Principal's Message Our school annual, the Pirate , is a vivid picture of our school and the work of our students here at Hicks, It is an instrument which relates the varied program and activities which have occurred during this school year. It pro- jects the growth of our school population and the development of additional facilities on our campus. It denotes student leadership by those who spent many hours in its preparation. It indicates devotion and dedication by the sponsor. In the years ahead as we reflect back on our days here at Hicks, as stu- dents, faculty, and other employees, this annual should serve as an inspiration to encourage us to strive to attain higher standards, to set higher goals and to not be satisfied with anything less than the best we can achieve in life. 5 . Principal

To the memory of John Daniel Dayton is this book dedicated Mr. Daniel Dayton, a native of Louana, Arkansas, graduated from the Magnolia High School, Magnolia, Arkansas in 1952. He then entered the United States Navy and served in this branch of the service for four years. After completing this tour of duty he resumed work on his formal educa- tion and graduated from Southwestern University, Lafayette, Louisiana. He taught industrial arts at Hicks High School from September 1964 to Sep- tember 1966. Mr. Dayton was married to the former Joyce Bailey in 1952. To this marriage was born Joy and Dana. His devotion to his family and his love for his fellowman singled him out as one who at all times and everywhere gave his strength to the weak, his substance to the poor, his sympathy to the suffering, and his heart to God. He shall long be remembered for his sincere interest in the youth of our parish and for his many unselfish contributions for the advancement of our school and community. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime. And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. ....Longfellow

Friends: I should like to take this opportunity to commend the faculty and students of Hicks High School who have given freely of their time and efforts to make it possible for us to enjoy the many activities which are presented in this yearbook. It records people and events not merely in terms of the observable in the classroom and at rec- reation, but it also reveals much of the deeper meaning that high school graduation and training can have in the lives of boys and girls. The warmhearted feeling and fine professional spirit demonstrated by teachers and students in your school is an inspiration to all of us. 1 realize, too, that this remarkable achievement cannot be accomplished without co-operation and leadership ability. It is with great satisfaction that I am able to speak of you as my friends , and with deep sincerity, wish you continued success in your every endeavor. Sincerely, Curtis Bradshaw, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools Superintendent of Vernon Parish Schools
