One of the best teachers of these principles has been Miss Minnie Bevlyn, our Senior class sponsor. Not only has she exemplified these principles in her classes, but she has been a sympathetic listener and helpful advisor to all who have had occa- sion to consult her. Her friendliness, her willingness to help, and her effective work as senior advisor have won her a high place in every student's esteem. Therefore, as a token of our appreciation, we dedicate to her this Hickory Nut of 1945. X. fear , I' in THOSE SERVING THEIR FROM HIC Y' ' SQQQ A inn-can A111 nun' HQ! We were ush- ered into Dr. Woo's study by a tall distinguished-looking butler who an- nounced us and left us alone with the greatest genius of all time. After an interesting interview we prepared for departure, but Dr. Woo detained us promising to show us his latest, and undoubtedly great- est invention. He swore us to secrecy about what we sawg but, after due consideration, we have decided to pass the secret on to you. We were led into a small laboratory where we were confronted by a fantastic jumble of dials, levers, and grotesque framework which Dr. Woo explained was a machine which would carry one into the future. Noticing 'the expressions of doubt on our faces, he suggested that we be the first outsiders to test the machine. Curiosity overcame fear and we accepted his offer. After explaining the control board he launched us on our adventure with a good-luck wish, and we began our strange journey into the unknown. As we catapulted through time and space the dials indicated an increasing number of years. Month after month, season after season, slid into the past. VVe pulled a lever and stopped with a jolt in the year nineteen hundred and sixty-four, and found ourselves on Keel-Ridge Hill, overlooking the thriving city of Hickory, Pennsylvania. Descending into the main section of town our attention was attract- ed by a shouting newsboy, who offered us a paper. We fished in our pockets for a dime to pay him, and proceeded to a near-by park bench where we settled ourselves comfortably to read the latest news. Imag- ine our surprise to find in the headlines that a presidential election was due and that one of the candidates was none other than Wilma Jane Kerber, governor of Pennsylvania, on the Republican ticket. Turning to the society page we read that the Rt. Rev. Richard G. Robins, D. D. was the guest speaker at the last meeting of the Merry Mother's Mending Club. Members present included Mrs. Donald Miller fDoris Pattonl, Mrs. Ted Rogers fDorothy Stinedurfl, Mrs. Maynard Swanson Clrma Truxellj, and Mrs. Clyde McWilliams tMarguerite Vasseny We also found on the society page that a nurses' alumni tea had been given in honor of Miss Eileen Beyer, director of the local hospital. Nurses attending were Pauline Ondic, Doris Orr, Mary Jane Osborne, Ruth Shaffer, Jessie Maner, Peggy Meenihan, and Alice Ruth Smith. Under 'theaters' we found that Fred Corbett and Julia Mogor were to have important roles in the opera Faust which was scheduled for the next season at the Metropolitan Opera. Our eyes were attracted to the seemingly outlandish styles of dress featured in the fashion section. Creations by the famous designer, Fran- ces Christy, were modeled by Joan Dermond, Virginia Tallarico and Velma Kaluzne-all famous Horzich models. Hearing a sudden commotion we looked around and saw a crowd gathering in front of the radio station. We joined the group and among them spied a press photographer whom we recognized as Bertha Gen- eralovich. She informed us that the famous romantic star of stage and screen. Jose' Longlash fJoe Molaskyl, was scheduled to appear in a radio drama written by Regina Kilgore, well-known playwright. His co-star was to be Hetty Vampton iBetty Framptonl, beautiful dramatic actress. The crowd was anxiously awaiting their arrival. The group arrived in two limousines. In the first car were Jose and his wife fJoan Lovel, his three personal nurses fMarilyn, Kathryn, and Audrey Auldj and his secretary, Miss Betty Lou Millison. Out of the second car stepped Hetty, her beautician fViolet Pattonl , her secre- tary iMary Petroskyj, producer William Fair and his wife fNora Mur- rayj, and the make-up director-Walter Cheplick. WVe eagerly fol- lowed them into the studio and were shown to our seats. The previous program Miss I. Q. f1VIaxine Plakel, sponsored by Dr. Lunn's Loony Liniment, was just signing off. We noticed Earl Zahniser and Gerald Stainbrook, radio technicians, behind the glass walls of the control room. The long awaited performance commenced and we settled ourselves comfortably to enjoy it when the program was suddenly interrupted by announcer Bill Brown with a special news bulletin. A huge forest fire had been reported by forest ranger, Gene Sebastian, to the local fire chief, David Herr. An investigation ordered by chief of police, Gene Smith, and conducted by patrolman, Gabby Jones, resulted in the arrest of fire-bug Paul Trapasso, who had previously been warned by police. It was later announced that Edward Steele, Trapasso's lawyer, had prov- ed him innocent of the charges. The next program was sponsored by Marion Robb's Beautifying Cream for the skin you love to touch and can't. Testimonials as to its merits were given by hard working girls--Mary Ann Dillinger, Sarabelle McCullough, Jean Pears, Edith Johnson and Anne Antus. When we left the studio we decided to hire a taxi and do some sight- seeing. We hailed a cab on which was painted-MAGARGEE'S TAXI SERVICE-Any complaints?