Board of Education at Work Come in and sit in on a meeting of the school board You will go to Mr Delohunty s office on the second floor There the five members of our board meet and discuss the problems and plans of that day The members of our board of education are not professional educators they are members of this community who have gained the respect of their fellow citizens so that they were chosen to represent the community in one of the most important func tions of the community Their ,ob requires much time and effort and only too often receives insufficient recognition The duties the board of educatron performs are innumerable Among some of their duties are selecting the personnel supervision of the financial situation of the schools and establishment of general policies for the work of the school Selecting the personnel must be done carefully not only in regard to md: vidual efficiency but also in consideration of the absolute need of school employees to be able to cooperate properly lt is on the school board that the people must depend for fixing the amounts to be roused by taxation and for conducting the schools within the funds available The school board has a great responsibility in that they have o large part in the planning and study which determine the educational philosophy of the school system what are the most efficient methods of supplying the desired services to the students Every member must have on understanding of all new developments in every phase of the educational field and they must decide how they can be applied to our new school system The school board could never do their lab as satisfactorily if they didn t have the support of the citizens It is necessary for the members to see to it that the public is informed of what the school system is trying to do what it needs to do it ond what progress has been made at each stage of development ln order to perform all these innumerable duties it is necessary for the board members to have a thorough knowledge of the general structure of a school s system equipment that is needed and personnel of the schools This can be acquired through personal visitations and through information sup plned by the supervising principal Each school board member has accepted the responsibility for the edu cation of the young people of the community They realize that this respons :bility is an especially serious one in a democratic society o society that has many dangerous outlets which may be taken if the student has the wrong background Membership on the board of education is o hard exacting task and the men who serve on it are to be commended for their public spirit and willing ness to accept civic duties I They must decide what the pupils should receive from the schools and
