Also to be commended are the faculty, the parents, and the students who worked to make the academic program and the extracurricular activities worthy of being recorded. I am confident that the faculty and the citizens of the communities supporting the school will continue to work for a school which will help our students develop compe- tencies that enable them to shape their lives for a successful future. I am also confident that each individual associated with our school shares my goals for a school noted for its academic strength, outstanding extracurricular activities, and superior physical plant. I feel it a privilege to work with people concerned for the needs and rights of children. James A. Spurgeon School Board Member Vernon Parish School Board 6 Superintendent’s Message The events you have recorded in this yearbook are an indication of your pride in your school, your accomplishments, and in each other. Everyday events pictured here will become treasured moments as the years pass. I hope that you will look back on the past year as a milestone in your education ... a year in which you flourished emotionally and educationally. You have my best wishes for a challenging and rewarding future. C. Creighton Owen, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools 7 Principal’s Message As Principal of Hicks High School I would like to take this opportunity to commend the students and faculty for their outstanding work this year. The Annual records events of scholastic and extracurricular activities. At first I was scared going to a strange place and not knowing anyone, but everyone was so friendly I was put at ease. 1 would especially like to thank Billy, Pat, Letitia, and Lisa Akins for taking me in for the first Semester not knowing who I was or what 1 was like. Their love, understanding, and generosity was most appreciated. 1 also want to thank everyone who made my stay in Louisiana most enjoyable. I learned a great deal not only in my studies but also in the course of daily living. Now that I'm home, 1 come to realize how much 1 had come to know everyone, and how much I miss you all. I will remember my stay in Louisiana always. Jodi Thyssen Jodi Thyssen Jim. Sarah. Dean, and Mr. and Mrs. Schiedermeyer Dean was an exchange student from Wisconsin. He came to school here in the 1978-79 school year. He and his family came back for a visit and to take back Ross Monk. Ross lived and went to school in Wisconsin the last six weeks of the 1978-79 school year. 32 ELEMENTARY To me, every hour of light and dark is a miracle. Every cubic inch of space is a miracle. The part of school that Janet enjoyed best was playing basketball. This seemed to open the door to other activities that Janet enjoyed. She was a very co-operative person, had great school spirit and seemed to enjoy every- one. What she plans to do after school is to go to work. Janet would like to work as a bank cashier. Mr. Hicks High Keith Merchant Keith was also voted Mr. Hicks High by the high school student body. This talented young man plans to attend Northwestern and major in Music. It’s no wonder why, he received many awards in music throughout his high school training. Keith enjoys other activities such as basketball, baseball, swim- ming and hunting. 51 Beauties and Beaus Ross Monk (unior Linda LaCaze Junior Beauties and Beaus Shonda Dousay Sophomore Troy Williams Freshman Mike Smith Sophomore Mary Kirkpatrick Freshman 53 Senior Favorites Most Likely to Succeed Daniel Warwick. The Pirates placed second in a six team district, beat Stuart Prep in bi-district play, and lost a close 2-1 decision to Meaux in the quarterfinal round of play. Hard work, unselfishness, dedication, and team play enabled the young team to accomplish the goals of winning that each player had set forth before the season had started. 84 activities It is true, I never assisted the sun materially in its rising; but, doubt not, it was of the last importance only to be present at it.
