THE 1978 PIRATE VOLUME XXIII 1978 “Pirate” Staff Message As we step from one stage of our lives into the next, we leave behind many precious moments that were ours for only a short time. We have tried to make this book special because we feel it should reflect you. We, the 1978 Pirate Staff, have endeav- ored to show with words and pictures the scenes that are found in each of our hearts. We hope that you will look through these pages and treasure each one of them as a Hicks High School Pirate. Dean Ingalls Sports Editor 2 Karen Adams Features Editor Cheryl Dow den Activities Editor Dedication The yearbook staff believes that the dedication of this yearbook should go to a person who possesses leadership, willingness to help others, sportsmanship, and devotion to the school. Because he has shown all of these qualities, we proudly dedicate the 1978 Pirate to Ronald Roy. 4 Principal’s Message In the years to come you will turn the pages of this yearbook and you will remember the best times of your life. You will remember the challenges of the past and realize how they had a bearing on your future. I would like to commend the annual staff for the outstanding work which they have done on the 1978 yearbook. This book will always be a landmark in your life and will continue to bring back pleasant memories. I wish to extend my personal thanks and wish the best to the students of Hicks High School. School Board Member’s Message Today, while you are a student at Hicks High School, there are numerous things taking place in this world, which in the last few decades, has become much smaller by modern means of transportation and communica tion, so as to seem unreal. Yet, all these problems will affect your future life style, how you will live, where you will work, what occupation you will pursue, and where you will establish your home. It behooves each of you to gain as much knowledge about all these present world problems, so that you can better cope when you leave to either enter college or the world of work. Modern technology can and will, unlock the answer to many of these problems that face us today and you want to be a part of it. Again, let me challenge each of you to avail yourself of all the facilities furnished to better equip you for the many difficult tasks that lie ahead. At the same time, I challenge you to keep faith in God, Country and your fellow man, without which one cannot become a fully developed, useful, and dedicated citizen. I am very pleased to commend the staff, teachers and sponsors for this fine yearbook. May it serve as a constant reminder to each student that what is pictorially presented here, represents some of the finest years of your life and that it be a future reference of the many wonderful friendships and good times enjoyed at Hicks High School. 6 C . dfe IQ-HTOP OWBAJ5 Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools 7 Superintendent’s Message It is with great pleasure that I commend you upon the production of an excellent yearbook such as this. The hard work and long hours you have expended are much in evidence as one leafs through this complete project — a treasured record of this year's life. In years to come, you will prize this book to an even greater degree, as it is a treasure house of the recorded events of this school year which can be shared by all who attended. Hopefully, the past year has been one of educational growth and has challenged you to develop to the fullest possible degree your talents. It is by achieving to your utmost that you can best prepare to meet the demands you will face as a citizen of tomorrow. I extend to each of you my very best wishes for many years of good health and happiness. All n 3 VI Hicks High School Faculty Dale Hardwick, Principal Ronald Roy, Asst.
