THE 1970 PIRATE HICKS HIGH SCHOOL HICKS, LOUISIANA Vol. XIV Editor ELAINE MERCHANT Assistant Editor SANDRA POE Business Manager GLENDA MAYO Foreword “It takes a heap o’ livin’ to make a home.” - Edgar A. Guest As we read the many reviews of progress made in the world in this last decade, we began to review the progress made in our immediate world - the Hicks High School. We soon realized that it was impossible for us to record the total heap o’ people and activities responsible for the progress made from one small brick building located on a lonely hill at Hicks, Louisiana, less than two decades ago into four brick buildings filled with students and activities. Next, we realized that even one decade of people was one heap o’ people and activities to record; therefore, we decided it would be easy to record the activities of the 1969-1970 school ses- sion. Alas, as all yearbook staffs in the past have discovered, we too have discovered it is impossible to record each contribution made by our school patrons, administration, faculty, and students. Since we have learned that it takes a heap o’ people and a heap o’ activities to make a school, now we only can hope that the pictures and com- ments made in this book will serve as a reminder of people and activities that made the 1969-1970 school session of the Hicks High School a special year for each of you. Elaine Merchant Editor ATHLETICS ORGANIZATIONS Table of Contents FAVORITES s' CLASSES FLORIST ADVERTISERS ACTIVITIES Dedication The yearbook staff thinks that the selection of the person to whom to dedicate the yearbook must reflect the opinion of the entire school. The staff also thinks that the person selected must possess the moral qualities stressed in Hicks High School as the ideal qualities for each student to attain. Because he has gained the respect and love of each faculty member and student; because he has contributed generously of his off-duty time to help create a better school; and because he has cheerfully and continuously shown us the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and great ability that we all desire to attain, we, the Pirate staff of 1970, dedicate this book to COACH DALE HARD- WICK. From the Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools May the pictorial scenes in this attractive publication help you remember with enjoyment your school days, the pleasant associations with classmates and teachers, and inspire you to continue worthwhile activities. My wish is that your future will be so planned and lived that the important experiences of your life will bring you both honor and happiness. I congratulate the staff and sponsors for publishing this informative yearbook which reflects so many school accomplishments. You have displayed a combination of interested people working to- gether. Interested parents, teachers, and students working to- gether in a free atomosphere will develop citizens who will be able to arrive at decisions wisely and to enjoy the blessings of the American way of life. I want to commend the annual staff, the sponsor, and each person who contributed in any way to this unique yearbook. My sincere wishes are for continued success in the years ahead. MRS. J. C. TROTTI School Board Member, Ward 8 Letter From Mr. Bennett w. L BENNETT. JR. Principal Much progress has been made during the sixties; and as we move into the new decade, let us take with us those good things which will be of assistance us in the seventies. In the past decade, we have had four presi- dents of the United States, we luve put men on the moon, our nation has been engaged in a war, and our nation has grown to over 200,000000 people. I know of no other period in American history in which people have had to face the problems as did the people of the sixties in this - the greatest nation on earth. With these thoughts in mind, I, as your principal, want to'take this opportunity to challenge you, the stu- dents of Hicks High School, to strive toward a higher degree of excellence in the seventies and to always insist on the best - the best education, the best government, and the highest standard of living for yourself and your family. The future of our community, our state, and our nation is in your hands. I want to compliment the sponsor and the staff on the fine job of assembling this fine annual, the 1970 edition of the Pirate.
