fgitgdicaf gycfvwafionf Cfoww For the first time in the history of Hickman High School, Kewpie students have the opportunity of taking physical education five days a week, This was made possible by the addition of a new gymnasium, including a much larger shower, locker rooms for both girls and boys and new physical education offices. The new gym has made it possible for two classes to be carried on at one time. This is done by an electrically operated partition which divides the gym into two equal sections. In the photo at right, one of the girls' gym classes demonstrates their skill in learn- ing basketball. 5 156 QM! The industrious commerce department at Hickman is fortunate in having four teachers and five courses in the field of practical arts. Of these five courses, shorthand and typing are usually taken first. These two courses are followed by secretarial practice, which is a course designed to better prepare the student for the world of business. Bookkeeping is also a course which is a useful aid in preparing for office work, The class helps the student not only in working with numbers but also in helping him to es- tablish a pattern of neatness. WILLIAMS ngers The fine arts department at Hickman consists of three main divisions. the vocal department, directed by Mr. Kent Toalsong the instrumental department, conducted by Mr, Leo Behrensg and the speech department, headed by Mrs, Helen Williams. The vocal clubs, Choraleers , Madri- gal Singers, and Modern Music Masters, are active groups under the able leader- ship of Mr. Toalson, Mr, Behrens conducts the band, orchestra, and small instrumental ensembles, Most of the acting talent comes from the speech department which in wider the brilliant leadership of Mrs, Williams. The Verse Choir, chosen from speech classes, is well known throughout the state. A few of the important programs during the year are the Operetta,Talent Night, and the Christmas Pageant, which consume the efforts of the three fine art departments.