-See Ross, the boss, concerning loss. We engaged in conversation with the driver who turned out to be Alex Gorichky. He informed us that Owen Stull, Bellen Peretic, Lloyd Stull and Gleason Anderson were also driving taxis. We were absorbed in our conversation when suddenly the motor stalled and the car slowly came to a standstill. However, luck was with us for we were directly across the street from Snyder's Super Service Station. Two of Bill's mechanics, Paul Hassell and Joe Mudrak, made the necessary repairs and We continued on our journey. The next object of interest was a large building bearing the sign- BENTLEY'S BENTOPLANE FACTORY- It runs on land, on sea, or in the air. We decided to renew our acquaintance with Roland and leav- ing the cab entered the office building. We were amazed to see his large staff of office employees including Elsie Kamensky, Esther Novak, Bessie Jagatich, Marion Ferguson, Lela McGarvey and Ruth Kulhavy. Roland's private secretary Phyllis Margaret Johnson, ushered us into his inner office, where we encountered a hearty welcome. Nothing would do but that we accompany Roland home to dinner-an invitation we readily accepted. As we left the office we were interrupted by chief draftsman, Donald Cornthwait, who showed us some drawings of the latest Bentoplane model. On the way to Roland's home we passed the local high school, a fContinued on page 813 Senlor Song TOGETHER We strolled the hllls together Came In all kll1dS ot Weather Sang oul sehool song together And we all xxlshed then It would IICXLI end We worked and plab ed togethel All made thc grade together' We I6 gone flom you But ou1 he nts lem un true Vl e alwaxs xxlll be togethel Colols Green and Whlte Vlotto Lost tlme 18 nex er found FIOVSGI Yellow Rose Semor Class Poem As we leaxe the halls of H1Ck01y Whele happy days xx cle spent We xull dream of all 1ts treasures And smlle Ill deep content We xe shed a few departlng tears But ex ervone has hls tlme To stut up the laddu of great careers And we 11. leady 101 th lt cllmb VVe hope that thoughts of H1CkOFX Vlxll foru G1 be enshllned In the hearts of those who leaxe It To 10111 the March of Tlme C .' Later in the year came the magazine campaign, which, spon- sored by the Council, proved very successful. Toward the end of the year the Council organized a checker tournament in which all classes participated. However, these were but a few activities of the ever busy Council, which directed a great part of school activities and kept things in smooth running order. Advisor-Mr. Arthur L. Houck. The Science Club is one of the newest and at the same time one of the most active organizations in the school. One of the first clubs to organize in the fall, the group made plans for providing funds to pay part of the expenses to the spring Science Convention. To do this they sold novelty pencils inscribed with the school song and basketball schedule, managed a noon cafeteria two days a week, and engaged in other pecuniary activities. In December, the youthful scientists pre- sented an interesting assembly, mystifying the students with scientific phenomenom. Science club meetings were held twice a month in the physics laboratory. At the day meetings experiments were conducted by members of the group following the business meetings and the club had interesting programs and outside speakers for the night meetings. In January, new members were subjected to initiation after which they were inducted in an impressive induction ceremony. Climaxing these and other activities with a trip to Pittsburgh to visit places of scientific interest, the club had a year of new and interesting activities. The officers who directed the Science Club's activities during the past year Were: President, Dick Robinsg vice president, George Huntg secretary- treasurer, Phyllis McClimansg program chairman, Frances Christy. In September the club held the initiation and induction of its new members at a bonfire rally behind the high school building. The Hi-Y participated in a school clean-up campaign in cooperation with other clubs. Following the expiration of the official basketball season, the members of this group laid the plans and worked out the mechanics of an intramural basketball tournament which is held under the sponsorship of the Hi-Y. As in previous years this proved a success, the main reason for the project being, to em- phasize and encourage the ideals of fair play, good sportmanship, and cooperation. The monitors are a valuable contribution to the school. Their primary duties include helping strangers and keeping the halls