T reasurer 19 SENIOR FAREWELL Ship ahoy: The anchor is lifted, The seniors set sail from Port Hickory Hig For the time has come to say Good-bye, To other shipmates now enlisted. Four years we spent within this bay, With a light house eager to guide, Those on a rough or smooth tide, But the end of that voyage has come to-day. Now we turn to the distant sea, Beyond the horizon with courage and strife, We look to a new and Venturous life, Ship ahoy: another journey begins for you and you and me. -ELEANOR HOAGLAND. SHIPMATES FOREVER Our ship is anchored in the harbor, With her banner hoisted high, Seniors, forty-eight in number, About to leave old Hickory High. We stand on deck, in blue and white, With eager faces to the west, Ready to do with all our might, Whatever we know is for the best. Shipmates forever, may we always be, Ready to lend a helping handy As we sail o'er the waters of life's stormy sea Always a faithful, worthy band. And as we lift the anchor, To begin our endless trip, May our cry ring o'er the water, We won't give up the ship. -HELENE MCCUE. 20 Env GROWING PAlNS George CJohn Steeleb and Terry McIntyre CAnne Dobroskyl are the adolescent children, seventeen and fifteen respectively, of Profes- sor fChester Barlettb and Mrs. McIntyre CRhoda Johnsonj. They go through all the trials of boys and girls growing up. Terry doesn't want to give up playing with the boys, and George, thinking he is quite grown up, wants everything his own way and he won't be babied. George and Terry go through this period of adolescence in com- pany with the neighborhood boys and girls. Terry fancies she is in love with Brian CJoe Weller! and is quite wrought up when Prudence Darling CMildred Parkerj moves into the neighborhood and captures his heart. The most active part of the play is the party given by Terry and George because George has had his tonsils out. Things move swiftly from then on. George is arrested for assulting a traffic officer CJack McKeeJ. Prudence refuses George's proposal, Brian comes back to Terry and George has to give up his car CThe Jigsaw Puzzlel. All their troubles with Geometry, French and Latin, all their fun and all the tricks they played were brought to light. , Janet Ferver as the historian presented the review, showing them in the first grade learning their A B C's, in the Intermediate Department as Boy Scouts, and there finishing their eighth grade with a May Day celebration. The next chapter finds them in the high school studying Algeba, Latin, History, Science and English. The play ends with the launching of the class ship out on the Sea of Life. ' CAPTAIN . . Chet was particularly adept at taking the ball from the defensive bank board and starting the offense. A good passer and a better than average shot made Chet very valuable. He will be a hard man to replace when next basketball season starts. McKEE, JACK Jack, midget stellar guard of the first team. Jack received his varsity letter in his freshman year when he was used as a sub. During his freshman and sophomore years he proved himself so valuable that he climbed up a rung to play the guard position on the first five. Jack played a wonderful defensive game, and although many times his man was bigger than he, it made no difference to Hank. He was a dead shot, especially on long ones. This is Jack's last year of basketball at Hickory High. NYE, GEORGE CREDJ Although Red was the smallest man on the squad, he played a fine steady game at forward. Though Red didn't lead the team in scoring, he played a good floor game. After a rather slow start, Red improved steadily until in the latter part of the season, he became an indespen- sible cog in the quint. This was Red's first year as a regular and second as a letterman. AICHER, JOHNNY Johnny did his work on the pivot post like a veteran although he is only a sophomore. In his freshman year he made the second team. Johnny was the leading scorer of the team. He was a tower of strength under the hoop in addition to being able to get the tip from practically all his opponents. In future years Johnny should develop into one of the best pivot men that was ever turned out by the red and black. BARLETT, GENE Gene, a sophomore, played a fine steady game at forward. This is Gene's second year on the varsity squad. He received his letter in his freshman year when he was used as a sub. In addition to being one of the team's highest scorers, Gene was a good offensive floor man. Since Gene is only a sophomore, big things are expected of him in coming years. 53 U I , I Yfarzjff-vp . I ,Au as-' 1'f GILLILAN D, CARL Carl served the role as a first string substitute. He played a good brand of ball at either forward or guard. He is an efficient floorworker and handled himself in a very adept manner while on the floor. This is his second year as a varsity man and second as a letterman. Carl is lost by graduation. BITTLER, LEWY Lewy was a substitute guard. During his time of substitution he proved himself very capable at guard. Lewy played a good brand of ball, holding his opponents to a low score. 'iBing is also quite a student in addition to his athletic powers. He is lost by graduation. VOLKEY, ANDREW Andy was used as a sub forward. He did some fine work especially toward the end of the season. Andy is a sophomore and great things are expected of him in the future. MEGOWN, CHARLES Muggs did some nice work when he was sent in as a substitute forward. His specialty was the long shot. This is Muggs' first year on the varsity and he still has a year to go. ' WINGER, LEO Leo was used as a sub guard in a number of games. He is a very fine defensive man and it takes a good player to get away from him. This is Leo's first year on the squad, having come from Sharon, and he will be with us for two more years. 54 21 GAMES .... NINE WINS Nine wins .... Twelve defeats .... C. THE HIGHER THEIR MARKS OUNG students often iind arithmetic and geography a rather irksome task. Study be- comes even more difficult with unnecessary eye- strain. In the schoolroom, teachers try to see that their pupils all have sufficient light. At home, parents should also make sure that their children have the right amount of shaded light when they do their homework. Light is inexpensive but children's eyesight is priceless.
