R flections From 1958 PRES WED BY THE 958 PIRATE STUPE OF H CKS H OH SC HO01 To one who unquestionably deserves this honor, we dedicate the 1958 Pi- rate. Never has one more deserved this honor than Mr. N. W. Causey, and it is our sincere wish that there was something even more that we could do to express ourappreciation forthe tireless efforts and endless patience he has demonstrated in his work with Hicks High School. Congratulations to the staff, their sponsors and to the many individuals who have made contributions toward the publication of this yearbook. May the pictorial scenes in this annual help you remember with enjoyment your school days, the pleasant associations with classmates and teachers, and help you to find inspiration to continue worthwhile activities. My wish is that your future will be so planned and lived that the important experiences of your life will bring you both honor and satisfaction. Sincerely yours. Cunis Bradshaw Superintendent Vernon Parish Schools The students of Hicks High School can well be proud of their educational system. There has been outstanding develop- ment and accomplishments in all fields of educational activities in your school community and progress has been made. There is a greater holding power of school now than ever be- fore. This is due to an improved and enriched program. The future well-being of your community and state will be largely determined by your ability to cultivate qualities of vision, imagination and intellectual re- sourcefulness. The New Industrial South needs men and women of highest type of inventive thinking in industry, commerce, engineering, farming and other basic production activities of your economy. Such qualities can be cultivated only in the classrooms in which children and youth are given an opportunity to develop their intellectual faculties, by expressing them. Therefore, look forwardto the mark of high calling of moral purity and intelligent thinking, always to act and walk uprightly in your several stations in life, being prudent in every duty to God, your country, your neighbor, your family and yourself. Principal We pause near the end of this, our Senior year, to collect our memories of the months just passed. As you thumb through the pages of this yearbook, re- membering the friends you had, the treasured moments, the best-loved scenes, and all the things that make up high school days--May the M 1958 Pirate pre- serve for you those cherished years of never-returning youth. My heartfelt thanks go to the wonderful staff and sponsors who have worked so tirelessly to make this Annual one we can all be very proud of. Sincerely. Edith didn't get a piece of bubble gum every day. Wayne Woodham wasn't always flirting with the girls. Jesse Glen had to sell his guitar. Mr. Kennedy didn't run errands for the whole school staff. Mr. Poe learned to operate the buffer. The mirrors were all removed from the Home Economics room. Mr. West's Science lectures couldn't be heard distinctly at the other end of the hall. Hicks High won every basketball game. It is with a solemn thought of sincerity, and the satisfaction of a job well done that we proclaim the approval of Hicks High School. This announcement was made to us in the following letter from the Louisiana State Department of Education. An examination of the annual school report and the observations made during our recent visit confirmed the fact that the Hicks High School is now meeting the minimum objective standards that are required of state-approved schools. Therefore, it is being listed as a state-approved school for the 1957- 1958 session. It was a pleasure to have an opportunity to see the excellent facilities that have been provided at your school. Moreover, we were especially pleased to note the quality of work which is being ac- complished by you, your teachers, and your students. Please be assured that we thoroughly appreciated the splendid hospitality which was extended to us during our visit. In the meantime, we shall be delighted to hear from you whenever this Department may be of further assistance to you and your faculty.
