DELAHUNTYS MESSAGE Complaint is often expressed that the present gen- eration has made a mess of things and that it has left a shabby heritage to the generation which is just now coming upon the stage. What have the boys and girls done, it is asked, to deserve the lot which is theirs? The wo1'ld ravaged by war. a national economy that is un- uj stable, no promise of security. lVhy have the older men I if and women, who have controlled the destinies of nations, allowed things to get into such a shape? The answer is that the older men and women have not controlled destiny. It controlled destiny. It con- trolled them. They have not shaped the course of things. They have not known how. They have not understood social. economic, and political movements. These can be undtrstood only through education. They did not have the opportunity to study these forces. VVhether young people in school or college actually prepare themselves to control social development or not, they have a chance to do so-a chance which those who are now older never had. A boy or girl slaving in a mill or on a farm has little opportunity to acquire information KENNETH R' DELAHUNTY and inspiration necessary for leadership. A boy or girl in high school does have the chance. lf the opportunity is wasted: if youth complains, then fritters time away, tlfdllif only what is required in the daily rounds of the schools, it gyill hav.. gomothing. to explain if the next generation complains of a ruined civilization. But keep this in mind: Youth has :1 chance. lt may rebuild a torn down world. lt may create a new security, new foundations of happiness-a great opportunity and a profound responsibility. ADMINI TR TION MR. HOUCICS MESSAGE At the helm tomorrow will be the youth of today. The quality of leadership tomorrow will depend on the quality of preparation today. The failures of life sit around and complainfthey complain that the future looks dark. that our debts will destroy us, that we are headed for destruction, for trouble and that one of these days we will encounter problems which no one can solve. The future today is no blacker than it always has been. When the Northern Pacific Railway was built west from Minneapolis and St. Paul, the investors who af put up the money went out on the first trip of the train over the road. They were afraid that the railroad would fail and hurried home and sold their stock. But the railroad is still running. When Marshall Field built his great stoi'e in Chicago, people said the store was too ARTHUR L. HOUFK big for the town. But it is one of the world's wonder stores. When Eads built the bridge across the Mississippi :it St. Louis there were people who said it would never pay, Go on through history. The men with little ideas never catch up with the leaders, never understand that the future always seems dire. forbidding. lt's the man who delivers the goods that succeeds and not the one who always complains. Success is the ability to grasp the main chance when it comes: is a thing determined by determination: is an end to be attained not hy doing the things we like to do but liking to do the things we have to do: is a thing which you will never come to if you are disturbed by the success of others: is a thing half won if you gain the habit of work. There are still frontiers to conquer. Make the most of every passing opportunity to prepare yourself to meet the challenge of tomorrow. From this group were chosen quartets, trios, and other ensembles for special programs. Many of the group were soloists. Rehearsals were held three times a week on the stage. This year the Senior Chorus sent a large number of representatives to the Midwest District Chorus which was held April 13, 14, and 15 at Farrell High School. Those selected had the opportunity to work under the direction of Noble Cain, famous choral conductor from Chicago. THE CLEE CL B The Glee Club consisted this year of sixty girls who sang two and three-part harmony. Rehearsals were held twice a week on the stage. Those who qualify will be selected as members of next year's Senior Chorus. Fundamentals of choral work were stressed, although plenty of time was reserved for purely recreational singing. Both the Senior Chorus and the Glee Club took part in the annual Minstrel show given in April. This production gave opportunities to talented students to entertain the public. Osborne.