and rooms of the school clean. One of their chief duties, to check on students loitering around the halls and rest rooms, was well carried out throughout the year. The aim of the monitors and student council is to promote coopera- tion among the students and faculty. The students from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes ap- preciate and respect the honor they were given when chosen to serve as monitors. MONITORS MAINTAIN ORDER Q ICKURY LEAF HICKORY LEAF INFORMS THE PEOPLE This year for the first time the Leaf staff had the names of fresh- men, sophomores, and juniors on its role. Heretofore, the school paper was edited and published by seniors alone, but this year certain posi- tions were held open to underclassmen. Joe Horzich received the editorship, and under his direction the paper developed into the best publication ever produced at Hickory. The reason for the improve- ment of this year's paper over others was the addition of new articles of interest to all the students, and the presentation of the paper's ma- terial in such a manner as to induce the students to look forward to the next edition. The staff of the Hickory Leaf is to be congratulated for the fine work it has done this year. THE STAFF Editor ............................ .................................. ....... A close examination of the contents of this book will tell far better than words of the great amount of time and effort put forth by the staff members to publish this annual as you see it now. Little will ever be known of the trips to the cover company and printing firms by editors and advisor to settle a point in question or to investigate possibilities of change or improvement, of the lengthy reports and write-ups to be sweated over, polished, typed and edited, of the volume of information to be gathered and compiled. With this money we have purchased instruments for both the band and orchestra. We now have practically full instru- mentation in the band. During the year the band marched at parades, played for assem- blies and other activities. It played for the basketball games and during the halves gave colorful performances by forming different formations on thqe floor, led by our Majorette and Drum Major. A Band Booster Club was organized consisting of the band and orchestra members who contributed to the band fund. It has been very successful in its plan to make the band one of the best in this section. The president is Mr. Lehman. The successful school year was ended for the band and orchestra by their holding of the annual Banquet and Band Prom in the spring. DIRECTOR :-MR. LOUIS COHEN THE SENIOR PLAY fContinued from page 681 trenches, but is fortunately sidetracked by a susceptible bachelor CDick Robinsj who is also a guest at the Colburns. When Janie fJoan Dermondl and Dick and a few of their friends get together for a little innocent fun while the elders are dining at the country club, the party gets out of hand. The plot is also complicated to a degree by Janie's seven year old sister, Elsbeth iDoris Pattonh, an enterprising child with an inventive mind and a genius for making a nuisance of herself. Lazorishak, W. Johnson, W. Horsman, J. Anderson, B. Williams, B. Bogolin, D. Rust, R. Burdick, H. Moore, F. Boles, A. Murray, J. Moody. JUNIOR VARSITY Our Junior Varsity was a team that took all the hard bumps, their coaches were changed most of the year each one offering something new in style of play. They came to practice, but had to either wait until Varsity was finished or scrimage against the Varsity. Coming out from under all these hardships, they stuck it out for the season and thus displayed a smooth working, hard playing little team, losing only three of the seasons encounters. These boys of the Junior Varsity are the material that will be used, in years to come, on the Varsity squad. We know that when they can cooperate and show a season record like this while still on the Junior Varsity that the Varsity team in the future will become the championship team of the county. They have set up a season record of 16 victories and 3 defeats. The schedule: Hickory 44 Sandy Lake ....... ..... Hickory ....... ...... 3 5 Mercer ........................ ..... FOOTB LL We the Seniors of '45 are very proud and sincerely happy to print in this issue of the Hickory Nut the welcome news of the opening of a new field of sports here at Hickory. By this we mean the news that was revealed earlier in the school year succeeding a meeting of the School Board on October 9, 1944. During the Gridiron Season of 1945 Hickory High School will display a football squad, and enter against other schools in the valley. We at Hickory know that we have material to fill the holes in the line and backfield, and are confident that the team turned out next season will be a team to be remembered in years to come. As students look back in Football His- tory and read the scores, the upsets, and vic- tories, we will be proud to know that we helped to push this idea through while we were still on the steps of learning.
