us to the end. Now to the juniors we must leave behind We hope you'Il finda life of joy divine We'll e'er remember, O, those golden halls ln which we have trod for many long happy years. CLASS DUEM Our School days are ending at last And the outlook of our future's ahead, But sure as the night makes its cast There will be no need for us to dread. lust let nature have its way ln what ever we may choose And do our best from day to day And God will never let us lose. As we take a stroll through life Or wherever we should go A None of us should be in strife As all the world should know. But to try to please one and all T This precious earth and the way it stands, And our love for it shall never fall As we travel through this land. The juniors will fill our places And do their very best To fill our vacant spaces The ones we laid to rest. And to study, honest and true, Every hour from day to day, And do what God would have them to do ln abiding and truthful way. IOYCE DeRAMUS BlLLlE IONES x 'l' i 1-fi, 1 , , it - W 1- 1' a V o ' 0 fo? What do you want to learn now? the woman was asked. I wanta learn to write my name, she replied. But you learned that last year, the teacher replied. Shore, she agreed, but since then l've got married. Mac Roy: Darling, sometimes you're masculine and at other times so effeminate. I-low is that? loyce: l suppose it's hereditary. Half my ancestors were males and the other half were females. An irate baseball enthusiast, who had watched his home team go down in defeat, stopped the umpire as he was leaving the field. Wher'-s your dog? he commanded. Dog?':,ejaculated the umpire. I have no dog. Well, said the grouchy one, you're the first blind man I ever saw who didn't have a dog. Douglas: I-ley, look, the barometer's falling! Billy jones: Tsk-tsk-probably wasn't nailed up right. lvlr. Smith: What do you mean by bringing my daughter home at this hour of the morning? Lafayette: Because she's gotta be at school by eight, A Scotchman was leaving on a fortnight's business trip and called back as he left home: Goodbye, all, and Katherine, dinna forget to mak' Ieetle Donald tak' his glasses off when he's na looking at naethingf' Richard is so distressed, he got a pair of pink pajamas and a military hair brush for Christmas and now he doesn't know whether to go to West Point or Harvard. .ffff hig5,F,3:L Jgvxqv M - ., ' -'-ff. - ' ' - ,f QA - 1 '- ' -F' . 3.
