THE 1971 PIRATE HICKS HIGH SCHOOL HICKS, LOUISIANA VOL. XV Editor Assistant Editor Business Manager SANDRA SPURGEON JEANETTE MELDER ELAINE GOLEMON Foreword Involvement and wheels - two important words in today's society - are not new to the Hicks High School students. Since the beginning of the school, and even before the day of the student-owned wheels, ” the students and the faculty have been noted for their involvement in academic, extracurricular, and community-related activities. With the reputation of the students in mind, we yearbook staff members decided the 1971 Pirate should be a record of H. H. S. student involvement. Since it is impos- sible to show each activity and all students involved in any one activity, we have selected pictures which we think are representative of activities and student involve- ment. We sincerely hope that the activities we have chosen for the 1971 Pirate are among the activities our fellow students have chosen to remember as happy memo- ries of 1971. SANDRA SPURGEON, Editor Table of Contents We, the yearbook staff, believe that to dedicate this yearbook to this person reflects not only the student's feelings, but the feelings of the community. We believe that the qualities that have been shown by this person has encouraged all the students to strive to attain high goals in life. Because of the unfailing loyalty, and the dedication that has been shown in helping us in our work, and in school related projects, this individual has taught us to meet all the challenges of life, we the Pirate Staff of 1971, dedicate this yearbook to Miss Kathleen Little. From the Superintendent of Vernon Parish Schools Congratulations to the staff, sponsors and the many individuals for their contributions and efforts involved in compiling and editing this at- tractive yearbook. This annual reveals much more than a pictorial record of school ac- tivities; it records progress and the deep meaning that school associations and friendships have in the lives of our young people. As you review the many accomplishments in this publication, may you find inspiration to help you continue worthwhile activities. Best wishes! Sincerely, CURTIS BRADSHAW, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools Vernon Parish School Board RUSSELL JACKSON Assistant Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools CREIGHTON OWEN Supervisor of Instruction Vernon Parish Schools SEATED: Mrs. J. When each of you students go from Hicks High School to take your place in the adult world, 1 trust that your activities will creditably reflect the worthwhile precepts which your school has undertaken to teach. I wish to compliment the staff and sponsor for their contributions involved in com- piling and editing this yearbook. I also wish to extend the warmest regards to each student enrolled. I hope that this yearbook may for many years serve to verify by print and pictures the many experiences that you have enjoyed during this school term and to help you find inspiration to continue such worthwhile activities. Sincerely, MRS. J. C. TROTTI School Board Member, Ward Eight From the Principal W. L. BENNETT, JR. Principal As we view the pages of this annual, we ate much aware of many innovations which have been made in our school. We see for the first time a public kindergarten, additional audio-visual equipment, and improved techniques in teaching procedures and student activi- ties. These changes indicate an intense effort on the part of faculty and students to meet the requirements of a changing and complex society. Because of this changing and complex world, much emphasis is placed by the administration on the development of the individual to the maximum of his potential. As your principal, I would like to challenge each student to strive to develop himself as much as possible during the ensuing years in high school, while at the same time congratu- late the parents who provide these opportunities. I want to commend the students and faculty for your excellent work in preparation of this annual. Sincerely, W. L. BENNETT, JR. Principal Faculty BETTY BOOKTER First Grade J. J.
