Foreword Pirates of the sixteenth century searched the high seas for treasures of gold and silver; the Pirates of Hicks High School search the channels of education for treasures of knowledge and wisdom. Just as books and legends have record- ed the early pirates’ acquisition of wealth, this book attempts to record the Hicks Pirates’ acquisition of scholarship, sports- manship, leadership, and citizenship through academic and extracurricular ac- tivities.

To the memory of John Daniel Dayton is this book dedicated Mr. Daniel Dayton, a native of Louana, Arkansas, graduated from the Magnolia High School, Magnolia, Arkansas in 1952. He then entered the United States Navy and served in this branch of the service for four years. After completing this tour of duty he resumed work on his formal educa- tion and graduated from Southwestern University, Lafayette, Louisiana. He taught industrial arts at Hicks High School from September 1964 to Sep- tember 1966. Mr. Dayton was married to the former Joyce Bailey in 1952. To this marriage was born Joy and Dana. His devotion to his family and his love for his fellowman singled him out as one who at all times and everywhere gave his strength to the weak, his substance to the poor, his sympathy to the suffering, and his heart to God. He shall long be remembered for his sincere interest in the youth of our parish and for his many unselfish contributions for the advancement of our school and community. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime. And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. ....Longfellow
