n y j -r What is :,-Vv V; ;i'r. ■ V :, ■ «Lwtr m J mm a high school? When you think of a high school, what do you see? This is the picture that comes to me: A high school is people - teenagers and all. It's assemblies and classes and a rush in the hall. It's panic at report cards; it's red and white; It’s thrills and excitement that never grow old. Suspense fills the hallways, and rivalry's keen. All yearn for a scholarship; who will be Annual Queen? A high school means projects and clubs with their fun, And everyone working till all tasks are done; Tense moments at ball games - Will we win or not? That Fightin' School spirit means more than we thought! What is a high school? What is its story? We've told it here in all of its glory! During recess and lunch the elementary students have fun on the playground supervised by Mrs. Ayres and Miss Daniel. It's hard to tell who enjoys the Hillbilly act more, the Seventh Grade girls or their audience. STUDENTS AND The Junior-Senior Banquet is a special event en- joyed by both student and teacher each year. Work is a very definite part of Hickory Flat school. Here typing students receive instruc- tions on typing a busi- ness letter from Miss Dixon. One of the exciting events at the begin- ning of school was the Annual King and Queen Contest. Deborah and Lanny seem happy over the results. Mr. Doyle, Mr. Mohundro and Mrs. Gresham assist the stu dents in decorating the stage for the Beauty Revue. TEACHERS WORK AND PLAY TOGETHER 4 WE SALUTE OUR TOWN The 1964 School Annual salutes OUR TOWN. Hickory Flat, to us, means many things. It means Home, and wherever we may be in the years ahead, we will remember it, with its abun- dance of churches, its factory, its stores, its bank, and its quiet streets and lovely homes. OUR TOWN means all the people in it. It means their friendliness, their thoughtfulness, their kind- ness, their generosity, their support. It means the place where many of us were born, and where some of our loved ones are buried. It means the place our parents chose as the possible one for the rearing of their families. OUR TOWN means progress. Not only do we have our older busi- nesses, but new ones along the highway have added to the prosperity of us all. To Hickory Flat, OUR TOWN, in this salute we offer our appreciation and our thanks for the things you mean to us. TABLE OF CONTENTS MIND FACULTY ADMINISTRATION BODY HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR HIGH ELEMENTARY SPIRIT FEATURES CLUBS SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS MIND The minds of first grade students are imma- ture and undisciplined. As school years pass, the mind grows and grasps for fundamentals of living. Teachers represent the ultimate in mental growth in schools. It is to them the minds of children are given as a vital trust. And it is only in the meeting of teachers' minds and pupil's minds That this trust can be fulfilled. The Mind is the thinking part of the school. The Teachers are the trustees of the minds. Since Mr. Burt came to Hickory Flat in I960, the school has shown much improvement in every department. This type of progress can only be accomplished through the devotion of time and energy to the task at hand Every day he deals with students' problems, supervises school activities and maintains strict discipline in a fitting blend of authority and understanding. We appreciate this interest and enthusiasm in our school and want to take this opportunity to thank him for all he has done in the interest of our further education FACULTY MR. J. P. What memories the sights of these build- ings on Hickory Flat Hi campus bring back to us. All the excitement of experiments and chemistry problems in the Science Building. The noise of saws and the finishing of projects in the Agriculture Building. Our Gymnasium will always hold fond memories of basketball practice and most of all the fun of a basket- ball game and the excitement it brings. ALL THESE AND MORE ARE INDELIBLY IMPRESSED IN OUR MEMORY. AGRICULTURE BUILDING MEMORIES OF HICKOR Y FLA T BODY The Body is the vehicle around which mortal life exists. It has in its being the process of continual growth. The Student Body of a school is the vehicle around which school life is maintained. Its function is one of continuous growth. Both the human body and the Student Body are made up of many facets. Foremost in the Student Body is the welfare of the individual. The Student Body is the heart of the school. 9 f I | f SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President - - Vice-President Secretary - - Treasurer - - Reporter - - - - - BARBARA AYRES - BILLY THOMPSON BRENDA THOMPSON - - LANNY AUTRY - FRANCES MOODY BILLY THOMPSON FFA 1, 2, 3, 4; Who’s Who 4; 4-H 1, 2, 3,4; Play 3, 4; Class Officer 2, 3, 4. GLEE CLUB MUSIC STUDENTS Miss Evelyn Henderson BASKETBALL Early in the fall the basketball players began to practice. With the addition of several new players, our team was complete. Under the gui- dance of Coach Koon, the boys practiced diligently. The fruit of all their labor paid off when the team defeated Ashland, a friendly rival, in the second game. In the Bi-County Tournament the team's determination to win brought them victory over Ashland, and they went on to play Holly Springs. Our boys played up to their usual, potent standards the night of the game, but were not quite good enough to 'overcome the Tigers of Holly Springs. The team entered the Tallahatchie Conference which was played in our gym- nasium. The Rebels played to win then they defeated the Ashland Blue Devils. Even though they had an eagerness to win, they were defeated by Myrtle near the end of the tournament. In the New Albany Tournament, the team played Ingomar. They were dissappointed with Ingomar being victorious over them when the game came to an end, but they had a satisfaction of representing their school by displaying good sportsmanship. Although the year's record was not as outstanding as in the past sea- sons, the players did a tremendous job on the court representing our school, our spirit and our capabilities in an appropriate manner. Next year’s team will be without the benefit and services of Dale Wilson, a graduate of the class of 1964.
