Z. Smith Mr. Douglas Autry Superintendent Mr. John Daughtery — FEDERAL FUNDED REMEDIAL PROGRAM in Benton County Schools Chapter 1 , formally Title 1, is into its eighteenth year of assisting with the provision of supplemental remedial education for Benton County students. Counting each child annually during the time he received instruction, approxiamtely 10,000 students have benefited from this federally funded program. Although federal regulations and state requirements governing Chapter 1 have changed many times over the years, remedial reading and math con- tinue to be the prime concern. The grades and areas to be addressed are determined annually by a needs assessment completed by classroom teachers. Supplemental classes are then provided in the subjects where students exhibit the greatest weakness. These classes in no way replace any regular classes, and provide additional help beyond basic instruction that all students receive. The individaul student's eligibility is determined by scores on standardized achievement tests, lhese are given twice a year to all Chapter 1 students. Spring test scores are used to identify students with the greatest need. Fall test scores are used as a basis for comparison with spring scores to determine each child's progress. One other test, a diagnostic tool, is given once a year to pinpoint each child's specific weaknesses and indicate to the teacher needed methods and materials. In additional to the education program outlined above Chapter 1 pro- vides a health program for identified target students. With parental permission, health screenings and in some cases medical corrections are offered. Eligibility for medical correction money is determined on the basis of need, family size, and income. Students identified as target students for the 84 85 session indicate the following: School Grades Served RDG.
