K HIIIKIIRY HIGH SIIHIIIII SHARIIN, PENNSYLVANIA THEME As we seniors near the date for commencement and pre- pare our edition of the HICKORY NUT for publication, we look back upon our twelve years of study at Hickory. These twelve years have been important ones to us. They have helped us in many ways. Over the years we have learned to BELIEVE. We have come to have faith in the democratic way of life we enjoy here in America. We have learned to believe in our own ability and that of our neighbors-and with that belief has come re- spect for all. This faith and belief has been given to us in many ways. We have developed it through the activities and organizations we have enjoyed. In our clubs, our sports, and our social ac- tivities we have had a chance to apply that faith in democracy and in ourselves, we have learned to work happily and well with others. All this has come to us from the opportunity to BELONG. Last of all we have been taught to believe by the word and examples of our heroic and long-suffering teachers who have endured our pranks and our mischief from a desire to BUILD good and responsible citizens for our country's future. On this theme, BELIEVE . . . BELONG . . . BUILD, the class of I957 bases its yearbook. Believe Belong e icafion Mrs. Crawshaw -- A teacher whose personality, character, and smile are unforgettable. She is always around when problems arise. Anyone could feel free to go to her for advice and she would take time to explain carefully so as to avoid any embarrass- ment. . Her system of grading is fair and understanding. Her classes remind you of a home away from home. A class room is a place to feel at ease, and this is what her class rooms are. She always seems to leave some of her sunshine and happiness on every one of us. The students will never forget her and the TALE OF TWO CITIES. To her, the class of l957 is proud to dedicate the yearbook and wish her good luck in the future. School Calendar Summer vacation ended and the students were back in school. Everything was repaired during the summer, so everything looked real cheerful. Everyone was exchanging pictures and the first thing the seniors did was to have a class meeting. Jack Miller was elected president of the class. ln October we picked a football queen. Carol Burdett was elected queen and her attendant was Carole Cagno. Pat Niec crowned Carol on Octo- ber 20. ln November the seniors presented the play We Shook The Family Tree . This was a comedy and was enjoyed by everyone. ln the last part of November, several seniors participated in the Voice of Democracy contest. David McKay won at Hickory and also in the finals. Heaven on Earth was the theme for the Christmas Ball and the theme was carried out very well. After a nice Christmas vacation, the seniors came back in January to finish their last semester. ln February the valentine queen was elected. Nancy Sewall was queen, and her four attendants were Marge Bailey, Dorothy McCracken, Carole Hurme, and Arlene Sinkus. A lot of moans and groans were heard in March when the students received their polio shots. In April, the Juniors presented their play called Cheaper By The Dozen . Then May was here. The last month! The seniors practiced for Commencement and Bacca- laureate until it was perfect. Then it was all over. They had their diplomas. Horner Mr- H, Kennedy Mr. P, Likens Mr. E. Troke Kenneth Delahanty gufefzinfendenl Mr. Delahanty, superintendent of Hickory Schools, is the core of the character building plan in the township schools. The administration of the school system is centered in the superintendent's office. Because of this, the position of the superintendent must be held by a man of outstanding character. In Mr. Delahanty, Hickory Township has a man of these qualities and many more. The people of the township can feel secure in placing their sons and daughters under our superintendent's guidance. We must remember that an army is only as good as its leader, and to apply that to our case, we can only have good citizens tomorrow, when we have able leaders today. 35 A. R. Reimold, Keith Stoner Hickory Township is very fortunate to have two such fine men as Mr. K. W. Stoner and Mr. A. R. Reimold as principals of the Hickory Schools. As in any school system the principal must carry out orders and set an outstanding example of good citizenship for both his students and his teachers. Without able- men in the position of principals in our schools, training, guidance, and general education would soon tall to such a low degree that it would be useless to attend school. When two men have the high standards of Mr. Keith Stoner and Mr. A. R. Reimold, the township ot Hickory has nothing to worry about. For as long as men like this are in the school, the system will continue to grow and thrive. From this knowledge comes an under- standing of all people and a respect for their ideals-a vital necessity in dealing with others. Commercial Department The Commercial Department is for girls in- terested in working in the business world. The main idea of this course is to gain prac- tice. The students gain knowledge of working conditions during this course. This helps them to become more efficient and able to rely on themselves. The students are rated among the highest by the businessmen of the valley. A school system must see that the community understands what the school is accomplishing. The school trains and places students on jobs in the business world. ln this way they support a public relations need. Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Moore, Miss Adams g8C'LZtG'!.l.l Mrs. l.illy, the secretary to the superintendent, is a very capable person. She has the job of making out the payroll for all the teachers. Among other responsibilities she keeps the school accounts. Mrs. Lilly Guidance The guidance department of the school is compiled of men and women, who devote much time and energy to the problems of the student. They not only help the student when he has trouble in school, but they also, if consulted, will aid a student who has trouble on an after school job or at his home. The staff of the guidance department is made up ot very capable people, Our counselors help to create an able citizenry for the future. -gust! To provide these fundamentals, the English Department teaches students to express themselves correctly. F ' 1 A 3 X g . , 11 t 5 '11, - . Home Economics The study of vocational and general homemaking is a three year ele-ctive course. ln this course you may learn about nutrition, food preservation, food preparation, clothing construction, clothing selection, good grooming, child care, tailoring, consumer buy- ing, family relationships, home plan- ning, and home- furnishing. Also taught are nursing, textiles, leisure time activities, budgets, and interior decoration. The general home economics course is for an academic student as well as a student refresher course for enter- ing adulthood. Industrial Arts The mechanical drawing depart- ment, metal shop and wood shop come under the heading of Industrial Arts. These courses are offered to those students who have a talent and interest in creating. The student has the satisfaction of creating some- thing through his own efforts, whether it be a wooden lamp, a metal cookie cutter, or a blueprint of a house, The student learns to put into practical use the skills which he has developed in the classroom. Mr. Mangus, Mr. Brown Math Department Math is taught to give all students a command of the processes of arithemetic and mathematics. Everyone needs this knowledge to get jobs and keep his personal money and property matters in order. The courses that our school offers include: physics, al- gebra, trig, plane geometry, and consumers math. The every day uses of math are emphasized the most. Measurements, banking, insurance, and taxes are examples of some of the useful skills taught. Row l. Mr, Floros, Mr. Bigenho. Row 2. Mr, Currie, Mr. Webster, Mr. Ohr, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Webster, Mr. Maxwelr, Hisfofuf Depafzfmenf The American Way of Life. This is what we are taught in the Social Studies Department. All are created equal, and yet we have people in America who cannot color or the learn to get You government move about freely or obtain a good iob because of skin church they attend. To make life worth living, we must along with and see the other fellows point of view. must be an informed citizen to contribute to a better This is another way we build democracy. All of these things we are taught in our classes to keep our democracy strong and undivided. Row l, Mrs. Wehner, Mrs. Garrett, Row 2. Mr. Black, Miss Rutter, Mr. Mook. Heahh ln order to be good and responsible citizens we must be well-developed, not only in mind and spirit, but also in body. To do so we must guard our health carefully. The Health department begins charting the student's physical conditions so that he lthe student? will know his limi- tations and whether or not he will need a doctor's care. An important job undertaken by the department this year was the program for polio inoculations. This program should have tar reaching effects on health in Hickory Town- ship. Mrs. Frantz, Dr. S. Wm. Arnundsen Speech Mrs, Swartz, Miss Ormond Through our study of speech we not only learn to express ourselves clearly and attractively, but we develop many personal characteristics which will be a great help in our later lives. The most important of these characteristics is the confidence we gain in ourselves through daily classes and participation in student productions. 42 Art 1-ii wfrii E I Mrs. Lake The art course is offered to those stu- dents interested in learning the art of ex- pressing themselves creatively. Art sup- plies an understanding of the things of beauty in the Student's surroundings, This experience prepares the art stu- dents for future occupations and home decoration. Art is required in certain grades to give each student an opportunity to decide from experience whether or not he will like and appreciate it. Journalism Library The library is a source of information. This is where we go to study and secure our facts about most anything we desire to study. The library contains a wide variety of educational materials. The library is used not only by students but also by teachers. Mr. Brinkley By studying journalism we learn to ex- press ourselves clearly in writing. This is an ability which will prove valuable to any- one, whether or not they are interested in writing as a career. A continuous and efficient cataloging system allows for ease in locating items among the rapidly increasing stock of ma- terials. Mr. Green Music Understanding and appreciating music has a definite value. Our music department strives to pass this value on to the student. The vocal department and the instrumental department offer each student a chance to put his own specific talents to work. Our school has come far in fostering the appreciation of good music. D. Heimberger, Mrs, Godfrey, Miss Javens. Mr. Faulkner, Mr. Riley, Miss Kingsley, Mr. Kulusich, Mr. Cohen. ecfzefafzies Our secretaries make an important contribu- tion to the school. They work hard and set a good example for the students. Among their duties are channeling the tele- phone calls, keeping the students' accumulative records iwhich are used by the secretaries to send grades to the collegesl, and sending references to interested employers of students. 44 Row l. Coulter, B, Anderson us Dzivezs Many of the students would not be able to reach the school, if it were not for the daily run of the bus drivers. With our rapidly growing population in the last few years our need for more bus drivers has increased. Neither rain nor snow can keep the Hickory bus drivers from their duties. Maintenance Without the maintenance department our school could not function properly. Keeping the classrooms clean, maintaining the heating system, and keeping the equipment in top working con- dition are just a tew ot the many duties of the maintenance department. Sitting, Mrs. R. Most of the boys play because of a belief in sportsmanship, and the feeling of belonging that only teamwork can give. Any of the boys will tell you that the rough training and the bruising that they may take in a game is worth it if the student body is behind the team. Managers M. Butulla, B. Hodgson, IT.
