THE PIRATE By The Pirate Staff of 1966 HICKS HIGH SCHOOL Hicks, La. Volume 10 Foreword The Pirate staff presents this annual with hope that its contents hold as special a meaning in later years as it does today to the students of Hicks High School. The Pirate staff will treasure this book not only as a memory book of fun and friends, but also as a memento of the opportunity given us to accept responsibility. Principal The students of Hicks High School are proud to have Mr. W. L. Bennett, Jr. as principal. His knowledge of the needs of education and his guidance in the growth of the school are acknowledged and appreciated by each student and local citizen. Before coming to H. H. S. as principal, Mr. Bennett taught general science and biology and coached basketball in the Leesville High School. He assisted with the football and track teams until 1962. His first year as a teacher was at the Hornbeck High School, 1951-52. Mr. Bennett, an active member of the First Baptist Church, Leesville; Jr. Chamber of Commerce; Civitan Club; Vernon Parish Teachers Assoc.; and LTA, has served as VPTA president, Vernon Parish delegate to L.T.A. and a member of the State Teacher Welfare Committee, LTA and of the State Public Relations Committee, LTA. At present he is Chairman, Vernon District of the Boy Scouts of America; Maintenance Officer, 225th Engr. Grp., La. National Guard; and Director, Vernon Parish Sheriffs Baseball Association. He works each year with the Lions Club on the annual Basketball Jam- boree. Mr. Bennett obtained his BS degree from Louisiana College, ME degree from Stephen F. Austin State College and has done post graduate work at Southern Methodist University and University of Southwest Louisiana. When Mr. Bennett became principal, the Hicks High School gained two additional supporters in Mrs. Bennett and Leland. Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett and Leland are indeed an asset to the school and community. Mr. Bradshaw Mr. Curtis Bradshaw, Superintendent of Vernon Parish Schools, is well acquainted with with the schools of Vernon Parish as he re- ceived his elementary and secondary educa- tion at Anacoco and served as principal or as athletic director in three of Vernon Parish schools - Whiskachitta Grammar School, Pic- kering High School and Anacoco High School. When selected as principal at Anacoco, Mr. Bradshaw had the distinction of being the youngest principal in Louisiana. Mr. Bradshaw’s service and leadership in education began in high school; he was president of his graduating class. Since re- ceiving an AB degree from Louisiana State Normal College and a ME degree from Louisi- ana State University, Mr. Bradshaw has served as president for the Vernon Parish Teachers’ Assoc.; Vernon Parish Principals’ Assoc.; Vernon Parish Athletic Organization; Northwest Administra- tors Club and Northwestern High School Rally Assoc. In addition to these offices, he served on various educational committees: Teachers' State Ten- ure Committee; Teachers’ State Welfare Committee; LTA Legislative Committee. In 1956, Mr. Brad- shaw served on the Twenty-Five Superintendents’ State Committee to study small schools and trans- portation. In 1965, as a result of his excellent service and work on various committees, Mr. Bradshaw was appointed by State Superintendent of Education William J. Dodd to serve as a member of the One- Hundred-Man Curriculum Study Committee in the State. Dedicated as he is to education, Mr. Bradshaw has not neglected his responsibilities to his family, church and civic organizations. He is a Shriner and a member of the Baptist Church, Leesville-Ver- non Parish Chamber of Commerce and many fraternal and social organizations. He has served as mas- ter of the Orange Masonic Lodge, master of Anacoco Lodge No 147 and Eighth District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of La. When one becomes aware of Mr. Bradshaw's impressive service in education, one understands the rapid progress the Vernon Parish schools have made in cuniculum, buildings and extracurricular ac- tivities. All high schools in Vernon Parish have been accredited by the Southern Association of Sec- ondary Schools and Colleges since Mr. Bradshaw became superintendent. Mr. Bradshaw believes the true worth of any school is shown in the quality of its product; there- fore, the Vernon Parish students are provided opportunities for growth and preparation to meet tomor- row's responsibilities. Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools School Board Member Ward Eight Mrs. J. C. Trotti, school board member of Ward Eight, has devoted much time to the im- provement of the Hicks High School facilities. One of the improvements to be accomplished in 1966 is the renovation of the gymnasium - audi- torium and the lunchroom. Mrs. Trotti cheerfully meets her responsibil- ity to provide each school child of Ward Eight a full opportunity to an education that will enable him to develop to the fullest extent of his ca- pacity. The Pirates tied for third place in District 7-B with the Hornbeck Hornets. The Pirates scored 2,541 points this past season for an average of 63 points a game. The opponents scored 2,699 points for an average of 67 points a game. The Lady Pirates this past basketball season compiled a 35-6 won-lost record. The Lady Pirates won first place in district with a perfect 10-0 won-lost record. In a best of three series with Anacoco, the Lady Pirates captured the District 7-B title with the Anacoco Indians taking second place. The girls won Bi-District by defeating Bordelonville with a score of 55-39. The girls lost in a Regional State playoff game to Gilbert by a 66-58 margin. During the course of the season the Lady Pirates scored 2,125 points for an average of 52 points a game. Due to the close defense of the guards, the opponents managed to score only 1,470 points for an average of 36 points a game. The Lady Pirates ended the season by winning the championship in six tournaments and one second place trophy. Three of the Lady Pirates (Naomi Monk, Connie James, and Dianne Causey) and one of the Pirates (Edmond Spurgeon) were awarded All-Tourney trophies at the Kinder Tournament. Naomi Monk, Connie James, Dianne Causey, and Edmond Spurgeon were also selected as All-District - a great honor because only six girls and five boys are selected from the distrct in which there are six schools. The selection is made by principals and coaches of the district, although no coach nor principal can vote for a member on his team. Coach Don Grant Coach Don Grant coached both the Lady Pirates and the Pirates this season. He coached the Lady Pirates to becoming 7-B District Champions and four of his players to making All-District Basketball Team. Coach Grant also coaches the baseball and track teams. Last season, he had one player, Edmund Lynn Spurgeon, to make All-District Baseball Team.
