The industrious commerce department at Hickman is fortunate in having four teachers and five courses in the field of practical arts. Of these five courses, shorthand and typing are usually taken first. These two courses are followed by secretarial practice, which is a course designed to better prepare the student for the world of business. Bookkeeping is also a course which is a useful aid in preparing for office work, The class helps the student not only in working with numbers but also in helping him to es- tablish a pattern of neatness. RALL Biology, Botany, Zoology The science department at Hickman offers- five interesting courses. Biology, Botany, and Zoology are basic courses in the study of all living things, Chemistry and Physics give the student a good back- ground in physical science. Hickman boasts a well -equipped laboratory which supple- ments textbook teaching and greatly adds to the interest of the courses. This year for the first time, television is being used as a teaching aid in one of the Physics classes. This is part of an experiment in educational television, under the direction of the University of Missouri. In the picture at the left, Bill Cornelison is absorbed in dissecting his starfish, but Chris Wonneman looks rather suspiciously at hers. fgitgdicaf gycfvwafionf Cfoww For the first time in the history of Hickman High School, Kewpie students have the opportunity of taking physical education five days a week, This was made possible by the addition of a new gymnasium, including a much larger shower, locker rooms for both girls and boys and new physical education offices. The new gym has made it possible for two classes to be carried on at one time. This is done by an electrically operated partition which divides the gym into two equal sections. In the photo at right, one of the girls' gym classes demonstrates their skill in learn- ing basketball. 5 156 QM!
