DEDICATION To an understanding teacher and a real friend we dedicate this 1959 Pirate. We are proud of you, Mr. West, and proud to serve with you. We hope that in this small way we are able to show our appreciation for what you have done for us and our school. THE PIRATE STAFF LAJAYNEES JETER Business Editor WAYNE WOODHAM Snapshot Editor JAMES BURNS Artist PATRICIA MONK Feature Editor D. I. MORRISON Faculty Advisor MAURICE HALL Sports Editor LAMARR POE Ass’t. Editor GAYTHA HAGAN Feature Editor DELBERT SMITH MADELINE MORRISON Snapshot Editor Draftsman 1 am happy for this opportunity to commend the faculty and stu- dents of Hicks High School who have given freely of their time and ef- fort to make it possible for us to enjoy the many activities which are presented in this yearbook. As you review these pages, may you remember with enjoyment the good times you have had with your friends, and with satisfaction the profitable hours you have spent in the classroom. It is earnestly hoped that this pictorial history of highlights of the year's events may point out pleasurable memories and visible marks of progress and improvement. My best wishes go with each one of you represented in this publi- cation. Sincerely yours. Curtis Bradshaw, Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools The students of Hicks High School are to be congratulated on their many wonderful achievements during this school year. The scenes presented herein should be remembered with pride and accom- plishment throughout the years ahead. It is our sincere hope that we have pointed out lasting benefits of health- ful living, and impressed upon minds of our students the duties and responsibil- ities of good citizenship. Sincerely, William H. West. Principal We believe high school days are the happiest. We hope we have caught some of your dearest memories in our annual. Some of the impressions in this year's book will be gay, bliss- ful, joyous, or perhaps a trifle melancholy. As you leaf through these pages, in the future, remember Hicks School where we spent our merry youth. And now, it is with all sincerity that I say thank you to the yearbook staff who worked so tirelessly and patiently, to Mr. Woodham who was kind enough to provide us with trans- portation to Leesville to sell advertisements, and to Mr. Mor- rison who served as our faculty advisor. CLASS PROPHECY Since we the class of 1959 have trod the halls of Hicks Hi for the last time, we look into the crystal ball and see what success our schoolmates have made by First we'll look in on SHARON MONK and see her flying by in Jessie Glen’s new Cadillac. Looks like she still goes for those tight pants and snug sweaters. After all these years of looking and hoping, we see Glen still hasn't popped the question. Now who is that running across the back yard with a switch? Why, that's ESTELLE POE Merchant, and she is chasing her little girl who has peroxided her hair. GENE MONK has been in Alaska for several years now. He seems to de- light in Eskimo kisses, since his nose was peeled. JACKIE HARPER seems to have the most unusual entertainment of the time. He has finally mastered the art of spinning the basketball on his finger which he has been trying to achieve since his teens. This is due to his little boss, Carolyn, who always says, If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. ORVAN D. NICHOLS seems to have reached his goal, of being a successful airplane pilot and keeping Kate under his thumb. We next see LA JAYNEES JETER who always wanted to be just a plain secretary for a business man has reached the top, she is now Secretary of War to one of her beau's President, Carroll Gates. JAMES BURNS has followed in Pat Boone's foot- steps with 4 or 5 Gold hit records and also 4 beautiful daughters. We passed by the other day and saw MARJORIE DEASON sitting on a velvet covered chair in her beautiful home, dishing out the orders to her maids and butler with her very pretty twin daughters at her side. Billy, her husband, now is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in New York. They are planning for their yearly vacation visiting President Carroll Gates and his Secretary of War, La Jaynees Jeter. ARCHIE SMITH who was run over recently by a train, breaking both legs and an arm, is recovering rapidly at home. The accident occurred while Archie was chatting with an old friend, Ronnie Parker. ELSIE PEARL POE has reached her goal of becoming a good telephone operator. But we regret after all her romances she has never married. RONNIE PARKER has just invested a million dollars in a 1, 000 acre ranch in Mexico, the money which he won for having the leading part in an Academy Award picture.
